Nevada voters have overturned an 18-year old amendment and became the first American state to officially remove a ban on same-sex marriage from its state constitution.

Despite the Supreme Court ruling same-sex marriage legal in every state across the country in 2015, an inactive ban from a 2002 amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman remained. Nevada was one of 30 states to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

During Tuesday’s [November 3] election, state residents voted in support of the “Marriage Regardless of Gender Amendment” to have the inactive ban removed from the constitution. According to Nevada secretary of state, about 62% were in favour while 38% of residents voted against the amendment. Now, marriage will be defined as between couples, regardless of gender, although religious organisations and clergypersons will still retain the right to refuse to solemnise a marriage.

“This overwhelming majority should be a reminder that LGBTQ equality is not just the right thing to do, it is exactly what Nevadans want,” said Briana Escamilla, Human Rights Campaign’s Nevada director.

“It’s the fix we need to make here,” André Wade, head of Silver State Equality, told KTNV-TV. “We have discriminatory language in the constitution, and we need to take it out. We know Nevadans value equality, and we want our constitution to mirror that.”

Concerns of a conservative majority on the Supreme Court have increased following the appointment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Removing the same-sex ban thus acts as a way for residents to offer some form of protection for same-sex couples, regardless of any future federal moves in the Supreme Court.

Talk about an out-of-this-world proposal! This couple got engaged while on a ZERO-G space simulation flight.

Xavier Andrews popped the question to his girlfriend Shanté Cosme aboard the ZERO-G in a modified Boeing 727-200, a commercial way to experience what it’s like to be in space without actually going there.

Speaking to Brides, Andres explained that he wanted to do something special for the proposal.

“We’re an adventurous couple,” he said“We’ve been to 12 countries together and have done everything from exploring the caves of Railay Beach, Thailand to snowmobiling the Vatnajökull glaciers of Iceland—so it felt right.”

The incredible images, captured by photographer Steve Boxall, shows the couple floating as if on Cloud 9 as the proposal takes place.

Cosme was suspicious of her partner and had already sussed out that a proposal was near.

“When we got to the Blade lounge in NYC and I realized we’d be taking a helicopter to the airport, I thought, ‘This would be a really cool way to propose,’” she told Brides. “People kept pulling him aside and he assured me he was just handling the bill, but I knew something was up.”

While enjoying the experience, Andrews pulled out the ring, which was fastened to him by string to keep it from floating away.

Cosme immediately burst into tears at the sight of the ring and accepted the proposal before Andrews even officially asked.

Scottish couple Melissa Russell, 27, and Shannon McKenna, 26, have been together for six years, and getting married was not part of their plans. However, like many couples this year, the COVID-19 pandemic made them realise that they want to spend the rest of their lives together.

Melissa and Shannon had hoped for a marquee in their garden for the wedding and a few nights away at a hotel.

Melissa, who is an employee at McDonald’s, spoke to her boss about her frustrations of planning a wedding during a pandemic. Her employer, Kate, then pulled out all the stops to give them a dream wedding reception in the fast-food restaurant.

The two were legally married by a humanist celebrant in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, and then went to celebrate the rest of the day at the McDonald’s Melissa works at.

On the menu for the newlyweds was a three-course meal containing Mozzarella Dippers or Chicken Selects for starters, anything on the menu for the main course and ice cream was served in crystal glasses, or apple pie and ice cream.

The couple were over the moon and so emotional about the whole thing,

“It was an absolutely fabulous day. Kate is such a lovely, helpful person and she went above and beyond, she did so many things we didn’t expect, she got the tables decorated,” said Melissa.

The newlyweds then spent a night in Loch Lomond for a brief honeymoon, before returning home.

A young Indian couple has received mounting backlash after posting an intimate post-wedding photoshoot that has since gone viral on social media.

Couple Lekshmi and Hrushi Karthik tied the knot in September, and wanted a memorable photoshoot to make up for their downscaled wedding ceremony in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the images, they can be seen laughing, hugging and chasing after each other in a tea plantation, while covered in white silk comforters borrowed from their hotel room. Hrushi’s photographer friend Akhil Karthikeyan was enlisted to be behind the camera, reports the BBC.

“It was great fun. We laughed through it. We were really excited about it. It was a part of our honeymoon, we were just married and we felt free,” Hrushi told the BBC.

Just a few days later, Akhil uploaded the images onto Facebook and was shocked at the amount of hate the images received. Most of the abuse was directed at Lekshmi.

“We received two days of relentless hate,” Lekshmi explained. “People said we were showing nudity, they asked if we were wearing clothes underneath, they said we were doing it for attention and seeking publicity.”

“It was really awful for me. They were harassing me much more than him. They were telling me to act in porn films, I was body shamed,” she says. “The trolls included a lot of women too. They found my earlier photos where I was wearing no makeup and began comparing, saying look how ugly she looks in these photos.”

However, there were those publicly supporting the couple. Many advised them to ignore the haters.

Unfortunately, their family was not in full support of the images. Many asked them to remove the images and even removed the couples from family WhatsApp groups for refusing. The pair told the BBC they refuse to take the images down, as that would mean they are giving in to their bullies.

