The story of John Lennon and Yoko Ono has captured the attention of many over time. Their relationship was hotly debated since they began their courtship while The Beatles star was still wed to another woman. Nevertheless, their marriage is an enduring image of 20th-century popular culture. We take a look back at their nuptials.

Most Beatles fans know a bit about the story of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s wedding. After all, Lennon sang of it in his song “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, which he recorded with fellow Beatle, Paul McCartney, on April 14, 1969.

    The lyrics go like this:

“Finally made the plane into Paris
    Honeymooning down by the Seine
    Peter Brown called to say
    You can make it OK
You can get married in Gibraltar near Spain”

Ono met Lennon in November 1966, as she prepared to open her art exhibit called Unfinished Paintings and Objects, which was held at the Indica Gallery, in the basement of the Indica Bookshop in London. According to Lennon, they fell in love on that day.

After their initial meeting, they kept in touch for months, and eventually became an inseparable couple and a force to be reckoned with. However, when Lennon and Ono began their courtship, the singer was still married to his first wife, Cynthia Lennon. Cynthia filed for divorce in August 1968, and by March 20, 1969 Lennon would be remarried to Ono.

Initially, the pair wanted to marry in the most romantic way they could think of – on a train to Paris.

“We wanted to get married on a cross-channel ferry. That was the romantic part,” Lennon said in The Beatles’ Anthology documentary. “We went to Southampton and then we couldn’t get on because she wasn’t English, and she couldn’t get the day visa to go across. They said, ‘Anyway, you can’t get married. The captain’s not allowed to do it any more.'”

After that plan failed, they tried many others, and eventually settled on Gibraltar, a location suggested by their friend Peter Brown.

“We chose Gibraltar because it is quiet, British and friendly. We tried everywhere else first. I set out to get married on the car ferry and we would have arrived in France married, but they wouldn’t do it. We were no more successful with cruise ships. We tried embassies, but three weeks’ residence in Germany or two weeks’ in France were required,” Lennon once explained.

The pair chartered a plane to Gibraltar and married on March 20, 1969 (about a week after bandmate Paul McCartney wedded Linda Eastman), in a 10-minute ceremony at the British Consulate Office.

The bride wore a white, tiered miniskirt and top, small floppy hat, knee-high socks, plimsolls, and round, black sunglasses, and the groom donned a white high-neck top, a blazer, and jacket.

After the wedding, came the honeymoon, which has gone down in history as one of the most famous honeymoons of all time.

For their honeymoon, the pair planned a “bed-in” for peace for the week of March 25 – 31, at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. The event was covered by a variety of international media outlets.

“We decided that if we were going to do anything like get married that we would dedicate it to peace,” Lennon told Rolling Stone in 1971. “And during that period, because we are what we are, it evolved that somehow we ended up being responsible to produce peace.”

“I was very aware that we were ruining each other’s careers and I was hated and John was hated because of me. We did everything together and we did everything publicly together. The Bed-In was our work for peace but we weren’t liked for it,” Ono shared with The Telegraph.

Seven months after their wedding, the pair released their album titled “Wedding Album”, and it was quite odd. The first side, called “John and Yoko” features a 22-minute long recording in which they pair say each others names, against the backtrack of a beating heart. They purr, wail, and coo, saying each others names in silly ways.

One of the most iconic brides in history has to be Bianca Jagger. The Nicaraguan-born actress and activist stunned crowds in a unique and incredibly chic bridal suit when she married rocker, Mick Jagger. Her wedding look still inspires brides today.

The unique pair tied the knot during a shotgun wedding on May 12, 1971, in St. Tropez. While their marriage ended a few years later, it remains one of the most stylish celebrity weddings to date. We take a look at their big day.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger met Bianca Perez-Mora Macias at an after party in Paris in late 1970. At the time, she was studying political science at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. The Rolling Stones were in Paris after reportedly fleeing England to escape tax debt. The pair immediately hit it off, so much so that they found out they were expecting a child together within a few months of dating.

Only one day before their wedding, the unpredictable couple informed their guests of their plans to marry. Their wedding had a 75-person guest list and featured household names like Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Brigitte Bardot and Keith Richards to name a few.

There were quite a few uninvited guests too, as hundreds of paparazzi descended on their day to capture the festivities. In fact, the commotion was so bad that the Jagger’s arrived at their ceremony an hour-and-a-half late to try to avoid the crowds.

