On 26 April 1986, as an explosion rocked the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, life in the nearby city of Pripyat appeared — at least on the surface — to continue as normal.

Among those moving ahead with their plans were Iryna Stetsenko, 19, and Serhiy Lobanov, 25, who were due to be married that same day, just 4km from the plant.

    The wedding morning

In the early hours before the ceremony, residents reported unusual sounds and vibrations. Iryna recalled a low rumble and shaking windows, while Serhiy described feeling what he thought might have been a minor tremor.

Despite this, there was no clear information.

According to BBC News, Soviet authorities did not immediately disclose what had happened. Radio broadcasts remained silent, and when residents called for answers, they were told not to panic and to continue with planned events.

By morning, however, signs of disruption were visible. Soldiers in gas masks appeared the city, and streets were being washed down. At the market, unusually quiet for a Saturday, Serhiy bought a small bouquet of tulips for the bride.

    “We knew something wasn’t right”

The wedding went ahead at Pripyat’s Palace of Culture, The couple exchanged vows in front of family and friends, but the mood was far from celebratory. Guests were aware that something had happened, even if the details were unclear.

“There was tension,” Serhiy later said to BBC. “Everyone understood something was wrong.”

At the reception, the atmosphere remained subdued. The couple had planned a traditional waltz for their first dance, but quickly fell out of step. Instead, they held each other and moved together quietly.

What was happening just kilometres away

While the wedding continued, reactor four at the plant had exploded during a failed safety test, triggering the Chernobyl disaster.

The blast released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, affecting vast areas of Ukraine and beyond. Emergency crews worked through the night to contain the damage, many exposed to dangerous radiation levels.

Residents, however, were not immediately evacuated or fully informed.

    A wedding cut short

In the early hours of the following morning, just hours after becoming husband and wife, Iryna and Serhiy were told to leave.

Evacuation trains were scheduled to depart at dawn. With little time to prepare, they gathered what they could. Iryna, who had no other suitable clothing on hand, ran through the streets in her wedding dress to return home and change before leaving.

Like thousands of others, they were told the evacuation would be temporary.

    They never returned to Pripyat.

    Life after Chernobyl

In the days following their evacuation, the couple stayed with family far from the exclusion zone. It was there that Iryna discovered she was pregnant.

At the time, there were widespread concerns about the potential effects of radiation exposure on unborn children. Despite the uncertainty, she continued with the pregnancy and later gave birth to a healthy daughter.

Over the years, the couple have said they believe the disaster may have affected their health, though this has not been medically confirmed.

    Decades later

Today, Pripyat remains abandoned, and the reactor is sealed beneath a protective structure designed to contain radiation. While some areas are now considered safe for limited visits, the region is still heavily monitored.

For Iryna and Serhiy, the events of that day reshaped the course of their lives.

Their wedding, set against the backdrop of one of history’s most devastating nuclear accidents, was not the celebration they had imagined — but it marked the beginning of a marriage that has endured decades of upheaval.

Once upon a time, saying “I do” in your early twenties felt like a given. Today? Not so much. South Africans are rewriting the rules of romance, choosing to marry later, more intentionally, and often with a clearer sense of self.

New data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) highlights a clear shift in South Africa’s relationship landscape: fewer people are getting married, while divorce rates are increasing, with women continuing to file for the majority of cases.

But beyond the numbers, the data also points to something more meaningful: couples are approaching marriage with greater intention, and individuals are making more informed decisions about long-term commitment.

    Marriages continue to decline

In 2024, South Africa recorded 102 373 marriages and unions, down 2.6% from 2023. Since 2015, marriages have decreased by 28.5%.

Civil marriages followed the same pattern, declining to 97 510 in 2024. This steady drop suggests that many couples are choosing to marry later, taking more time before formalising their relationships.

    Divorce numbers are rising

A total of 24 202 divorces were granted in 2024 — an 8.9% increase from the previous year.

Women filed for 57.2% of these divorces, continuing a consistent trend. This reflects greater access to legal processes, as well as increased financial independence and decision-making power.

    Provincial breakdown

Divorce cases initiated by women were highest in Gauteng (31.0%), followed by the Western Cape (18.6%) and KwaZulu-Natal (13.8%).

    Who is filing for divorce?

