    Announcements

In a world where every milestone seems to come with a social media announcement, sharing your engagement can feel surprisingly complicated.

Do you post immediately? Do you wait? Do you upload a polished carousel, a candid Reel, or simply change your relationship status and call it a day?

The truth is that there’s no single “right” way to announce your engagement online. In fact, one of the biggest trends we’re seeing this year – is couples choosing authenticity over perfection and sharing their news in a way that feels true to their relationship rather than what social media expects.

Here are a few tips to keep in your back pocket before you hit post.

    Tell your inner circle first

Before your engagement appears on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook, make sure the people closest to you hear the news directly from you.

Parents, siblings, grandparents and close friends should ideally find out through a phone call, FaceTime or in-person conversation before discovering it on their feed. It’s a small gesture that means a lot and helps avoid hurt feelings later.

Once your VIPs know, you can share the news with the wider world.

Choose photos that actually feel like you

Not everyone has a perfectly captured proposal moment, and that’s okay.

Maybe your partner was wearing their favourite old hoodie. Maybe your nails weren’t done. Maybe the proposal photos are slightly blurry because everyone was too excited to focus.

The good news? Highly polished engagement announcements are no longer the only option.

While professional engagement shoots remain timeless, candid moments, photo dumps and authentic snapshots continue to resonate because they tell a genuine story. Use photos that feel meaningful to your relationship, whether that’s a professionally planned shoot or a spontaneous phone photo from the day itself.

    Don’t overthink the caption

Your caption doesn’t need to be a novel.

Some couples love sharing the full proposal story. Others simply post a ring emoji, a date, or a short sentence that says everything.

Whether you choose a heartfelt paragraph, a favourite song lyric or a simple “Forever starts here”, the best captions are the ones that sound like you.

One thing worth avoiding? Anything that feels performative or turns the announcement into a competition. Let the focus stay on the joy of the moment rather than the size of the ring, the extravagance of the proposal or proving anything to anyone.

Consider a Reel, TikTok or soft launch

In 2026, engagement announcements aren’t limited to static photos.

Many couples are creating short Reels featuring proposal clips, reaction videos, behind-the-scenes footage or even a collection of favourite moments from their relationship.

Others are embracing the “soft launch” approach by sharing subtle hints before making an official announcement. Think a glimpse of a ring in a photo dump, a cryptic caption or a casual post that lets followers connect the dots themselves.

If a grand reveal doesn’t feel like your style, that’s perfectly okay too.

    Create boundaries around wedding content

Being engaged is exciting, but not every wedding planning update needs its own feed post.

If you want to document venue visits, dress appointments, menu tastings and DIY projects, Stories remain one of the best places to do it. Creating a dedicated highlight allows you to keep those memories in one place without overwhelming your followers.

Remember: your engagement announcement is about sharing a special moment, not creating content on a schedule.

    The bottom line

There is no rulebook when it comes to announcing your engagement online. Some couples post within minutes, while others wait days, weeks or even months before sharing the news. Some opt for a cinematic Reel, while others keep it simple with a single photo and a few heartfelt words.

The beauty of modern engagement announcements is that they can look however you want them to. So, whether you’re planning a grand reveal or a quiet soft launch, focus less on what will perform well online and more on what feels right for you. Because long after the likes and comments have faded, you’ll remember the excitement, the love and the moment you said “yes.”

Getting engaged is an incredible moment that both you and your partner will never forget and will want to share with the world. In the digital age, social media is the way to go for engagement announcements but don’t rely on a basic post, get creative with it!

    1. Plain and simple

A straightforward way to announce your engagement is to show off the star of the show: your sparkling engagement ring! Have your soon-to-be husband pose in the background for an extra detail.

    2. Picture pawfect

Including your furry friends in your engagement post could deliver an adorable result. Dress them up and include them in your engagement shoot to have them share their humans’ exciting news. After all, dogs are a (wo)man’s best friend!

    3. Include the family

If you and your partner have kids include them in your engagement post to make it a special family affair. Have them share the news by posing with your ring or props, or even wearing clothing items that sport sayings such as ‘Mom and Dad are getting married!’

    4. Share it

Get personal with your engagement post by adding in details about you and your partner. Do you have a favorite movie? Why not make a movie poster as your engagement post. Are you or your significant other artistic? Why not make a doodle depicting the proposal to share on social media. You could also make a collage of all your treasured moments together. For example a movie ticket from your first date and all the mementos you have collected throughout your time together.

