On the 9th of September 2019, 99 couples decided to tie the knot in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All 99 pairs gathered at The Thean Hou temple to wed in a mass ceremony. The number nine is considered to be very lucky in Chinese culture. This is because ‘nine’ sounds like ‘long-lasting’ in Chinese.

Since the number nine is believed to hold a lot of fortune, September 9, which is the ninth day of the ninth month (9/9) is seen as very lucky this year. The couples decided to commit to one another on this auspicious day, to ensure that their love would be, well, long-lasting.

The Thean Hou temple was filled with the soon-to-be weds and all of their family and friends.

Many couples decided to keep things wedding-traditional and wear classic black suits and white bridal gowns. Other couples opted for a more traditional Chinese feel and wore red as the colour symbolises joy, luck, happiness and fertility.

Before taking their vows, the 99 couples were blessed by a priest in a red robe.

The Chinese Buddhist temple was filled with life as the newly-wed couples gathered to take pictures and celebrate this joyous (mass) occasion.

The former Bachelorette and her fiancé, who met on her season of the show in 2017, recently exchanged vows at the Royalton Suites Cancún in Mexico. The non-televised wedding, which is quite unusual for the franchise, was only attended by a handful of Bachelor Nation alums, which included Kristina Schulman, Astrid Loch, and Bibiana Julian.

The couple exchanged vows in a beautiful “island chic” ceremony in Mexico, recruiting celebrity wedding planner Mikie Russo to put together their gorgeous ceremony filled with lush green and white florals.

It’s her daring take on her bridal look, however, that really caught our eye:

Rachel wore a Randi Rahm gown, which featured a sheer top with short sleeves and a gorgeous sequin leaf print detail. A wide white belt separated her top from her flowing tulle skirt. Bryan also looked super handsome in his tux for the event, which featured a creme jacket with black lapels, a black bow tie and black pants.

Because Rachel initially wanted to wear pants to her wedding, she then changed up her look to a pair of high-waisted shorts later in the day, which still went perfectly with her ‘fancy t-shirt’.

Ellie Goulding and Caspar Jopling recently got married in a lavish event fit for royalty. Although they exchanged vows at the York Minster Cathedral, the party only really started at Castle Howard, a stately home a few miles away. In true Ellie style, she opted for not one, but 5 show-stopping wedding looks, paving the way for ‘royal’ wedding trends to come.

The first look, in which she tied the knot, consisted of a bespoke Chloé gown and a delicate silk tulle veil with an organza collar featuring her and Caspar’s initials. The veil reportedly took 591 hours to make. Talk about detail! The dress itself wasn’t shy of detail either – complete with hand-embroidered White Roses of York and subtle white glass bead embellishments, which took a further 640 hours to create.

The reception saw Ellie in her second ensemble – a sleek off-the-shoulder silk Cady dress, featuring diamond trim detail – a custom Stella McCartney design.

The third dress came straight from the Ralph & Russo AW19 runway – a bodice of pearls and silk, which she paired with an evening skirt.

For her fourth look, she turned to Olivier Rousteing from Balmain. Perfect for dancing the night away, Ellie showed some skin in a short dress with semi-sheer puffed sleeves and a high neckline with a plunging cut-out.

Fifth and finally, to end off her wedding weekend, Ellie appeared in a simple strapless black gown with a full skirt.

Victoria wore an Amaio Swim bridal swimsuit. Made from Italian Euro jersey and French illusion mesh. The swimsuit was embellished with silver beads and cut out details.

The ceremony

This is what the whole weekend led up to. The wedding ceremony.

The blushing bride wore a Phillipa Lepley Couture gown. The dress was made from luxurious silk crepe and consisted of a tight fitting corset along with thin straps. The back of the dress was embellished with buttons while the front featured a satin band.

The bridal gown also included an embroidered veil with unique detailing. “Hand stitched lavender and rose floral embroidery, and two tiny bees meeting in the middle of the veil to represent the city we came from (Manchester),” says Victoria.

Ellie Goulding and Caspar Jopling wed on August 31, 2019. The wedding took place at the York Minster Cathedral in England. Whether it was the star-studded wedding guest list or the hoards of fans that lined the streets, it’s no surprise that the lavish nuptials are being mistaken for a royal affair.

Fans speculate that the couple met through their mutual friend, Princess Eugenie. The English singer-songwriter has been engaged to the art dealer since August 2018. Caspar announced the engagement on Instagram.

Ellie opted for a gothic style wedding gown which was a custom-made Chloé piece. The dress was hand embroidered and featured glass beads, white roses and took a total of 640 hours to make. The bridesmaids all wore beautiful white gowns.