When they did arrive, they looked absolutely amazing. Mick wore an olive green suit with a floral shirt and coloured sneakers, and Bianca stunned in an impeccably tailored, white Yves Saint Laurent smoking jacket with nothing underneath. She paired it with a matching calf-length skirt and large veiled sun hat. This outfit started the courthouse wedding chic trend.

The pair tied the knot during a civil ceremony at the town hall, then had a traditional Roman Catholic ceremony at St. Anne’s chapel, with the soundtrack of Love Story playing in the background.

After their ceremony, they made their way to their 200-person reception held at Café des Arts where the party truly began. Guests enjoyed impromptu jam sessions and partied till the early hours of the morning.

The Jagger’s had a 10-day yacht honeymoon traveling Corsica and Sardinia. Their daughter Jade was born a few months later in October 1971.

Unfortunately, the marriage did not last. The couple divorced in 1979 following Mick’s affair with American supermodel Jerry Hall. Bianca famously told the New York Times in 1986 that My marriage was over on the wedding day.”

Today, Bianca is a dedicated human rights advocate. She serves as a Council of Europe goodwill ambassador, is the founder and chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, member of the Executive Director’s Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA, and a trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust.
Mick is one of the most influential frontmen in rock n roll history, with a career that has spanned five decades. He has eight children with five women.

Even those who seem most perfect are still able to make mistakes. Similarly, while celebrity weddings always seem to go off without a hitch, there are often unexpected disasters and surprises.

Celebrities are not immune to mishaps. Bad weather doesn’t avoid the rich and famous, and neither does nerves.

If you’re wondering how this could be possible, we promise it is. We have proof. Here are some celebrity wedding disasters, to show you that these things happen!

    Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson

At their 2014 wedding, nerves ran high. Simpson was so overwhelmed with the nerves, that she said the wrong name during their wedding ceremony! Instead of pledging her everlasting love to love to her husband, she said her own name.  The singer merely brushed it off, laughed at her mistake, and began again.

    Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie

Have you ever had the stress-induced dream where your teeth fall out? Well, Hilary Duff experienced something similar just hours before her 2010 wedding to Mike Comrie.

On the morning of the wedding, Duff ate a bagel. A normal thing to do. The next thing she knew, her tooth fell out!

“I started laughing at myself and then I really burst into tears,” Duff said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. As luck would have it, Duff’s wedding planner managed to get an emergency appointment with a dentist.

    Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

The Gossip Girl actress experienced something no bride ever wants to, at her 2012 wedding to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds. Lively’s gown caught on fire!

Speaking to Vogue, Lively said, “Florence Welch was singing at the reception, and they brought out these sparklers, and I’m watching her sing, I look down and my wedding dress has a big burn mark from one of the sparklers. Right on the front! And it was just so heartbreaking to me.”

According to Martha Stewart Weddings, Reynolds made the unfortunate turn of events into something sweet for Lively, when he said “Isn’t that beautiful? You’ll always remember that moment with Florence singing and the sparklers. You have that forever, right there, preserved.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.

At their 2002 wedding in Mexico, the popular 90s couple were hit with a real disaster. A hurricane (Hurricane Hernan) forced the couple to rethink their outdoor wedding, and as their guests left Mexico after the wedding, an earthquake hit too!

The talent manager who represented the pair at the time told People that it’s a great way to start their lives together. “All of those bigger-than-life natural events can only bode well for the marriage,” he said.

    Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild

Another mishap where the wedding gown is the casualty. At their 2015 wedding, the train of Hilton’s wedding gown got stuck under the wheels of a car.

Reggae musician Shaggy and his wife, Rebecca Packer Burrell, celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 12. To commemorate the occasion, the singer shared a loving message on Instagram.

Alongside a photo of himself and his wife with their children, all dressed in white, Shaggy wrote: “Happy Anniversary to my wife and best friend’ love of my life, partner in crime and all-around great gal’ @rebeccapackerburrell … what a ride!!! Hold on cus it gets better!”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CCjazJ-H983/?utm_source=ig_embed

The pair got to know each other toward the end of the 1990s, after Rebecca, an art director, worked on a few of Shaggy’s music videos. They have been a couple since the early 2000s. They spent 16 years together, before getting married in 2014.