Most women filing for divorce in 2024 were ending their first marriage (89.1%). The highest number of divorces occurred among women aged 40 to 44, followed by those aged 35 to 39.

In most cases (70.7%), women were younger than their spouses.

    Employment and independence

Of the women who filed for divorce, 44.6% were employed, many in professional, technical, managerial, and administrative roles. Financial stability gives individuals more control over major life decisions, including whether to stay in a marriage.

    When marriages end

The largest share of divorces (26.7%) occurred in marriages lasting five to nine years, followed by 10 to 14 years (21.3%). Overall, 41.7% of divorces involved marriages that lasted less than a decade.

    A shift towards intentional commitment

While the number of marriages is declining, the data suggests a move towards more considered, intentional unions. Many couples are choosing to marry later, after establishing careers and gaining life experience.

We all need a knight in shining armour, especially when you’re a bride rushing to make it to her wedding ceremony.

Marksteen Adamson is a driver from the United Kingdom. On his way to a reunion, Marksteen said he noticed the bride on the side of the road in London asking for a lift.

The apparently looked “distressed” as countless cars passed her by.

According to the anxious bride, three rideshares had already cancelled on her and her bridal party, which included her sister and one other bridesmaid who could be seen carrying her veil.

“I’m late for church,” the bride can be heard saying in the video.

Despite being a whole 45 minutes late to her own wedding, Adamson delivers the bride and her bridal party safely to the church, where she is met by the vicar to who she recounts the tale to.

An adorable rom-com or an absolute nightmare? Luckily this story has a happy ending!

    Watch the video below:

@marksteenadamsonWas driving through london traffic to visit friends for a reunion lunch in South East London when I stopped at a padestrian crossing and saw a bride looking confused and flustered. I started filming as I thought it would be a great shot seeing her cross the road in her full attire. Then she saw me and started walking towards me and gesturing. It turns out that she and her brides maid and team had been trying to order Uber cabs but three cabs had canceled at the last minute and she was 45min late for church. Everyone, most importantly her husbsnd to be, were wating at Holy Trinity Bromton for her to artive. She asked if I could give her and the group a lift, and so they jumped in to my landrover and I drove her to church. In our short time together we had lots of quick short conversations about everthing and got to know eachother a little better and new friendships were made. After I dropped her off I heard the sound of the organ ring out and knew everything was going to be alright. It was a beautiful sunny day.♬ Going To The Chapel – The Paragons

Food has always had a way of lifting spirits and bringing people together, especially one of Italy’s most popular exports – pizza.

Pizza is such an integral part of one bride’s daily life, that she’s even entered into a quirky little contract with her groom. The newlyweds have gone viral for sharing a few snapshots of their “wedding contract” which includes only “one pizza a month”.

Now, one pizza a month might sound like an odd inclusion for a wedding contract, but there’s a very good reason for this.

According to BBC News, the blushing bride is obsessed with consuming the Italian delicacy! Shanti Prasad and Mintu Rai are the newlyweds in question and have decided to tie the knot in their hometown of Guwahati, India.

The inclusion is also a cute little nod to the couple’s first date as Prasad apparently insisted she wanted pizza.

The friends were the masterminds behind the contract, setting the terms and conditions which were sprung on the couple on their big day.

Other conditions in the contract include only shopping twice a month, taking good pictures at every party and going to the gym every day.

Most brides wouldn’t mind spending a few R10 000 or more on a gorgeous new wedding dress, but for some cash-strapped brides, that’s simply not an option.

Heading to your local thrifting store is a great way to unearth some fashionable gems, including a gorgeous wedding dress as one young bride found out.

The blushing bride took to TikTok to share her experience of purchasing her wedding dress at a thrift shop as she was determined to keep spending to a minimum.

As prices continue to soar throughout various industries, many young couples are attempting to keep things more affordable. Thrifting and smaller, more intimate settings are just a few ways bridal couples are attempting to cut costs.

Jullian Lynch, who hails from Ohia in the United States, explained that she initially spent around R60 ($3.75) on the dress, but forked out a few more bucks for alternations, costing an extra R1700 ($110).

That’s still not a bad price tag for such a gorgeous dress, a thought many TikTok users had as they gawked at her budget-friendly wedding experience.

