If there’s one city that knows how to set the scene for romance, it’s Cape Town.

From mountain peaks and botanical gardens to pristine beaches and iconic landmarks, the Mother City offers no shortage of breathtaking backdrops for one of life’s biggest questions. According to a survey conducted by Cape Town Tourism across social media platforms, alongside insights from proposal planners, some locations consistently stood out as favourites among locals.

The overwhelming winner? The V&A Waterfront, followed closely by Table Mountain.

It’s not difficult to see why. Cape Town’s combination of dramatic scenery, ocean views and world-class experiences has earned it a reputation as one of the most romantic destinations on the continent.

Other much-loved proposal locations mentioned by Capetonians included Hout Bay, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Signal Hill, Franschhoek, Boulders Beach, Aquila Private Game Reserve and Strand.

To prove that there’s no single formula for the perfect proposal, here are a few real-life stories from couples who found their special moment in some of Cape Town’s most romantic settings.

Here are sweet proposal stories from some of the city’s most special spots to bend the knee:

Kirstenbosch: When bigger really is better

Some proposals are intimate affairs shared between two people. Others involve months of planning, hundreds of witnesses and a surprise that no one sees coming.

One local shared how he proposed after a screening of The Notebook at an outdoor cinema event in Kirstenbosch. Unknown to his partner, he had arranged for a personal video documenting their six-year relationship to play after the movie.

As the video ended, he led her to the front of the audience and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. When she said yes, family and friends emerged from the crowd to celebrate the moment.

    V&A Waterfront

For Masego and Letlotlo, a holiday in Cape Town became the beginning of a new chapter.

Wanting something different from a traditional proposal, Masego worked with planners to arrange a private art experience at the V&A Waterfront. Hidden within an interactive artwork was a message waiting to be revealed.

As Letlotlo peeled back the layers of the canvas, the words “Marry Me” appeared. Her answer was an enthusiastic yes.

Signal Hill: Proof that perfection is overrated

Not every proposal unfolds exactly as planned.

Janine Naicker recalls how windy conditions and a lack of parking nearly derailed her partner’s carefully thought-out moment at Signal Hill. After several unsuccessful attempts to get her out of the car to admire the view, he resorted to Plan B.

He handed her a box of cupcakes and asked her to pass him one. Inside the box, nestled in the icing, was an engagement ring.

Sometimes the best proposals are the ones that embrace the unexpected.

Table Mountain: A proposal above the clouds

For many couples, Table Mountain remains the ultimate proposal destination.

One local shared how her partner planned a sunrise hike to the very spot where they had enjoyed one of their first dates together. As the sun rose over the city, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

Years later, it remains one of her favourite memories.

    Strand Beach: Coming full circle

For Bianca Engelbrecht, the proposal happened exactly where their story began.

The couple’s first date took place on Strand Beach, where they spent hours talking while listening to the waves. Years later, under the impression they were simply meeting friends, Bianca was surprised when her partner suggested a quick detour.

Back at the beach where they first connected, he asked her to marry him.

Sidebar: ‘Secret’ spots to pop the big Q:

Here’s a list of some of Cape Town’s lesser-known locations that are perfect for proposals:

    • Majik Forest (Door de Kraal, Cape Town): Secreted in the northern suburbs, with soft green grass, trees, ducks, a dam and a mountain bike trail in the forest section, this pet-friendly park is the perfect place to propose to your significant other with your furry friend present.
    • Lichtenstein Castle (Hout Bay): The privately owned castle, located in Hout Bay, can be visited by appointment only. It’s the perfect place to propose in a fairy-tale setting.
    • Woodstock streets: Urban adventurers will find a perfect proposal setting amidst the gorgeous, gritty surrounds of Woodstock’s world-famous street art.
    • Tintswalo Atlantic (Hout Bay): Rumour has it a penguin gives its mate a pebble when courting. Pop your person a pebble on Tintswalo’s secluded stretch of beach, below Chapman’s Peak Drive.
    • Dias Beach (Cape Point): Wild and whimsical, this hidden coast offers unparalleled sea views. It’s the ideal backdrop for ‘I do’.
    • Secret Rock (Bantry Bay): Perched at the top of Nettleton Drive is a secret rock where many a couple has come for some special moments alone…

    The perfect proposal is personal

While Cape Town offers countless spectacular locations to pop the question, the most memorable proposals often have little to do with the setting itself. Whether it’s a mountaintop sunrise, a beach at sunset or a meaningful place that tells your story as a couple, the most romantic proposal spot is the one that feels authentic to you.

That said, if you’re looking for inspiration, locals have spoken –  and Cape Town’s iconic landscapes provide some of the most unforgettable places in the world to say “yes”.

Pop superstar Dua Lipa is officially married.

The Grammy-winning singer reportedly tied the knot with British actor Callum Turner in an intimate ceremony held at London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall on Sunday, 31 May 2026, surrounded by close family and friends. The surprise wedding comes after months of speculation surrounding the couple’s engagement and wedding plans.

According to reports, the pair opted for a low-key civil ceremony in one of London’s most iconic wedding venues. Photos shared by international media show the newlyweds leaving the venue hand-in-hand while guests showered them with confetti and flower petals.