Instagram’s Story feature is also a creative way to announce your engagement. You could make a series of stories depicting you and your partner’s love journey that led to the engagement or have fun with the Boomerang feature or some filters on your Instagram Story.

    5. Hold a shoot

You can never go wrong with a traditional, timeless engagement shoot. These photos will never go out of style and will be a moment in time captured that you can cherish forever. You could have the engagement shoot at a place which is special for you and your partner, like the restaurant where you had your first date, or if you both love the outdoors, the beach or forest. You can also try to hire a photographer or even set up a hidden camera yourself to capture the exact moment you or your partner proposes. These photos will depict the shock, joy and excitement you felt during the proposal and take you back to the special moment when you look at them later.

    6. Have a party

If you prefer to not share your exciting news on social media, why not have an engagement party with your family and close friends to make your special announcement. Sharing your happiness and excitement with your family and friends while being surrounded by good food, wine and loads of love is a joyous occasion. If you have a date set for your wedding you can also send out save-the-dates to announce your engagement if you want to avoid a social media post. It will be a lovely surprise for your friends and family to receive a save-the-date!

In the end it is not about the engagement post or the amount of likes you receive on said post, but rather about you and your partner, the two lovebirds. Have fun and get creative with your engagement posts but let the main focus remain on the love you and your partner share.

Some proposals are beautiful. Some are emotional. And then there are the rare ones that somehow belong to everyone who witnesses them.

Aqib and Laiqah’s engagement at Maiden’s Cove in Cape Town has become one of South Africa’s most talked-about love stories. Sure, the romantic setting played a role, but it’s also because of what unfolded around them: a spontaneous, overwhelming wave of celebration from complete strangers.

The moment was captured by photographer Bianca Asher, who later shared the full behind-the-scenes story on her blog. What was meant to be an intimate seaside proposal quickly turned into something far more unexpected, eventually gaining more than 64 000 likes on Instagram and becoming a powerful example of Ubuntu in action.

When Aqib reached out to me a few months ago to plan his proposal I don’t think either of us could have imagined how everything would unfold. We went back and forth on location ideas – with the main focus being on a beautiful backdrop and catching Laiqah’s reaction. When I arrived at Maiden’s Cove I saw a lot of tour busses and even more people, which was not in the plan of a quiet proposal shoot. Aqib and Laiqah were down the road at Plato grabbing coffees as the decoy plan to go on a walk for the proposal. I was in comms with Aqib and tentatively changing the location to somewhere quieter, but as I was waiting the crowds dispersed around the cove. When he messaged to let me know he was a few minutes out – I just asked a handful of students who were directly in my shot if they wouldn’t mind moving for a few minutes while I captured the moment. They were really excited and asked if they could watch and I said of course, just act natural. I don’t know exactly what happened but I’m assuming a few texts were sent out to other students who were there and as Aqib dropped to his knee – these huge cheers broke out behind us. It was the most incredible moment of Ubuntu and celebration between strangers.

Instead of the usual quiet anticipation that surrounds a proposal shoot, the cove erupted into cheers as Aqib dropped to one knee, turning an already emotional moment into a shared celebration between strangers, students, tourists and passersby.

I’m getting goosebumps just typing out what happened. It’s hard to explain how beautiful it is when a community comes together to celebrate strangers. I’ve been capturing proposals for years and I love being part of the best days of people’s lives – but this was something I’ll never forget. There’s nothing like the incredible spirit of South African’s coming together to celebrate joy. Everyone is asking for an invite to the wedding so it seems like we’ll need a stadium to pull this off. It would be incredible to keep this good cause going and raise funds for charities while celebrating their love. If any brands and vendors are keen to get involved – reach out in the comments or email me.

The reaction online has been just as warm as the moment itself, with South Africans embracing Aqib and Laiqah as “their” couple.

At its heart, this proposal story is a reminder of how quickly strangers can become a community when something real and joyful unfolds in front of them. And in this case, that joy happened to be two people saying yes to forever, framed by the Atlantic Ocean and a chorus of unexpected cheers.

There’s a new chapter unfolding for Sue Duminy, and this one comes with a sparkling ring and a resounding “yes.”

The Cape Town-based content creator took to Instagram to share the news of her engagement, posting a heartfelt video of the moment her partner proposed at the iconic AfrikaBurn.

“I said… yes,” she captioned the post, alongside a message reflecting on a love that feels grounding and deeply aligned.

