Five years of marriage is pretty special. Half a decade later you’re still in love and thriving, which is grounds for celebration.

Every year is a special year for a married couple, as it marks another 365 days of their union. However, each anniversary has its own special meaning, according to tradition.

The traditional fifth wedding anniversary is symbolised by wood. Trees have always represented strength and wisdom, making it fitting for this year of marriage. Rounding the five-year mark shows the durability of your relationship.

Here are some traditional wood gift ideas to give your partner:

    – A wooden clock

    – A jewellery box

    – A wooden tree swing

    – A framed picture of you two

    – Serving bowls

    – A rocking chair

    – A personalised cutting/cheese board

    – A puzzle

    – A planter box

    – A wooden map

Carrying a bridal bouquet has been a time-honoured tradition for centuries. In Ancient Rome, brides would carry flowers as they were believed to signify new beginnings, fidelity and hope of fertility.

During the Victorian Era, the act of giving and receiving flowers came to be known as an expression of love. As they were then linked to love and romance, they increasingly became incorportated into weddings.

Flowers all carry their own special meaning, although many modern brides simply opt for the ones they find the most visually pleasing. While classic white lilies or romantic red roses are always in style, we have been loving explosions of colour. Vibrant shades of pinks, yellows and blues offer so much life and personality to your bridal bouquet.

You have two options when opting for this colourful creation. Pick complementary shades of pinks, reds and oranges and calm them down with white flowers, or go big with all the primary coloured-flowers you can find.

Here are some floral bouquets to inspire your own:

One of Hollywood’s most-loved celebrity couples has a pretty sweet love story. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt have been married for a decade, and are a powerhouse team.

The pair met in 2008, and it was love at first sight. Blunt was out for dinner with a friend when Krasinski walked into the same restaurant.

“We were discussing how much I was enjoying being single. And then [my friend] goes, ‘Oh, my God, there’s my friend John.’ And that was it,” Blunt told People TV.

“It was one of those things where I wasn’t really looking for a relationship and I was thinking I’m going to take my time in LA,” Krasinski told Ellen Degeneres. “Then I met her and I was so nervous. I was like, ‘Oh god, I think I’m going to fall in love with her.’ As I shook her hand I went, ‘I like you.'”

In an interview with the Today show, Krasinski credited the hit NBC show The Office for connecting him with his wife. Prior to landing his iconic role as Jim Halpert in the series, the actor was contemplating quitting acting.

“It’s a little bit of an existential crisis after a while because I wouldn’t have met my wife, I wouldn’t have been out in LA. Truly, when I say the show has given me everything, it’s given me everything,” he said.

The pair had an unusual first date. Wanting to do something different, Krasinski decided to take Blunt to a shooting range.

“I decided, ‘I’m gonna really hit the gas and bring her to a gun range.’ I think that I was so sure that I would never end up with her… that I was like, ‘You know what, I’m gonna blow it right away and then that way you don’t feel bad.,” he recalled in an interview with Conan O’ Brien in 2012.

That date turned out to be incredibly successful. Within 10 months the pair were engaged. They tied the knot in Como, Italy a year later in July 2010. Blunt wore a custom cream chiffon Marchesa gown for the festivities. George Clooney was one of their guests.

In February 2014 the pair welcomed their first child, a daughter named Hazel. She got a sibling in 2016 when daughter Violet was born.

The actors decided to work together for the very first time in 2018 and began work on the critically-acclaimed horror film A Quiet Place. The film was directed by Krasinski, while both starred in it. Working together brought them even closer.

“I’ve always been the biggest fan of her, but not until you’re in the room when she does what she does do you know why she’s so phenomenal,” Krasinski said during an interview on The Tonight Show. “She’s unbelievable. The most talented, powerful … kindest person. She makes everyone around her better. So honestly, that was my experience.”

In July of 2020, the pair celebrated a decade of marriage. We can’t wait to see what this incredible couple does next.

Queen Elizabeth said ‘I do’ to the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip 73 years ago on November 20, 1947.

To honour their anniversary, a new image of the couple has been released. In the photograph, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are seen looking at an anniversary card made by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, alongside other cards and letters sent by well-wishers.

The photograph was taken by Chris Jackson Getty in the Oak Room at Windsor Castle earlier this week.

The pair tied the knot at London’s Westminister Abbey back in 1947. 73 years later, they are the longest-married couple in the history of the British monarchy.

They met at a royal wedding when Queen Elizabeth was just eight years old. They fell in love after a second encounter when she was 13 and he 18, and began exchanging letters. In 1946, Philip asked King George VI for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The rest, as they say, is history.

The wedding did not go without incident, however. Elizabeth’s tiara snapped on the morning of the wedding, and Philip was stopped for speeding through central London on the day of the rehearsal dinner (November 19). He reportedly said at the time: “I’m sorry officer, but I’ve got an appointment with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

When she was just 25, Elizabeth’s ascended the throne on June 2, 1953, after her father’s death. Prince Philip was the first to swear allegiance to the new queen, describing himself as her “liege man of life and limb”.

The two have been by each other’s side for many years now, and are a beautiful example of a strong and steadfast marriage. He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years,” said Queen Elizabeth II as she described her husband on their golden anniversary in 1997.