Not much is known about their wedding, as they kept it tightly under wraps. However, it is reported that they married under almond trees at Goldeneye in Oracabessa, Jamaica, on July 12, 2014.

Over the years, Shaggy has said many sweet things about his wife.

In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Shaggy described their relationship. “We have had our fair share of arguments, but I think the best way to put it is that we are two stones, and the edges are rough, and they beat on each other until eventually, they are smooth. That’s the best way I can say it. She constantly impresses me as we go along, and that keeps my interest there. And our love is the basic thing that keeps us together” he said.

The couple share three daughters together, and the singer also has two sons from a previous relationship.

Survivor is a game of trickery, deception, and lies. As their slogan says, competitors have to “outwit, outlast, outplay” each other. Participants join the competition in the hopes of becoming the sole survivor and winning a million dollars, but some have come out of the game having won love.

Castaways, as the game calls its participants, are sent to an island to partake in various challenges while they fend for themselves in the wild. Each episode, a player gets voted off the island by other tribe members.

One might think this is not a situation that is friendly to a blooming love since everybody is fighting to be the last one standing through manipulating and outwitting their competitors. However, love has blossomed several times on the popular show.

Here are some of the couples who fell in love in the jungle:

    Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich

Probably the most well-known survivor couple, Rob Mariano (better known as Boston Rob) and Amber Brkich met in 2003 on Survivor: All-Stars. Their love was apparent on the show, and only a year later, in 2004, they got engaged. In 2005 the pair married and have been together ever since. They now have 4 daughters together. Their love for each other, and for Survivor, was so strong that they both returned for another season of Survivor (season 40).

    Rachel Foulger and Tyson Apostol

The pair met on Survivor: Blood vs. Water, which Apostol actually won, meaning he outwitted and outlasted his future wife. The couple tied the knot in 2015 and now have two daughters together.

    Erik Huffman and Jaime Dugan-Huffman

These two competed on Survivor: China. They met on the show in 2007, and two years later were married. They now share a son together.

Joe Anglim and Sierra Dawn Thomas

Meeting in 2014 on Survivor: Worlds Apart, it wasn’t love at first sight for this couple. It was only a few years later that they started dating, and announced their engagement on April 9, 2019. They tied the knot in the same year.

    Whitney Duncan and Keith Tollefson

It was an instant love connection for Whitney and Keith, who met on Survivor: South Pacific in 2011. After their Survivor adventure, the pair took on The Amazing Race, another reality game show, and tied the knot in 2014.

While these couples didn’t last, they have become iconic pairings in celebrity history. Here are a few of our favourite celebrity couples from the early 2000s that have since gone their separate ways.

According to her, the friendship grew stronger and stronger, but they were never single at the same time.

“Then a couple of years ago we were both single, and he was like, ‘why don’t we give it a shot?’ I was like, ‘no that’s weird’. ‘He was like no one knows you like me, and no one knows me like you,” she said.

Thereafter, they were together for a year, however, it was not official.

“So for a year we were together but weren’t official. Then he took me on holiday and asked me to be his girlfriend. And I was like, I really like you,” she said.

Serena Williams is a force to be reckoned with. The iconic tennis player has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era. She also formally held the Women’s Tennis Association title for World number 1 female tennis player on eight separate occasions between 2002 and 2017.

Williams continues to be wildly successful in her tennis career. She has said though, that her proudest achievements were in the last few years after welcoming daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. to the world with husband Alexis Ohanian. We take a look at this couple’s journey of love.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/ByfYLyxHAuh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Williams and Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, met by chance in May 2015 while in Rome. Williams was dining with friends at the Cavalieri Hotel when Ohanian sat down at the table next to the group.

“This big guy comes and he just plops down at the table next to us, and I’m like, ‘Huh! All these tables and he’s sitting here?'” she told Vanity Fair.

To encourage him to move, William’s group told him that there was a rat at the table. Ohanian didn’t fall for the story, so Williams invited him to join their table. He also watched her play at the Italian Open that same day.

Later that same month, Williams invited Ohanian to watch her play in the French Open after she performed poorly at the Italian Open. He flew to Paris to watch her, and they spent six hours together prior to the tournament walking around the city and falling in love. The pair went Instagram official over a year later in November 2016.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BNYH1Y9gpiP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

In an interview, Williams explained why she fell for Ohanian.