According to Lynch, the dress was brand new as it still had its tags and social media users couldn’t seem to get enough:

“Still $115 compared to $5,000,” one user stated. “Such an amazing dress and shoes. Very classy look.”

    “Gorgeous,” another user noted.

When the cravings hit, there’s nothing you can do as one bridal couple recently found out. After all, walking down the aisle and saying “I do” can certainly work up an apetitie.

Newlyweds Basman Alwakeel (28) and blushing bride Haneen Alkhthir (31) tied the knot in a traditional wedding ceremony before sneaking away to satisfy their fast food cravings – a tasty meal at McDonalds – before heading back to an incredible evening with family and friends.

The couple, who hail from Australia, spent a few hours snapping wedding pics at the University of Sydney.

“It is such a beautiful location, but we were so hungry and craved some food, so we did a quick search of the nearest McDonald’s,” said Basman.

So what was on the menu for Mr and Mrs?

“We both ordered a spicy McChicken with chips and coke. The staff were shocked and the people kept congratulating us.”

Thankfully, the talented photographer was there to capture the “beautiful and natural moment.”

Despite the impromptu affair, that meal sure does look delicious! Even more fantastic is the fact that the gorgeous bride managed to keep her all-white wedding attire free of ketchup – no easy feat!

But while the couple tucked into a spicy chicken burger, just what about the guests? Friends and family did not go hungry as tradition dictates otherwise.

“It’s tradition for us to have guests in both the bride and groom’s house before the service. Simple snacks are prepared for the guests and later at the reception we chose Mediterranean food,” Basman said.

The one cardinal rule for every and all weddings is this: do not upstage the bride.

    Also, never wear white.

Unfortunately, one woman managed to break both of these rules.

A mother of the groom attempted to ensure all eyes were on her by donning a replica dress of the bride’s wedding gown – yikes!

The bride shared her experience on Reddit’s wedding shame community, sharing a series of snaps from her “big day.” In the photo, the bride, mother-in-law, and now, ex-husband, can be seen posing for the cringe-worthy photo.

“MIL really wanted to be bride. I’m now divorced from her son, who she posed with in the 2nd picture,” wrote jerseygirl1105.

It’s a tough pill to swallow but the dresses look eerily similar.

So, just what did the guests at the wedding think?

“It was humiliating for her because the reaction was not what she expected, which was to feel like the bride. Instead, she looked like an absolute fool.”

While the image stirs up some level of fury and embarrassment, the comments regarding the post were hilarious.

“I thought they were sister wives,” said one comment.

“You know the engagement photos where the bride-to-be poses with left hand on chest, engagement ring showing? It looks like she’s doing that in the mother/son photo,” noted another.

All’s well that ends well! The Redditor explained that despite the kerfuffle that took place on her wedding day, the ending of her marriage was not so disastrous.

“We remain good friends because he’s a great guy who was embarrassed by his mother.”

Your big day is filled with many things. Saying “I do” to the person you’ll spend the rest of your life with, delicious food, endless dancing, and to ensure that the day stays in your memories forever – the wedding photos.

While no one ever forgets when they walk down the aisle, one bride and groom will definitely not, and they have the photos to prove it!

The bridal couple – named Murat Zhurayev and Kamilla – had been posing for pictures when the groom decided he wanted to go the extra mile and strike a ‘dramatic and artsy’ pose. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan as the groom slipped and both of them ended up lying in a muddy slime caused by a flash rainstorm in Almaty.

    Picture: Askar Bumaga

Photographer Askar Bumaga was there to capture the entire moment, which has since garnered more than 41 000 likes on Instagram. The images show the bridal couple landing in the mud, turning Kamilla’s from a traditional white to a muddy brown. A pained expression can be seen sprawled across her face, but this soon gives way to laughter.

Looking on the bright side of things, at least the couple has some memorable photos!

    Picture: Askar Bumaga

So, just why were they in the mud anyway?

“My main specialisation is the photography of lovers and weddings. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years.

“I planned this photo shoot as an experiment. Unfortunately, or fortunately, such failures, the mistakes of others and random situations attract more attention than standard photo sessions against the background of a beautiful sunset,” said photographer Bumaga.

“The photo shoot itself took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan. No one was injured during the filming of this project.”

Thankfully, all’s well that ends well!