She previously introduced her partner, Roberto Franco, to her followers late last year. Since then, the couple have shared snippets of their life together — from travel escapes to festival moments.

Calling the family and posting on the Gram? Duh! But what else should you do after he’s popped the question?

    1 CELEBRATE!

This doesn’t have to be a full-on engagement party just yet. In the days after you announce your impending nuptials, your phone will be buzzing off the hook with well-wishers hoping to see you as soon as possible and hear all about how he got down on one knee. So plan a little get-together to pop bottles with your nearest and dearest and tell them everything. Or, if you are a more low-key kind of couple, simply have a special night for two to revel in all the butterflies you’re feeling at the moment. Being engaged is a wonderful time. Enjoy it to the fullest.

2 GET YOUR RING INSURED (AND SIZED!)

The months leading up to your wedding are going to be split between days of pure joy and days of pure admin… So. Much. Admin. First up: You now have a small fortune on your finger, so be sure to protect your new asset and get it insured. Your guy should’ve been supplied with a valuation certificate upon purchase, but if not, take it to any reputable jeweller to get a value estimate. Send this to your insurance company to get it covered in case it gets lost or stolen. And while you’re at it, have it sized perfectly for your finger to make losing it less likely.

    3 SET A (VAGUE) DATE

After “Let me see the ring!” and “How did he propose?”, the next most asked question you’ll get at this stage is “When’s the wedding?”. Unless you know exactly how it’s going to go down to the very last detail on a sunny day in February, you probably haven’t even thought about a date. Chat to your hubby-to-be and come up with a ‘thereabouts’ answer. Whether it’s “next summer” or “in three years’ time”, giving people some sort of timeline will ease the bombardment while also letting your guests mentally save the date.

4 DETERMINE THE TYPE OF WEDDING

Small getaway wedding or the do of the year at an exclusive wine farm? Figuring this out with your man is the best starting point of the planning to come, as it will help you determine everything from what venues to look at, to your all-important budget and guest list size.

    5 GATHER INSPIRATION

Real talk time. Everyone from Chatty Cathy at the office to your mom and well-meaning-but-pushy friends are going to start pressuring you to begin planning. There’s so much to do, after all. Yes, Cathy, there is… but there’s no need to jump into contacting vendors and venues now if you don’t have the basics decided yet. You’ll cut down on a lot of wasted time if you know what you want before getting stuck in. Get on Pinterest and flip through wedding magazines. This is the fun part! Make a mood board with the images you love and you’ll soon start to see your dream day to come to life. Once you know what you want, seeking out the right vendors for you will be that much easier.

    BOOK AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

Photographers get snapped up way in advance, so if this is a route you want to go down – book it now! Otherwise, call on your creative friends to help set up a photoshoot of the two of you on the beach, in a forest, or even at home just being yourselves. Smartphone cameras are more than enough to get some amazing shots (don’t forget the dreamy filters!).

The world has been tilted on its axis at the news of Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s engagement.

The Blink-182 drummer decided to put a ring on it, and boy, was it a RING. Barker popped the question at Montecito Beach on Sunday, October 17, and social media has been flooded with images of the happy couple ever since. But it’s the enormous engagement ring that has us in a tailspin.

Go big or go home appears to be the route Barker has taken, with Kardashian’s left finger now sporting a giant oval-cut diamond engagement ring worth a whopping $1 million. According to Page Six, her new bling appears to be larger than 15 carats in a pavé or hidden halo setting.

The loved-up couple has been dating since January, though they’ve been friends and neighbours for quite some time with the pair making it Instagram official in February. However, it was their trip to Venice, Italy that really had tongues wagging as the pair was unrelenting when it came to showing off their affection for each other. Kardashian famously dated Scott Disick on-and-off for ten years, with the oldest Kardashian sister noting that they would have still been together having Disick not messed up his sobriety during a KUWTK reunion special in June. The two share three children together, while Barker was previously married to former beauty queen Shanna Moakler. He shares two children with her.

The engagement was a sight to behold too! Countless red roses appeared to envelop Montecito’s white sandy beach, with an array of candles careful placed within a circle of red, adding to the overall ambience.

It looked to be a picture-perfect proposal and we couldn’t be happier for the pair!

After a whirlwind season unlike any we’ve ever seen before, The Bachelorette’s Tayshia Adams has given out her final rose and is engaged to contestant Zac Clark.