“Alexis doesn’t dim my light. He doesn’t try to dim my light. He puts me in the light, even if I don’t want to be. He pushes me to further points I never thought about,” she said. “It always was something that I could see in some relationships – my light would be dimmer. Now I feel like I can shine really bright and still do everything that I want to do.”

The pair were engaged in December 2016 at the very same table at the Roman hotel where they first met. Soon after the proposal, Williams posted a poem to Reddit announcing their engagement.

“I came home/A little late/Someone had a bag packed for me/And a carriage awaited/Destination: Rome/To escort me to my very own “charming”/Back to where our stars first collided/And now it was full circle/At the same table we first met by chance/This time he made it not by chance/But by choice/Down on one knee/He said 4 words/And/r/isaidyes,” she wrote.

A month after their engagement, they found out they were expecting their first child. They welcomed daughter Alexis Olympia in September 2017. She was named after her father and her initials (AO) also represent the Australian Open, which Williams won in 2017 while pregnant.

The pair tied the knot two months later on November 16 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Their extravagant wedding was ‘Beauty and the Beast’ themed, and featured A-listers like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian, Kelly Rowland, Ciara, and of course, sister Venus Williams.

For their nuptials, Williams stunned in a beautiful ballgown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, the same designer who created Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. She later changed into two different Vera Wang dresses for the reception.

Two and half years later, the couple are still going strong. Daughter Olympia has become a social media star in her own right as she has her own Instagram account (run by her parents, of course).

In January 2020, Williams won the ASB classic, her first singles title since 2017. Ohanian is a large proponent for paternal leave and runs a podcast called ‘Business Dad’ where he interviews fellow celebrity fathers.

The wedding of the King of rock ‘n roll, Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley has gone down in history for its unusual nature. We take a look at this infamous couple’s walk down the aisle.

Presley met his future wife, Priscilla Ann Beaulieu in 1959 when she was only 14 years old and he was 24. At the time, Elvis was serving in the army and Priscilla’s family lived on the base as her father was an Air Force Captain.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B3sRDTlh1Em/

After Elvis returned to his estate in Memphis, the pair kept in touch until Priscilla’s parents allowed her to move there when she was 17. According to Country Living, her parents only allowed it on the condition that they would eventually get married.

The pair became engaged in 1966 when Elvis proposed to Priscilla with a three and a half carat diamond ring, with 20 smaller diamonds surrounding it. It is rumoured that, at the time, Elvis did not want to get married. Rather, he went through with it as he felt pressure from Prescilla’s father to do so.

This wedding has gone down in history as one of the most-talked-about ceremonies in the 20th century.

The wedding was organised by Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s manager. He gathered everyone to Palm Springs for the big day. “Just after midnight on May 1, [1967],” wrote Elvis’s school friend George Klein in a book, “the wedding party snuck out the back door of Elvis’s Palm Springs home, climbed over the backyard wall, and got into a car to head to the airport. Elvis had been loaned Frank Sinatra’s private jet for the occasion.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BoMpiKjlEaX/?utm_source=ig_embed

Another plane brought the guests, and they arrived at the Aladdin Hotel where they exited through the back to ensure they weren’t seen.

Elvis and Priscilla made it official early in the morning after they were given their marriage license at the Las Vegas Courthouse.  A supreme court judge married the pair in a suite at the Aladdin, and the room was filled with flower petals and candles. There were only 14 people present.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BjZSZ0JHpMk/

“My wedding was very unusual,” Priscilla once said. “It was the people closest to us, and private, and that’s how we wanted it. We didn’t want a fan club. We didn’t want a circus.”

Priscilla’s sister was the maid of honour, and two members of Elvis’s entourage, Marty Lacker and Joe Esposito,  stood as the co-best men.

After their intimate wedding, they held a press conference and then threw a breakfast buffet for 100 guests. They served roast suckling pig, oysters Rockefeller, lobster, Champagne, and Southern fried chicken.

They had a six-tier sponge cake, with apricot marmalade filling and liqueur-flavoured cream for dessert.

In 1968, the couple welcomed their first and only child together, Lisa-Marie. Their marriage struggled after both had affairs, and Elvis’s touring took him away from home for extended periods of time. They separated in 1972 and formalised their divorce in 1973 after six years of marriage
