Paris may be the city of love, but Italy has stolen our hearts. With endless seas, beautiful architecture and oodles of pasta, this romantic destination is the perfect place to cuddle up with your lover.

If you are planning an international honeymoon, you cannot go wrong with this European country. Here are some of the must-see Italian cities for newlyweds.

    Venice:

A city of immense beauty and history, Venice isn’t like the rest of Italy. Venice is actually made up of more than 100 small islands on the Adriatic Sea, connected by a series of canals. There is no end to romantic activities in this quant city.

While there are a number of popular tourist destinations, the true beauty comes in wandering through the smaller parts. Take a romantic gondola ride through the meandering canals while cuddling up with your partner. Visit the picturesque Burano island, known for its colourful houses and lace weavers. In the evening, stop off at one of Venice’s oldest wine bars, Cantina Do Spade. It is rumoured that Casanova himself brought many women here to wine and dine.

    Sardinia:

There is something for everyone in the Italian city. Nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia is decorated with rising mountains and 360 degree ocean views. Active couples can get their sweat on exploring Gennargentu’s vast mountain range, and partake in the wide array of water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving throughout the island.

Wine-lovers will be in heaven in Olbia, home of the vineyards, where visitors can travel between wine farms to taste new and unique wines. For a more luxurious experience, visit Porto Cervo. Created by Prince Karim Aga Khan, the area is well known for its yachts, designer stores and bustling nightlife.

    Florence:

As the birthplace of the Renaissance, this beautiful city is rich in culture. Art lovers will be in their element at the Uffuzi Gallery, home to artwork by famous Italian creators such as Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.

Beyond these works of art, Florence itself seems to be straight out of a painting. Beautiful architecture lines Florence’s streets, from the main cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore to the Basilica of Santa Croce.

For a daytime activity, we suggest wandering around the Villa Bardini Garden, a serene and picturesque garden with old-world charm. Make sure to visit the stairs of Piazzale Michelangelo for an unforgettably romantic view of Florence at sunset, or end the day off with a romantic stroll on the river Arno. Wherever you are, Florence promises love under the Tuscan sun.

With boundless natural beauty and a stretching coastline, the Amalfi coast is one of the top Italian destinations, especially for couples. The best plan of action is to rent a boat for the day, as many of of the smaller coves and beaches are only accessible this way.

The quiet town of Ravello features two stunning villas to explore, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. A must see is Villa Cimbrone’s Terrace of Infinity, which offers one of the most stunning views from the Amalfi Coast.

Positano is home to one of the most celebrated hiking paths in the world, the Path of Gods, as well as stunning architecture. Take in this seaside town’s old world charm with a walk through its cobblestoned roads.

Sicily’s romantic landscape, marvellous ruins and stunning coastline make it an incredible choice for an international honeymoon. With both Greek and Roman heritage, this island is a cultural haven boasting beautiful views all around.

The capital, Palermo, is great for culture-seeking couples. Marvel at the Royal Palace of Palermo, Europe’s oldest royal residence, and visit the Palatine Chapel for stunning mosaics and Byzantine architecture.

Cefalù is popular for their Roman baths and the ancient cathedral, home to the world-famous fresco of Christ, the Christus Pantokrator. When in Cefalù, make sure to visit the Lungomare Giuseppe Giardina, a long beach that curves below the old town.

We all know how expensive weddings and honeymoons can be. As amazing as your big day might have been, your bank account will probably not love you for it. There’s no pressure to go away and have an expensive honeymoon. Whatever decision is right for your budget, will be the right one for your future, no matter what others say. You can always have that grand trip later.

In the meantime, there’s no reason you can’t still celebrate your new life together right where you are in a budget-friendly way. Take a day or a weekend off to spend some time together. Here are some great ideas. Choose your fave or combine them all!

    Feast on love

Picnics are super fun and a great way to get creative, since you can plan exactly what you want to pack. Grab a comfy blanket and set it up anywhere you like. A pretty park, botanical garden, a riverside and the beach are all great options. It might be nice to choose a theme, for example Greek food. Alternatively, just pack your favourite snacks and drinks!

    Spa day

After all that wedding stress, you both deserve some relaxation. Spa’s are excellent for some spoiling and usually have couple’s activities you can do together. Camp in the backyard

Now, we know what you think: This is just for kids. No, it absolutely is not! Depending on your backyard, you can have a whole weekend getaway all outdoors. Pitch that tent, roll out the sleeping bags and roast marshmallows around the campfire. If you don’t have a backyard, there’s bound to be some camping spots near you, and they’re usually quite affordable.

