A divorce doesn’t seem like it would be a joyful moment. For those that go down this route, it brings an end to a relationship that was meant to last forever. For one mega-celebrity, however, her divorce appeared to be a thrilling moment.

Although it is strange to remember, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were once married. The pair met on the set of Days of Thunder and tied the knot in 1990, when Kidman was only 23 years old. They even share two adopted children: Isabella Jane and Connor Anthony.

In 2001, they officially split. Cruise was the one to file, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’, which left Kidman shocked. Speaking to People, she said, “Our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system. That was a great relationship. I think it ran its course. I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me.”

While we don’t know the reasons for the split, we do have these iconic images of Kidman leaving her attorney’s office after finalising the divorce. The photo has since become somewhat of a meme in pop culture, with many aspiring to the level of joy Kidman appeared to be experiencing in this moment.

While both have been incredibly tight-lipped about their breakup, Kidman has made some comments that shed a bit of life on this relationship of yesteryear.

According to the famed actress, she felt like she lived in Cruise’s shadow for the majority of their marriage as he was the bigger star at the time. This caused her to doubt herself.

“I became famous very young. I became very famous because I was the wife of somebody. I felt I became a star only by association. I didn’t think (my early movies) were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background,” she told US Weekly.

“I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, I’m here to support him. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.”

In an essay for New York Magazine, Kidman also said her marriage helped her survive in the industry.

“I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me – it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. When I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.”

She also revealed that she suffered two miscarriages during the marriage.

Going Clear, an expose on the Church of Scientology, claims that the church was also a big factor in their split. According to the film, the Church of Scientology intimidated Cruise to divorce Kidman because her father is a psychologist, a practice the church does not believe in. She also reportedly tried to distance Cruise from the religion and was semi-successful until they intervened, claims the film.

Kidman has said that she will never truly speak on why they divorced out of respect for Cruise.

“I don’t want to take away from 11 years with that man that were really important. Really, for our kids — they were amidst a lot of love. It wasn’t bad. And now we’re amidst a more evolved love. I want to honour that marriage for what it was, and there is nothing I would go into about that. I have never discussed the intricacies of it and I never will,” she told People.

Since then, Kidman has found love again with country singer Keith Urban. They married in 2006 and they share two children together: Sunday Rose born naturally in 2008, and Faith Margaret born in 2011 via surrogate.

Her career rose to new heights following the split. She won a Golden Globe for her role in Moulin Rouge in 2002, and an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for her starring role in Hours in 2003. Her most recent hit Big Little Lies is much-loved by critics, and she’s won many awards for it.

Cruise went on to marry actress Katie Holmes in 2006, and they share daughter Suri who was born the same year. They divorced in 2012.

Singers Leona Lewis and Dennis Jauch are celebrating a special occasion. The couple have officially been married a year, and both took to Instagram to write sweet messages of devotion to one another.

“Having you by my side has been the greatest gift. Our first trip around the sun together as husband and wife and what a year it’s been ? We don’t do things by halves, all or nothing baby ? here’s to many more adventures together,” wrote the songstress on Instagram.

Lewis and Jauch married on July 27, 2019 at the  stunning 16th century Il Palagio estate in Tuscany, Italy. The bride wore a beautiful lace and tulle gown by Israeli designer Mira Zwillinger for the ceremony, and changed into a pink embellished tulle gown by Inbal Dror for the reception.

Their plans had to change when a massive electrical storm hit. The ceremony was moved from outdoors in the vineywards to the chapel at the last minute.

Birthdays are a special day for many people. We get to feel our best, be spoiled, and we’re celebrated just for being born. Adding a proposal to a day as special as this makes it all the more amazing. Metro FM show host Lerato Kganyago had this fairytale experience last week.

Following social distancing rules, Kganyago is currently hosting her Metro FM show from her bedroom. On Wednesday, July 22 she stuck to her routine and got on with her work. But little did she know, a surprise awaited her after.