The timing of their anniversary is impeccable, as the Royal Family has been in the news after the latest season of The Crown premiered on November 15. The Netflix show, which chronicles the lives of the monarchy, has drawn criticism for its twisted retelling of facts about real people, many of whom are still alive.

A terminally ill superfan had his final wish fulfilled, thanks to iconic actress Jamie Lee Curtis. The original scream queen officiated the superfan’s wedding less than an hour before his death.

Horror movie-lover Anthony Woodles had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2019. Prior to the diagnosis, the 29-year-old aspiring director had been in contact with Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis.

After informing her of his plans to marry long-term girlfriend Emilee, Curtis offered to officiate the wedding. They planned the big day for September 13.

The day of the ceremony, Woodle’s faced a severe health setback. As he lay unconscious in bed, surrounded by his family, Curtis officiated the wedding via a phone call.

“Anthony and Emilee, all anyone is promised is this moment,” she said during the ceremony. “We live and we love in this moment. May the blessings of God rest upon you, may his peace abide with you, may her spirit illuminate your heart now, in this moment. With the power vested in me by the internet, it is my great pleasure to tell you that you are now married people.”

The ceremony began at 10.30pm, and Woodle died at 11.17pm.

Before his death, Woodle was lucky enough to be the first outsider to watch the upcoming thriller Halloween Kills, the latest in the iconic Halloween-franchise. Director David Gordon Green set up a private screening for Woodle and Emilee.

Some people love going big to pop the big question, and involving a world-famous landmark truly takes the cake. This man got creative with his proposal by involving the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

A Dubai-based Indian national, who has not been named, went down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend of five years on November 4.

Using the world’s tallest structure and building as a backdrop, he projected sweet messages to his future wife.

“You gave me a whole new world”, “Can I have it forever?”, and “I can’t imagine growing old with anyone else”, read the projections.

Speaking to Gulf News, the anonymous man gushed about his partner.

“She’s a very selfless person, always putting others before herself, she gelled well with my entire family more than I ever did. She always gives her unconditional love and she’s always willing to try new things. She’s full of life. It’s cheesy, but I like who I am when I’m with her. We’ve grown together over the years, been on this roller coaster of a life filled with so many emotions, with its ups and downs, with all the perfect imperfections.”

The proposal took months to put together.

“You have no idea how stressed I am with all the arrangements – for the last two months, I’ve been deeply engaged in picking up the perfect diamond. Then I had to plan the Burj Khalifa projection – all while being super secretive about it,” he added.

We all know the tragic story of Princess Charles and the late Princess Diana. The young Diana, plucked from her normal life, became the world’s obsession when it was announced she would marry the future king, Prince Charles.

What many people don’t know, however, is that she very nearly did not become princess. Before they met, Prince Charles was pressured into proposing to someone else.

Prince Charles famously dated future second wife Camilla Parker-Bowles when they were younger, but was forced to break things off because his family had determined she was not a suitable partner for the future King.

In the years after, the prince was pushed toward his cousin (not a first cousin) Amanda Knatchbull. Charles’ great-uncle, Lord Mountbatten had encouraged him to strike up a relationship with Knatchbull, who was his granddaughter, reports royal historian and biographer Robert Lacey.

“Over the years the two cousins did grow close, developing a mutual respect and friendship that has lasted to the present day. But when the prince finally made his proposal in the summer of 1979—shortly before Lord Mountbatten’s assassination by the IRA—the independent-minded Amanda politely turned him down,” wrote Lacey in Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult.

“The surrender of self to a system, she explained, was so absolute when joining the royal family, it involved a loss of independence ‘far greater than matrimony usually invites,'” Lacey writes in the book.

Her reasoning for not accepting the proposal reportedly greatly impacted the future king, and served to confirm his “own belief that to marry into the House of Windsor was a sacrifice that no-one should be expected to make,” wrote Charles’ biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby.

The prince went on to date Diana in 1980, after meeting her through her older sister Lady Sarah, whom he also used to date. The pair announced their engagement on February 24 and married later that year on July 29.

Grooms want to go bold on their big day should opt for a white suit. Crisp, classic, and cool, this look is enduringly stylish.

A white suit works for almost all seasons. It complements a winter wedding and adds a lighter feel to go along with a summer soiree. What’s great about a white suit is that it looks great in any style, from a classic tuxedo to an edgy double-breast.

You can opt for white from head to toe, or bring in some dimension with a coloured shirt or suit lapel. The beauty of this look is that it is easily customisable.

Here are some dapper grooms doing it big:

We had the viral KFC proposal, the Clicks proposal, and now we introduce the Spur engagement. A pair of waiters recently got engaged while serving at the Amigo Spur steak Ranch in the Vaal Mall.

On October 20, Amigo Spur uploaded a video showing the sweet moment Gladwell went down on one knee to pop the big question to his love, Pretty.

In the video, Gladwell can be seen kneeling while holding a plate, which is where the ring was perched. As Pretty realises what is happening, she becomes overwhelmed with emotion and falls to her knees as she cries tears of joy.

The entire restaurant cheers in the background as Gladwell slips the ring on Pretty’s fingers. Watch the sweet moment here:

    Congratulations to the happy couple!
