The coronavirus pandemic has swept the world, affecting more than just our health. From travel to the economy, the outbreak has affected almost every industry around the world. Even the wedding industry cannot remain unscathed. Here’s what you need to consider in our new reality.

Destination weddings:

If you’ve planned a destination wedding, you might have to rethink it. The disease has reached over 100 countries, with the worst affected being in Europe and Asia. Wuhan, China, the centre of the outbreak, as well as the entire country of Italy have been quarantined.

If you’ve planned a destination wedding in any of the coronavirus-affected countries listed by the World Health Organisation, you’ll have to research any government advice, travel bans or restrictions to determine whether you’ll even be able to make it to your wedding. Stay in contact with your vendors to discuss your options. Importantly, make sure you have wedding insurance to cover any last minute changes. Instead of cancelling, postponing your wedding for a year might be a good plan.

Wedding dresses:

Some brides might be without their dream dress come wedding day. James Marcum, CEO of the largest seller of wedding gowns in the United States, David’s Bridal, told CNN that the situation in China will most likely cause a great disruption to the production of wedding dresses as well as bridesmaid dresses. With the coronavirus outbreak, many factories have temporarily closed their doors to help curb the spread of the disease. Some factories are slowly reopening, but the loss in work has created a production delay which will slow-down the already intricate, time-consuming process of making a wedding dress.

To ensure your dress is done on time, consider having your dress made local and don’t have any fabrics imported. Make use of the fabrics already available.

International guests:

If you have friends and family living abroad in areas that have confirmed coronavirus cases, you could put your own guests at risk. Remember: a wedding gathers a large amount of people in one confined location, and there’s a lot of hugging and kissing happening.

Make sure to stipulate that if your guests have been experiencing flu-like symptoms or have come in contact with anyone who has recently travelled to China or Italy then its advisable that they do not attend the wedding.

Honeymoon:

Your international honeymoon might have to wait a bit longer. With the travel bans / restrictions being put in place in various countries, many newlyweds are ringing in their honeymoon in quarantine. Mauritius, a popular honeymoon destinations, has placed travel bans for anyone coming from South Korea or the three northern Italian provinces most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. 34 South Korean newly-weds were recently placed in isolation by authorities due to fears over the coronavirus, according to Seoul officials.

If you’ve planned an international honeymoon, do your research into their travel restrictions. However, many governments have advised against non-essential travel, so realistically you might have to postpone your honeymoon.

Animals can be pretty pesky, but also make some amazing moments happen. During this couple’s wedding photoshoot, one giraffe decided to get in on the fun and steal the groom’s turban.

The hilarious moment took place at the Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu, California. While posing for pictures, the bride and groom were surprised when the animal reached down and plucked the grooms turban off his head. The giraffe’s name is Stanley, and he is an internet-famous member of the ranch. Celebrities such as the Kardashian/Jenner clan and comedienne Whitney Cummings are all huge fans of the beautiful creature.

Luckily, the bridal couple saw the humour in the situation.

One year ago, Hollywood’s favourite couple Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez got engaged in the Bahamas. Now, Rodriguez is making a tribute to his future bride to honour their one-year engagement.

Taking to social media, Rodriguez shared a highlight reel showcasing the best moments from their relationship, including the moment he went down on one knee to pop the big question.

“One year ago on a beach in the Bahamas…. I was a nervous wreck, more nervous than my entire playing career, I got down on one knee and asked you a question… you said yes ❤️ ” the former pro baseball player wrote on Instagram. “Jennifer, every moment with you is a blessing. You are my best friend, my inspiration, an amazing mother, and a role model to all. Macha, I am so lucky to be with you. Thank you for making my life better. I can’t wait to make more memories with you. . I love you. #HappyAnniversary ❤️”

The couple plan to marry sometime this year. In a Youtube video, Lopez has spoken about her desire to have a big, traditional church wedding. Considering they share a blended family, the couple plan on involving their four kids in their big day. Lopez’s son Max will reportedly walk her down the aisle.

However, the couple are in no rush to tie the knot. Speaking to Oprah earlier this month, Lopez said, “It’s so funny because when we first got engaged, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to get married in a couple of months,’ ” she told Winfrey. “Like your old thinking comes right back, like all that hopeless romantic that made me get married three times.”

“I said, ‘If we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, what is the rush?’ If that’s what we’re really going to do, if we’re really going to be partners, if we’re really going to try to build something together that we both never had or never felt like we had, which is a family with a husband and a wife, and a mother and father, and we embrace all our children. We show them it’s something that we didn’t have,” she said.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, so why not give them some beautiful drapes? Eyelash extensions have been trending in the beauty world for years ever since they first came on the market. Eyelash extensions can give you a flirty, effortless look to your face and majorly cuts down on your prep time in the morning. If you’re considering adding some drama with these flirty fancies, make sure you know what you’re in for.

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent false lashes glued on top of your own natural ones by a trained technician. Lashes can be made of mink, sable, faux mink, silk, cashmere or synthetic acrylic. The lashes are applied to individual hairs, making every set fully customisable depending on the clients requirements. A typical appointment takes between 1.5-3 hours to complete.

Extension styles are typically broken down into two main categories: classic and volume. Classic is when an individual false lash is applied to an individual natural lash, leaving the most realistic final look. Volume curls offer much more drama as 2-6 lashes bonded together are applied to an individual natural lash. You’ll also have to consider what type of curl you’d like your lashes to have. You can choose between a J curl, B curl, C curl or D curl. The curl you choose should mimic the curl of your natural lashes. Lashes vary in length from 8-14mm, and multiple lengths can be used per set.