Be careful of what you put out on social media – it’s forever. Videos that grab people’s attention for various reasons often end up going viral. A recent video of a Nigerian bride went viral when it showed her walking away from her own wedding.

The woman can be seen making her way down the aisle with her father by her side. She then stops and you can see her shaking her head. The father seems to be attempting to comfort her. The (almost) bride-to-be kneels down says something to her father, gets up and leaves. The next angle shows her flipping the veil over her face with bouquet in hand.

The cost of a wedding can be quite, well, costly. Most things – from the wedding dress to the venue – can be quite expensive. Opting for a micro wedding is a great option, however one couple from Vereeniging in Gauteng had a better plan. Samkelo and Latoya Khowa tied the knot for only R75.

Instead of spending thousands on a ‘one day event’, they decided to get married at a Home Affairs office. The couple also stated that after their Home Affairs ceremony they bought a car which wouldn’t have been possible if they opted for an over the top wedding. The marriage license was R55 and R20 to release it.

They opted for this budget-friendly option as they were not in the means of having a lavish one. Neither one of them regret this decision as they have chosen a marriage over a wedding.

Samkelo and Latoya met at a church service in 2016 and are not bother by what people have to say about their money-savvy wedding. They are debt free and their main focus is the love they have for one another.

Samkelo comes from humble beginnings. He struggled to get by and eventually had to leave college due to financial issues. Latoya would help him wherever she could. He found a learnership that turned into a permanent position.

The wedding itself was R75 and the couple decided to have an engagement church celebration. Which was still less than R5000.

Polygamy is the practice of being wed to more than one spouse. According to Merriam-Webster polygamy is defined as “marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one mate at the same time”. It is legal in South Africa under certain circumstances. Many African traditions allow polygamy as it is normal for a man to have more than one wife.

Before 1998

According to section 11(3) of the Repeal of the Black Administration Act (BAA) and the Natal Code of Zulu Law of 1985, women in customary marriages were seen as less than their husbands and held a lower status. They were regarded as a minor. This act meant that women in these marriages could not own property and acquire credit.

There were attempts to fix this. Section 11A was implemented. It removed the property and credit issue but did not change their legal status. Changes were then made to consider women over the age of 21 as legal majorities. This however did not work because Section 27(3) of the Natal Code (1985) still stated that a husband had control of his wife or wives.

Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120 of 1998 (RCMA) made these unions legal including polygamous marriages. This law was instated in order to improve a womans position in a customary marriage. It was here that it was first stated that a woman shall be equal to her husband.

Our law now

South African law states that in order for a polygamous marriage to be legal both partners need to be over the age of 18, they must consent to the union under customary law, that law must be followed, negotiated and celebrated. This was instated in Act No. 120 of 1998.

A customary marriage must be registered. This is very important especially with polygamous marriages. If you wed a man in a traditional ceremony, you may consider yourselves as married. If your husband weds again and that marriage is registered at Home Affairs, the registered marriage parties are entitled to everything because it’s on record.

If the marriage is not registered and the husband dies there is a chance that she will be left with nothing. The husband’s family can claim everything and explain that the wife or wives will not get anything because there is no legal obligation.

It’s a man’s world

South Africa does not recognise polyandry which is the practice of a woman having more than one husband. This is because polygamy is legal under certain circumstance in South Africa. The circumstances being practices of various cultures and religions in South Africa. Unfortunately there are no religions or cultures that recognise a woman having multiple husbands. So if there’s no recognition it doesn’t fall under ‘certain circumstances’, therefore only men are legally allowed to be polygamists in South Africa.

Before you start calculating what 50 times 66 000 is, those who requested a refund were reimbursed. The wedding was reported to be 10 minutes long and included a fight that seemed a bit too staged to be true.

i’m probably gonna be posting wedding photos longer than we’re married for but i felt like i had to start with these- these photos were taken minutes after someone literally threw an entire drink at us at the fucking altar. obviously, like everything happening at this wedding- that wasn’t apart of my plan (or any ideal for a regular wedding). but somehow amidst all of the chaos and cameras, we grabbed eachother’s faces and the second we both locked eyes and smiled… it made it all better. everything was okay. if not, better. it kinda set the tone for everything we’ll go through together. probably not easy, or conventional, but throughout all of the chaos, if we can just grab eachother, the world stops spinning for a second. i’m never really prepared for what might be thrown at us but i’m happy i get to deal with it with my best friend by my side. it’s a beautiful thing that every single time someone wants to take the power away from us and put us down, we are able to come together and let positivity & love help us power through that. i wouldn’t have wanted to marry you in any other unconventional fucked up way, Jake. I love you. 7.28.19. ❤️ (apologies in advance for the amount of pictures i’ll post over the next week)