For the occasion, Dua Lipa reportedly wore a custom white Schiaparelli ensemble paired with a dramatic wide-brimmed hat and classic white heels, while Turner chose a timeless navy suit. The fashion-forward look was fitting for a bride who has become one of the most influential style icons of her generation.

The couple first sparked dating rumours in early 2024 before making their relationship public later that year. Engagement speculation intensified after Dua Lipa was spotted wearing a diamond ring, which she later confirmed during an interview with British Vogue in 2025.

Speaking about her engagement at the time, the singer described the prospect of growing old together and being “best friends forever” as a “really special feeling”.

Their romance reportedly began after meeting through mutual connections in London, with the pair later reconnecting in Los Angeles. Since then, they have become one of entertainment’s most talked-about couples, frequently appearing together at high-profile events and on social media.

While the London ceremony was intimate, several international reports suggest that this may be just the beginning of the celebrations. A larger multi-day wedding event is reportedly planned in Sicily, Italy, where an impressive guest list of celebrities and close friends is expected to attend. Neither Lipa nor Turner has publicly confirmed the details.

Fans across the globe have already flooded social media with messages of congratulations, celebrating the couple’s next chapter together.

Mr and Mrs seem like given titles for those that choose to walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’. Have you ever wondered where these titles come from? The origin might surprise you.

The titles originally had nothing to do with marital status. Cambridge University historian Dr. Amy Erickson explains that ‘Mrs’ and ‘Miss’ derived from the word ‘mistress’ while  ‘Mr’ comes from ‘master’.

“Few people realise that ‘Mistress’ is the root word of both of the abbreviations ‘Mrs,’ and ‘Miss,’ just as Mr is an abbreviation of ‘Master.’ The ways that words derived from Mistress have developed their own meanings is quite fascinating and shifts in these meanings can tell us a lot about the changing status of women in society, at home and in the workplace,” she said

According to author Samuel Johnson, a mistress could be defined as “1. A woman who governs; correlative to subject or servant; 2. A woman skilled in anything; 3. A woman teacher; 4. A woman beloved and courted; 5. A term of contemptuous address; 6. A whore or concubine.”

Back in the mid-18th century, ‘mistress’ didn’t have quite the negative connotations it has today. In those days, a mistress typically referred to a woman of high economic or social capital, rather than a married woman. A woman referred to as Mrs in the 18th century was thus not necessarily married.

Those on the lower scales of society were simply referred to by their names. For example, the lady of the house might have been Mrs Abernathy, while the scullery maid would simply be Anna Black.

Mr and Mrs were on equal standing, and Erickson argues those that held these titles were more like businessmen and women as they governed servants or apprentices, and were quite literally the masters and mistresses of their trades.

It was only in the late 18th century that the use of Mrs became attached to marital status. The title Miss, which was originally a title for young girls, started to be used as a term to refer to an unmarried woman of a high social status, who was often a teacher. These young, socially ambitious single women wanted their own title that would mark their social class but not lump them into a group with the older businesswomen and heads of households that typically held the title of Mrs.

This new term thus shifted the meaning of Mrs to signify a married woman and create a distinction between young and older.

Why the pronunciation of mistress turned to ‘missus’ is unclear. In A Critical Pronouncing Dictionary, and Expositor of the English Language from 1828, author John Walker suggests its a result of colloquialism.

“The same haste and necessity of dispatch, which has corrupted Master into Mister, has, when a title of civility only, contracted Mistress into Missis,” he wrote.

On 26 April 1986, as an explosion rocked the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, life in the nearby city of Pripyat appeared — at least on the surface — to continue as normal.

Among those moving ahead with their plans were Iryna Stetsenko, 19, and Serhiy Lobanov, 25, who were due to be married that same day, just 4km from the plant.

    The wedding morning

In the early hours before the ceremony, residents reported unusual sounds and vibrations. Iryna recalled a low rumble and shaking windows, while Serhiy described feeling what he thought might have been a minor tremor.

Despite this, there was no clear information.

According to BBC News, Soviet authorities did not immediately disclose what had happened. Radio broadcasts remained silent, and when residents called for answers, they were told not to panic and to continue with planned events.

By morning, however, signs of disruption were visible. Soldiers in gas masks appeared the city, and streets were being washed down. At the market, unusually quiet for a Saturday, Serhiy bought a small bouquet of tulips for the bride.

    “We knew something wasn’t right”

The wedding went ahead at Pripyat’s Palace of Culture, The couple exchanged vows in front of family and friends, but the mood was far from celebratory. Guests were aware that something had happened, even if the details were unclear.

“There was tension,” Serhiy later said to BBC. “Everyone understood something was wrong.”

At the reception, the atmosphere remained subdued. The couple had planned a traditional waltz for their first dance, but quickly fell out of step. Instead, they held each other and moved together quietly.

What was happening just kilometres away

While the wedding continued, reactor four at the plant had exploded during a failed safety test, triggering the Chernobyl disaster.

