Trying to keep the romance alive while being separated from your love doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal! There are many virtual options for a great date night.

You’re not alone as many couples around the world are figuring out how to navigate the world of love, while being stuck at home. To make things a little easier, here are some virtual date night ideas to try out:

    – Take a virtual tour

Since self-isolation and legally enforced quarantines are global, many facilities have decided to help ease cabin fever by making virtual tours available. Why not take advantage of this while you still can? You can see things from all around the world, with your partner (virtually) by your side, without leaving the comfort and safety of your room!

Here are some to check out:

    1. L.A.’s Getty Museum
    2. The Louvre
    3. The Smithsonian’s Natural History
    4. The National Women’s History Museum’s NASA exhibit
    5. The San Diego Zoo live cam
    6. Tennesee Aquarium’s River Otter Falls Cam
    7. International Wolf Centre’s ambassador wolves

    – Dig Deep

If you’re looking to become closer during your time (physically) apart, answer The 36 Questions That Lead to Love. This little back and forth quiz was published in 2015 and is considered one of the best conversational road maps around. Find out more about each other, by asking questions you never thought about before.

    – Distanced Dinner Date

Just because you’re in separate locations, doesn’t mean a dinner date is off the table. You can each get dressed up, grab some food, light some candles and eat together on a Skype call. Play some music in the background for that extra bit of mood-setting.

    – Online games

The internet is filled multiplayer games for you and your partner to try out. Explore a new universe together, by playing online together. Some couples have even taken to gaming weddings.

    – Watch a movie in sync

Use the chrome extension Netflix Party, to watch a movie together. The extension allows you to connect your Netflix accounts so that your movie plays at exactly the same time. There’s also a chat bar for running commentary between the two of you during the movie.

    – Plan your next in person date

If you haven’t already, you can spend some time together deciding on what you’ll do as soon as the lockdown is over. Plan a big, special date to celebrate being by each others sides again.

Of course, for your honeymoon you’d prefer to be lounging on the beach on a tropical island or roaming the streets in a city unfamiliar to you. However, when the President calls for a national lockdown, and all travel is banned, a stay home honeymoon is what’s on the cards!

Fret not though, newly weds! Your quarantine honeymoon can be great too. After all, you’re in this together, and who doesn’t want to be stuck alone with their number one person? We guarantee there are tons of couples who want to be in you shoes right now.

If you’re trying to turn your self-isolation into a bae-cation, here are some things you should do:

    – Unplug

First and foremost, take some time off from technology. Turn those phones off and unplug! You’ll feel more like you’re away, because you won’t have people texting and calling all day.

    – Decorate your bedroom

Turn your bedroom into a honeymoon suite. Lay out some new bedding, put some chocolates on the pillows, and create a romantic getaway hotel in your own home.

    – Activities by candle light

Candles make everything 100 times more romantic, don’t you agree? Fill up the bath and add some bubbles, pop the lights off and add some candles. There you have it, a perfect honeymoon activity.

If bubble baths are not your thing, or your tub is too small to take the both of you, a candle lit dinner is great too. Cook up something tasty and have a dinner date.

    – Open wedding gifts

Start off your journey together by opening all those gifts you received! It’ll make you feel very special and loved, and you’ll get some constructive things done at the same time.

    – Breakfast in bed

Take turns bringing each other some food to get the day going. Pancakes, waffles, omelettes, go all out.

    – Massages

A whole new definition of “couples massage”. While you can’t go out and get a massage together, you can totally give each other massages. It can be very romantic!

    – Planning

Spend some time planning a trip away. We’re sure you want to take a “real” honeymoon when the lockdown is over. So why not use some of this time to get ahead with the planning!

Planning your honeymoon is an exciting time for any soon-to-be married couple. It can, however, be difficult to decide on a destination that meets all your expectations. A major trend in travel currently is eco-conscious tourism.

Making as little impact on the environment as possible is something people are aiming to include in their travels. If you want to jump on the proverbial bandwagon, here are some eco-friendly resorts and destinations to consider for your honeymoon.

    Wolwekrans Eco Lodge

While they may not always end in Happily Ever After, these wedding reality shows are guaranteed to keep you entertained in the run up to your big day. They might also make you feel happier about your own wedding plans when you see what a disaster these can be by comparison.