    Candle-lit dinner and stargazing

Ah, the magic of candles. For some reason, candle-lit dinners just never go out of style. For this one, you could either go to a cosy restaurant or consider cooking together and setting up a nice dinner table at home. After dinner, spread a blanket and gaze at the stars if the night is clear. Cuddle up close and dream about your future together.

Former SA cricket captain Graeme Smith got married on Saturday to lawyer Romy Lanfranchi, the same day the Springboks beat England in the Rugby World Cup final.  Early on Saturday, though, Graeme apparently made it clear that the Bokke formed a big part of the couple’s excitement on their magic big day.

According to YOU, the couple had a little boy together in 2016 and got engaged in 2018. They each have two children from previous marriages as well.

The two got hitched at the luxurious Beloftebos Wedding Venue outside of Cape Town. Both looked glorious, with Romy wearing a strapless mermaid dress and Graeme a black suit and faded pink tie. In all their pictures, the family of 7 are smiling and laughing lovingly.

After all the stress that comes with planning a wedding, it’s no doubt that you’ll welcome your honeymoon with open arms. Just you and your partner against a backdrop of romance, quality time and breathtaking scenery in foreign places. To make things easy and to ensure that you minimise any unnecessary stress from here on out, we’ve listed some useful tips to help you pack the perfect honeymoon suitcase.

    Create a packing list:

To maximise on space and save time when selecting outfits, you want to consider a few things when creating a packing list. These factors will ensure that you don’t end up taking unnecessary items that you won’t end up using. Consider the:

    • Destination
    • Weather
    • Itinerary
    • Comfortability
    • Practicality

    What to pack:

After carefully taking into considering what the climate will be like at your honeymoon destination and everything you have set out on your itinerary, don’t forget about these basics:

    • Versatile clothing items. These are items that can be worn to any occasion and are comfortable, practical and stylish, like a comfortable pair of pants that can be dressed up or down.
    • Try and stick to packing in wrinkle-resistant microfibers and fabrics that don’t require extra care.
    • Pack in travel-sized essentials like shampoo, toothpaste and skincare, but also share products with your S.O. where possible.
    • All important documents should be kept separate from your check-in luggage, so that you don’t end up looking for them at customs.

    How to pack:

Minimising your luggage weight can prove to be a huge benefit. Not only will you be able to move around more freely with less luggage, but you can accommodate space for those souvenirs you couldn’t resist buying.

    • Layer the bottom of the suitcase with your shoes.
    • On top of the shoes, pack in all folded items. Rolling outfits into tight rolls can create a ton of extra space because you can insert clothing into every nook and cranny in your suitcase.
    • For clothing that wrinkles easily, it may be best to fold instead of roll, and then place on top of everything else.
    • Once all your smaller items have been packed, you can now pack the bulkier clothing right on top.
    • Another option would be to purchase suitcase dividers – this may take up a bit more space but will ensure that your suitcase is more organised, making things easier to find.

    What to avoid:

    • Refrain from packing in items you’ve never worn before – chances are they’ll never leave the suitcase either.
    • Don’t pack in multiple items of the same kind. One pair of comfortable sneakers is enough!
    • Don’t overthink your clothing choices – you’ll end up with your entire closet in your suitcase.

The days leading up to your wedding can be super stressful and the day itself quite emotional. Don’t let the best day of your life be spoiled by feelings of anxiety or exhaustion. Here are some helpful tips on how to keep the joyful experience this special day is meant to be.

    – The week before, take a few minutes each day and write down things you are grateful for. Journaling can be very therapeutic and serve as a reminder of how blessed you are for the people around you. Whether it be the one you’re marrying, the friends and family that support you or this exciting new adventure that lies ahead, jot it down and reflect on it.

    – There’s a saying that goes: “Don’t sweat the petty stuff and don’t pet the sweaty stuff.” That’s about as perfect a saying you can get for a wedding. Remember the reason you are getting married: You have found the person you love with all your heart and you want to share it with people that are close to you. So when those little emergencies come, and they will, take a deep breath, smile and let the bridesmaids handle it.

    – Get enough sleep the week before. Make sure you sleep well. Essential oils like lavender and jasmine might help you drift off to dreamland with a smile on your face. You will be quite busy those last few days, but you will want to feel rested and energetic at the wedding.