Eyelash extensions typically cost between R350 – R800 depending on the salon / technician you use. Refills are cheaper, typically coming in at R200-R450 per fill.

Eyelash extensions typically last 5-6 weeks, but you can get refills from as early as 2 weeks after your initial appointment to main fullness. As your own lashes naturally shed, your extensions with fall out along with them.

There are some that believe that lash extensions cause traction alopecia as the lashes can put weight on your own, but the chance is very slim. This would typically only happen after years of consistent lash extensions and bad aftercare.

Pre-appointment:

  • Pre appointment, make sure to remove any makeup in your eye area.
  • Ask your technician what ingredients are in the lash adhesive they will be using. Glues that contain formaldehyde will irritate your eye, so best steer clear of that! Instead, look out for ingredients like butyl cyanoacrylate and octyl cyanoacrylate, which are much more gentle on the eye.

Post appointment:

  • Make sure to avoid getting water on your eyes for the first 12-24 hours after your appointment to allow the glue enough time to set.
  • Use oil-free cleansers to clean your eye area.
  • Gently brush your lashes with a spoolie brush twice daily
  • Don’t apply mascara to your extensions

After her 1989 wedding, Dayton native Beth Griswold had her wedding dress preserved in the hopes that future generations would wear it after her.  For years, the dress stayed in a box for safekeeping. However, when she finally opened the box three decades later, she found the wrong one.

The wedding dress, a traditional satin gown, had been professionally preserved and sent back to Griswold shortly after her wedding.

“We were told not to open up the dress. If you open up the dress, it will void the warranty. So for 30 years, I didn’t open up the dress,” Beth tells wdtn.com.

Griswold’s wedding dress was a family heirloom. It once belonged to Griswold’s mother, and the plan was for Griswold’s daughter Jessica to also wear the dress when she was ready to marry. The time had finally come for Jessica to be the third generation to wear this dress when she got engaged to her college sweetheart.

“My grandma had worn the same dress that my mom did, and it was beautiful and I loved it. And so, since I’ve been little, I’ve just anticipated I would wear that dress,” says bride-to-be Jessica Griswold.

Finally, the mother and daughter duo opened the box together, but what they found was unexpected. Griswold had been sent someone else’s wedding dress.

“As we’re opening it, I looked and there was all this glitter, and I was like I don’t remember having glitter on my dress,” says Beth. “As we opened it more, and took it out of the box, we realized that it wasn’t my dress.”

Devastated, Griswold contacted the preservers for help but they were no longer in business.

“They have no records. We don’t know if it got mixed up– It could be anywhere in the country,” says Beth. “The person’s dress who we have probably doesn’t even know that they don’t have their dress.”

The mother and daughter are now searching for the original dress, and continue to hold hopes it will come back to them.

This San Antonio couple found out that even the best laid plans often go awry. While on a cruise ship, their plans to marry on the Jamaican shore were ruined when their ship was unable to dock. Luckily for them, the cruise liner decided to throw them a surprise wedding.

San Antonio couple Liza Garcia and Theodore Herrera discovered that their wedding plans were unable to go through as a result of coronavirus fears. Jamaican officials are currently reviewing their policies amid the coronavirus outbreak, meaning that the cruise ship was unable to dock on their shores. Their plan of a Jamaican wedding dashed, Carnival Cruise Line decided to throw the couple an impromptu wedding aboard the ship, with Captain Francesco La Farina presiding over the ceremony.

“All of us on board were heartbroken when we learned that Liza and Theodore weren’t able to go ashore for their wedding. We got together as a team and promised to deliver the dream wedding that they deserve,” said Nikhil Khanna, hotel director on the Carnival Freedom. “At Carnival, we want to make sure our guests are provided the vacation of a lifetime and when these types of unforeseen circumstances come up, we take great pride in creating these surprises and delightful moments that our guests will remember forever.”

The bride was given complimentary spa and makeup appointments to prepare her for the big day. After the nuptials, the crew treated the guests and newlyweds to a buffet, three-tiered wedding cake, an ice-sculpture and a DJ.

Ashton Waters from Foley, Alabama  planned a romantic proposal at the place he and his girlfriend Brittany had their very first date. However, things didn’t work out as planned and Brittany ended up literally sinking in the mud during the big moment.

On their first date, Ashton and Brittany rode quad bikes in a muddy rural retreat called Boggs & Boulders near Andalusia, Alabama.

“Boggs & Boulders is a super special place for us because the first time I asked Brittany on a date she said: ‘Only if we can go to Boggs & Boulders’,” Asthon told SWNS.com. “We’ve had a lot of fun there. We both love to get out in nature and get a little dirty, we love fishing and camping and boating so this seemed like the perfect place for us.”

On the way to their destination, Ashton’s car had gotten stuck in the mud and Brittany got out to push the car. Unfortunately for Brittany, she ended up stuck in the mud herself!

Ashton decided to make the best of the situation and proposed to Brittany right here, sinking mud and all! The ring was a family heirloom from Ashton’s side of the family that he had customised to suit Brittany.

During the proposal he asked: “Since you’re stuck, will you be stuck with me for the rest of your life?”

Brittany happily accepted the proposal.

“I said ‘yes’ straight away…we were both laughing so much. It took two people to haul me out of the mud afterwards,” she said.

Watch the video of their proposal below:

Congrats to the happy couple!