Here are the best wedding reality TV shows we love to watch:

    – Love is Blind

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Acast (@acastforthestories) on

The recently released Netflix series follows a few single people as they enter the ‘experiment.’ In 10 days, they date a host of people from within ‘pods’ that only let them hear each others voices. By the end of the 10 days, six couples came out engaged without ever having seen each other. This might seem wild enough on it’s own but the series goes even further. The couples then move in together and meet each others families before walking down the aisle to be asked whether “love is truly blind” and they commit to the partner they have known for about a month. As expected, the drama is high as the couples find out who the other person really is.

    -Married at First Sight

A post shared by Married At First Sight (@mafs) on

Married at First Sight has been around since 2014 and is still going strong on TLC. The premise of the show is that couples are chosen and paired up and meet for the first time at the end of the aisle. After getting married, the couple are filmed settling into their new life and after six to eight weeks, they decide whether to stay married or get divorced. Despite being criticised for being a westernised version of arranged marriage for entertainment purposes, it is addictive and keeps you hooked trying to guess who will make it.

    – The Wedding Bashers

Wedding Bashers combines the voting fun of Idols with the high stakes pressure of a wedding. Four wedding experts go to different couples weddings and judge them on the entire event. They vote on the weddings, with their vote counting 50% with the South African audience voting from home. If you’re in the middle of planning your wedding, rewatching the first two seasons might be a great way to pick up some ideas, or realise what not to do.

    -Our Perfect Wedding

Another South African wedding show, Our Perfect Wedding airs on Mzansi Magic and follows a couple planning their  “perfect wedding” as they check off the items on their wish list. It’s a simple show that follows all the drama going into planning a wedding, with the couple declaring at the end whether or not their wedding was truly perfect. On top of being entertaining, watching other couples go through the entire wedding process might help you realise that your wedding will always have some stumbling blocks but in the end can still be perfect.

    -Extreme Engagement

Unlike the others, this show doesn’t hop straight into marriage. An engaged couple travels the world to experience marriage customs from a variety of cultures. The main goal is to see whether these extremely differing styles of marriage will bring out the best or the worst in their relationship. While it has been criticised for its problematic depictions of other cultures, it is interesting to witness the ways marriage is different all over the world. It might just give you a little time to think what marriage means for you.

    – Kom ons trou, nou! (Let’s get married, now!)

Although it’s in Afrikaans, this show has subtitles so you can follow on this wild ride. In every episode, a woman who is tired of waiting for her partner to propose secretly plans their wedding and then proposes to them in front of all their surprised guests. There really isn’t much to learn from this series, since you’ve already got the proposal and are planning the wedding but it’s pure reality TV entertainment.

When you find your partner for life, you feel like the luckiest person on earth. Getting married and going on a honeymoon only adds to these feelings of good fortune. For some, this makes them want to spread the joy and abundance.

A good way to do this is by spending your honeymoon giving back. The experience will bring you and your significant other closer together and will be a memory you’ll cherish forever. On top of that, only good can come from starting your marriage off on a charitable note.

This is actually more common than you’d expect. For couples who love to give back, an alternative to honeymooning is slowly rising in popularity. The trend has been termed ‘honeyteering’. If you’re keen to use your honeymoon to give back, here are some ways you could do it:

    – Ask your hotel

When you arrive at your honeymoon destination, you can speak to the hotel staff about local non-profit organisations you can lend some of your time to. They would be able to direct you to the best places to go and the best things to do in order to ensure people and places are left better than you found them.

    – Pack for a purpose

Pack for a purpose is a non-profit that helps you give back. As you pack for your holiday, you should pack some items needed by the communities you’re planning to visit. When you arrive at your destination, handing over the package is easy. Pack for a purpose would have ensured that there is a drop off spot close to your hotel.

Check their website for a list of locations and supplies needed for each destination.

    – Build a home

Habit for Humanity is well-known for its volunteering programmes. You could use your honeymoon to attend one of these programmes and construct, renovate and provide disaster relief for those in need.

    – Create a Honeyfund for donations

Similar to a wedding registry, couples have begun to use honeymoon registries too. You could create a registry using honeyfund, a website which allows you to organise cash-gifts, and indicate that all money will go to a specific charity.