The blast released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, affecting vast areas of Ukraine and beyond. Emergency crews worked through the night to contain the damage, many exposed to dangerous radiation levels.

Residents, however, were not immediately evacuated or fully informed.

    A wedding cut short

In the early hours of the following morning, just hours after becoming husband and wife, Iryna and Serhiy were told to leave.

Evacuation trains were scheduled to depart at dawn. With little time to prepare, they gathered what they could. Iryna, who had no other suitable clothing on hand, ran through the streets in her wedding dress to return home and change before leaving.

Like thousands of others, they were told the evacuation would be temporary.

    They never returned to Pripyat.

    Life after Chernobyl

In the days following their evacuation, the couple stayed with family far from the exclusion zone. It was there that Iryna discovered she was pregnant.

At the time, there were widespread concerns about the potential effects of radiation exposure on unborn children. Despite the uncertainty, she continued with the pregnancy and later gave birth to a healthy daughter.

Over the years, the couple have said they believe the disaster may have affected their health, though this has not been medically confirmed.

    Decades later

Today, Pripyat remains abandoned, and the reactor is sealed beneath a protective structure designed to contain radiation. While some areas are now considered safe for limited visits, the region is still heavily monitored.

For Iryna and Serhiy, the events of that day reshaped the course of their lives.

Their wedding, set against the backdrop of one of history’s most devastating nuclear accidents, was not the celebration they had imagined — but it marked the beginning of a marriage that has endured decades of upheaval.

Once upon a time, saying “I do” in your early twenties felt like a given. Today? Not so much. South Africans are rewriting the rules of romance, choosing to marry later, more intentionally, and often with a clearer sense of self.

New data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) highlights a clear shift in South Africa’s relationship landscape: fewer people are getting married, while divorce rates are increasing, with women continuing to file for the majority of cases.

But beyond the numbers, the data also points to something more meaningful: couples are approaching marriage with greater intention, and individuals are making more informed decisions about long-term commitment.

    Marriages continue to decline

In 2024, South Africa recorded 102 373 marriages and unions, down 2.6% from 2023. Since 2015, marriages have decreased by 28.5%.

Civil marriages followed the same pattern, declining to 97 510 in 2024. This steady drop suggests that many couples are choosing to marry later, taking more time before formalising their relationships.

    Divorce numbers are rising

A total of 24 202 divorces were granted in 2024 — an 8.9% increase from the previous year.

Women filed for 57.2% of these divorces, continuing a consistent trend. This reflects greater access to legal processes, as well as increased financial independence and decision-making power.

    Provincial breakdown

Divorce cases initiated by women were highest in Gauteng (31.0%), followed by the Western Cape (18.6%) and KwaZulu-Natal (13.8%).

    Who is filing for divorce?

Most women filing for divorce in 2024 were ending their first marriage (89.1%). The highest number of divorces occurred among women aged 40 to 44, followed by those aged 35 to 39.

In most cases (70.7%), women were younger than their spouses.

    Employment and independence

Of the women who filed for divorce, 44.6% were employed, many in professional, technical, managerial, and administrative roles. Financial stability gives individuals more control over major life decisions, including whether to stay in a marriage.

    When marriages end

The largest share of divorces (26.7%) occurred in marriages lasting five to nine years, followed by 10 to 14 years (21.3%). Overall, 41.7% of divorces involved marriages that lasted less than a decade.

    A shift towards intentional commitment

While the number of marriages is declining, the data suggests a move towards more considered, intentional unions. Many couples are choosing to marry later, after establishing careers and gaining life experience.

We all need a knight in shining armour, especially when you’re a bride rushing to make it to her wedding ceremony.

Marksteen Adamson is a driver from the United Kingdom. On his way to a reunion, Marksteen said he noticed the bride on the side of the road in London asking for a lift.

The apparently looked “distressed” as countless cars passed her by.

According to the anxious bride, three rideshares had already cancelled on her and her bridal party, which included her sister and one other bridesmaid who could be seen carrying her veil.

“I’m late for church,” the bride can be heard saying in the video.

Despite being a whole 45 minutes late to her own wedding, Adamson delivers the bride and her bridal party safely to the church, where she is met by the vicar to who she recounts the tale to.

An adorable rom-com or an absolute nightmare? Luckily this story has a happy ending!

    Watch the video below:

@marksteenadamsonWas driving through london traffic to visit friends for a reunion lunch in South East London when I stopped at a padestrian crossing and saw a bride looking confused and flustered. I started filming as I thought it would be a great shot seeing her cross the road in her full attire. Then she saw me and started walking towards me and gesturing. It turns out that she and her brides maid and team had been trying to order Uber cabs but three cabs had canceled at the last minute and she was 45min late for church. Everyone, most importantly her husbsnd to be, were wating at Holy Trinity Bromton for her to artive. She asked if I could give her and the group a lift, and so they jumped in to my landrover and I drove her to church. In our short time together we had lots of quick short conversations about everthing and got to know eachother a little better and new friendships were made. After I dropped her off I heard the sound of the organ ring out and knew everything was going to be alright. It was a beautiful sunny day.♬ Going To The Chapel – The Paragons