The two-part finale of The Bachelorette was, unsurprisingly, dramatic from beginning to end. It saw contestant Brendan leave by choice during his Fantasy suite date, Tayshia send fan-favourite Ivan home and the return of Ben, who was eliminated during Hometowns week.

Ultimately, Tayshia’s heart was clearly with frontrunner Zac. She sent Ben home during their final date because she knew she was going to pick Zac at the end.

The pair then became engaged during the finale episode in a tear-jerker of a scene. Zac proposed with a 3.25 carat Neil Lane ring. Of course, Tayshia accepted and the pair rode of into the sunset in a makeshift taxi.

“If you had told me in March that I’d be getting engaged at the end of the year, I would not have believed it for a second,” Adams told PEOPLE. “But I want to experience life with [Zac] by my side. He’s what I’ve always wanted.”

As if the season was not dramatic enough being filmed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in America, it was made even more complicated when the original lead decided to leave the show a few weeks into filming.

Adams was the second Bachelorette to lead the season, after first pick Clare Crawley left the show with contestant Dale Moss two weeks into filming. The pair formed a fast connection from the minute filming began in June and became engaged during the show’s fourth episode, right before Adams came to replace Crawley as the lead. This is the first time in Bachelor history that a lead had to be replaced mid-season.

Being proposed to is a special moment and for some, may feel like a dream come true. Well, it seems one man took this saying quite literally and decided to propose to his sleeping partner. After sharing the moment on Facebook, social media users across the world were obsessed with finding out the outcome.

On December 9, Facebook user Michael Mayorga dedicated a post to his partner, Jamilah Williams. It wasn’t any old Facebook post, however, it was THE Facebook post to propose to her.

“It’s 5:00AM. for weeks now I been planning on how to pop the question…. you know all my moves and you are one very hard woman to surprise but the jokes on you because now you’re going to wake up with 3 surprises… a phone full of congratulations notifications and text, an engagement ring on your finger and a picture of you sleeping that you don’t want all over the internet . SURPRISE!!! I’ll let y’all know the verdict when she wakes up,” he wrote alongside a picture of the pair in bed, in which he holds up an engagement ring.

This proposal had Facebook friends and strangers obsessed and desperately waiting to find out if she accepted this creative proposal.

“I have questions!! Wait, is she up yet? Did she say yes? Did he get his ass beat for posting this picture! I need answers please!” wrote one user.

“The fact I’ve checked her page like 4 times to see if she woke up yet and I never met this lady a day in my life lol. Let us know how you feel Jamilah!!!” added another.

Luckily Jamilah said yeas. In a Facebook post of her own, she gushed about her “amazing” partner.

Glee star Amber Riley and her boyfriend Desean Black are newly engaged! The pair took to Instagram to announce the big news, which is extra special as the couple met through the social networking app.

In a video posted to her page, Amber showed off sparkling engagement ring. She captioned it, “There was a time when I thought I didn’t want or deserve this kind of love.I’m looking at a man who changed my mind. My time by myself, loving on myself, getting comfortable with myself, prepared me for you, and prepared me for this.”

Desean also went on Instagram and wrote a beautiful caption with a picture of the duo.

“Fellas, when a woman looks at you like this, it’s a clear indication that you’re doing the right thing, Now, when she delivers unconditional love that you’ve never experienced, it’s another clear indication that you’ve found the one.”

“”Only a fool would let someone as special as this slip away. So I did what any wise man would do and put a ring on it. I love you to pieces @msamberpriley, or should I say the future Mrs. Black,” he continued.

The pair met through Instagram DMs and the Glee star was the one that approached Desean. She inboxed him asking how he was.

While the couple have never been public about their personal life and romance,  Amber went public with their relationship on October 12 by posting the ‘how it started vs how it’s going’ challenge.

Proposals are romantic occasions, and usually don’t involve a physical response. However, this bride misunderstood the moment and ended up slapping her partner as he popped the question.

In a video posted to TikTok, Gracie O’Neill shared a throwback video from her husband’s Disneyland proposal years ago. The pair pose for pictures in front of Disney’s castle before her husband, or boyfriend at the time, goes down on one knee to propose.

As he does, his bride-to-be jokingly slaps him on top of the head, believing the moment to be a fake proposal. Her husband has reportedly “fake proposed” to her before.

“This time I’m not kidding,” her groom-to-be says in the video. Gracie appears shocked and breaks down in tears of happiness before accepting the proposal.

The original TikTok video has since gone viral, earning over a 5.6million views.