    – Water is life. Taking a long, tranquil bath or shower the morning of your wedding will let the world’s worries flow away. Light some scented candles and make it your me-time where no one may bother you. Relax and focus on your breathing while soaking in the bubbles.

    – It might sound like a good time to get hammered at the party but in truth, you will regret getting crazy drunk on your wedding and especially being hungover on your honeymoon. Having a good time at this joyous celebration is important, but overdoing it might lead you to make a mess of things. You want to remember your special day with grace for the rest of your life.

Just like the wedding and everything that surrounds it, your honeymoon will be yet another expensive weight on your shoulders. However, with some careful planning, lots of research and a bit of consideration, it is possible to save some money. Here’s how:

    1. Include it in your registry

Instead of opting for the traditional registry, ask guests for a contribution towards your honeymoon in general, or specific excursions, tickets or bookings. It’s no longer frowned upon to ask for a donation instead of a gift, as more and more couples already have everything they need for their home before even getting married.

    2. Who needs souvenirs?

Instead of spending unnecessary money on souvenirs (which, let’s face it, you’ll never look at again), rather spend it on experiences – such as special dinners, excursions or tours. These experiences are much more valuable than physical things. However, if you love doing outdoorsy stuff, such as hiking, it might even cost you less!

    3. Use public transport instead of Ubers

Do some research and gather information on how the public transport system works in the areas you’ll be in. Ubers and taxis are often much more expensive than the public systems, so this way you’ll be able to save quite a bit. Your hotel or accommodation staff will also be able to assist you with recommendations and guides.

    4. Be clever with your travel dates

You don’t need to leave for your honeymoon the moment you get married. Because most couples still need to take personal matters, such as work, into consideration before being able to leave, you can plan your honeymoon around ‘cheaper’ seasons, flights and destinations. Consider off-season options, as this will not only be cheaper all round, but also less crowded.

    5. Score some points

On your credit card, that is. Lots of credit card services offer rewards that you can use for travel, including discounts on flights, accommodation, restaurants etc. Although you’d have to start planning this one quite a bit in advance, it will definitely be worth it.

    6. DIY

Instead of booking everything through a travel agency, do your research, plan carefully, and book everything yourself to avoid paying any additional fees. Also make sure to check the direct websites of hotels, lodges or resorts, as they often have slightly lower rates than when it’s booked elsewhere. If you do, however, prefer to use an agent, make sure they book package deals for you, so that you can get the most bang for your buck.

    7. Take a chance

It might be a little forward, but when booking a room, a restaurant or whatever it may be, casually mention that it’s your honeymoon. People love romance, so they might just give you a freebie, an upgrade or a warm(er) welcome.

    8. Get travel insurance

    Just in case.

    9. Consider when you eat out

You don’t have to eat at a restaurant for every single meal. Go to local markets or grocery stores and gather a few bits and pieces to take on a picnic, to have in your room or to make a meal yourself. This way you’ll also experience more of your surroundings and of the culture than you would sitting down at a restaurant three times a day.

    10. Go on the hunt

Again, you’ll need to take some time and do your research with this one, but make an effort to hunt for some deals. Many hotels, destinations, cruises and airlines have regular deals – whether it’s for honeymooners, seasonal or simply because. Make use of them and be sure to make some calls to figure out if they don’t offer any additional deals. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

Planning your wedding is definitely a stressful task, so the honeymoon might not even be an aspect you’re focused on right now, however, there is one additional task you will have to accomplish before racing off to you lush honeymoon – packing. And because swimwear will make up the most of your tropical honeymoon wardrobe, we’ve put together a quick guide:

If you’re headed to the tropics you will probably be living in your bathing suit and a cover-up, but dining at a restaurant or perhaps dancing or exploring may also be on the cards.

You’ll probably want to take at least two swimsuits. This way you can alternate them. To have even more options, look for mix and match bikini styles, so you can get four looks out of two suits. If you’re not a fan of bikinis, try a one-piece, which is perfect for lounging around, going for a dip, and can even double as a bodysuit! You’ll also want to pack a swimsuit that you’re comfortable with wearing in a spa.

For the honeymoon activities other than lounging by the beach/pool, you will need a maxi dress or skirt that you can dress up or down. Cover-ups are a necessity as you can easily transition from the beach to dinner and drinks – think beautiful wraps or sarongs. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, but this is also the perfect time to play around with those beautiful swimsuits that have been hiding in your closet!