“If we do, they will take it as admission of our guilt, that we did something wrong,” says Lekshmi. “But we didn’t do anything wrong.”

An American woman named Cassey joined Dr Phil on his talk show to talk about her determination to find “the one”, even after being married a whopping 10 times already. She went to the show to seek advice on what she could be doing wrong for her relationships to not be working out.

Her longest marriage was eight years and her shortest one was six months before they divorced. Her second marriage lasted for a  period of seven years, and they share a son. They were engaged for two and a half years but the cracks appeared after they got married. Casey believes that her husband stopped loving her as he had stopped saying it.

According to Cassey, she is usually the one to end the marriage by saying she cannot take it anymore. She has cheated in a relationship, but only after her partner cheated first, she claims.

This woman is so determined to find Mr Right that she says she doesn’t care how many husbands it takes. The 56-year-old successful businesswoman is currently married but the marriage is almost over. Cassey says that this has gotten to the point where she is either going to laugh or cry about it and sometimes she does both.

Cassey said she’s likely to call it quits with her current husband, who she claims labelled her a “control freak.” Even if the marriage ends, she is still determined to find her true love and settle down.

Nicki Minaj shocked everyone when she announced that she was starting a family. Things have moved quickly for the singer, who got married last year and retired from her music career to focus on her family life.

The rapper is also celebrating her first year anniversary with her husband, Kenneth Petty. She posted a picture of their son’s foot on Instagram and captioned it “happy anniversary my love”.

Minaj dated rapper Kenneth Petty for almost a year before she hinted that they got married a year ago on October 21. However, they have known each other longer than that.

They met in New York when Minaj was a teenager. She once mentioned in one of her songs “I met my husband when I was 17 out in Queens / If you love it, let it go, now I know what that means / While he was up North for a body / I bodied everybody and got known for my body”.

In December 2018, she uploaded two pictures of them together during a trip to Turks and Caicos. In June 2019, the couple had their first marriage license but there was a mishap and they picked up their second one in August. They officially married in October in a ‘secret ceremony’. Nicki explained that they had a small ceremony because she was traveling and busy with an album, but she was determined to marry the Clyde to her Bonnie.

A day after they officially got married, she was already speaking about starting a family, and on September 30, 2020 she gave birth to their son.

Now that her album is done and she has started a family, fans are waiting in anticipation of the big wedding she promised her fans.

Couples will often go to great lengths for a truly unique wedding photo, but some locations are a step too far. A British couple learned this the hard way and is now under fire for posing on live train tracks in North Yorkshire.

The unidentified couple is now unwillingly the face of a new campaign to educate people on rail safety.

In a Twitter post, the national Network Rail in Scotland called the photoshoot ‘plain stupidity’, and urged residents to practice basic rail safety at all times.

British Transport Police Superintendent Alison Evans explains that anyone walking across a railway line is putting themselves in danger.

“Every time someone strays onto the rail network they are not only putting themselves at risk of serious, life-threatening injury but also delaying essential journeys.

“Passenger and freight trains are still using the railway 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing much-needed services of transporting people and goods. Please, stay off the track”.

According to Network Rail and British Transport Police, there have been 5100 trespassing incidents over their summer months, and 1239 incidents recorded in September, their worst recorded month in the last five years.

A proposal is always a sweet moment, and when it goes perfectly, it can bring some serious tears of joy. This public proposal at a theme park really had people feeling the love, and has since gone viral.

In a video shared to social media, believed to have been filmed at Hopi Hari theme park in Brazil, a couple can be seenstanding on a flight of stairs when one of the men suddenly goes down on one knee and takes out a white box.

His partner stands in shock as the proposal ensues. Instead of responding, he walks away and rummages through his bag to pull out a white box of his own.

Clearly the pair are on the same wavelength, and secretly planned to propose to each other on the exact same day.

It is uncertain when the video was first shared, but it has since racked up a whopping 28-million views on social media. It went viral when it was reshared to Reddit, and the app’s users could not believe how romantic and sweet the moment was.

“This really is a testament to their love that they are literally on the same page at the same time,” wrote on Reddit user.

Health officials in New York City were forced to shut down an ultra-orthodox Jewish wedding planned for Monday, October 19 that was expected to bring 10 000 guests together in Brooklyn, one of the city’s COVID-19 hotspots.

New York has had 519 994 confirmed coronavirus cases and 33 477 deaths. It is the state with the most COVID-19 cases by far, although they currently have the lowest rate of new cases.

State health commissioner Dr Howard A. Zucker had the sheriff’s deputies deliver an order to the Hasidic synagogue, Congregation Yetev Lev D’Satmar, warning them to follow health protocols and limit gatherings to less than 50 people. A section 16 order was issued, which carries a $10 000 daily fine if violated.

The synagogue claimed they were victims of “unwarranted attacks” by city officials. They said that the wedding, held for a grandson of the synagogue’s rabbi, would be attended by close family only, and that the public were invited to participate for a short period of time.

The wedding will continue but will be restricted to an even smaller guest list of close family only. Leaders in the orthodox Jewish community are planning a mass prayer via phone for Tuesday, October 20 in response to the wedding’s shutdown.