Once she left her room, she found her home covered in balloons and flowers. As she made her way down the staircase, words describing her covered them. “Hard worker, self-motivated, kind, joyful, strong, lovable, content, generous, intelligent, nurturer, blessed, compassionate, loving, Lerato”, were written on the steps.

With music playing in the background, she eventually found “Will you marry me again?” written in gold on the floor.

Kganyago was completely taken by surprise. “While I was in my bedroom doing my radio show!!! This was happening downstairs and I had NO CLUE!” she wrote on Instagram.

In May, Kganyago announced that she had split from her partner Thami Ndala, after they had been married for two months. In a statement, she wrote, “It is with sadness that we announce that Thami and I have decided to go our separate ways. We have come to realise that our different priorities and workloads have not afforded us the time to invest in our relationship. We will continue to care deeply for each other, and look forward to growing our friendship. We have nothing more to say on this subject and hope that our privacy will be respected during this difficult time.”

Shortly thereafter, there was speculation that they had gotten back together.

Now, it seems clear that the pair have reunited and are planning another trip down the aisle since the words read “will you marry me again” appeared in the video, indicating they had been married before.

Kganyago prefers to keep her private life to herself and out of the spotlight, and she made it clear in May that she was frustrated with all the speculation about her private life. She has not tagged or mentioned her groom to be in her Instagram posts recently either.

Princess Beatrice of York shocked the world when she married beau Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in secret this past weekend. The pair were forced to cancel their big day scheduled for May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and instead had an intimate celebration with 20 guests.

For her big day, Princess Beatrice honoured her grandmother, her Majesty the Queen in two ways. She customised her grandmother’s vintage Norman Hartnell dress to use as her wedding gown and she wore her grandmother’s tiara, known as the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara.

This kokoshnik-style tiara is special for the Royal family as its the very one Queen Elizabeth wore on her own wedding day to Prince Philip back in 1947. It was originally made for Queen Mary in 1919 by British jewelers Garrard and Co., and was fashioned from a diamond necklace gifted to Queen Mary on her wedding day by Queen Victoria in 1893.

A then-princess Elizabeth became the next royal to wear the tiara when she chose it as her ‘something borrowed’ for her big day in 1947. As she was getting ready for her ceremony, the diamond tiara snapped. It was rushed to the court jeweler, who was able to repair it an time for the ceremony.

Princess Anne was the next royal to don the tiara on her big day when she married Mark Phillips in 1973. Princess Beatrice is the latest royal to wear the tiara, honouring her grandmother in the process.

South Africans love their rugby and beam with pride over the Springboks. You know a player is legendary and much-loved when he even has a nickname.

Tendai Matawarira, known as ‘The Beast’ has been married to Kuziva Makore for a decade this year. Their love story is one of long-distance romance and destiny. The sports star is originally from Zimbabwe, where his mother saw Kuziva singing in a church choir in 2009. She must have struck a chord, because his mother gave Kuziva her son’s number, according to iHarare.

“My mother saw something in Ku that was perfect,” Mtawarira said to News24.

“He’s the sort of man I dreamt about,” Makore, a Psychology student and nail technician, added.

They began talking over the phone but didn’t meet for three months, as Mtawarira was travelling on a rugby tour. They fell in love nonetheless, constantly texting and calling.

Their wedding was a traditionally arranged one and the two tied the knot in Durban, South Africa in 2010. It turns out mother does know best!

The rugby player is famous for being ruthless on the field. He might be tough on the outside, but clearly has a soft spot on the inside.

“Happy 9th Year Anniversary my Queen. Doing life with you is such a privilege and SOOOO much fun. Thank you for being the most caring, loving wife and mother I could have ever hoped for. I Love U more than life itself Booblan aka Best friend. Super excited for what God has planned for our family and our future,” he wrote on Instagram for their ninth anniversary.

Spanish superstars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have been married for 10 years. The actors recently flew to the Algarve in Portugal to celebrate this milestone achievement.

Bardem and Cruz are a notoriously private couple. They met in 1992 on the set of Jamón Jamón, but didn’t begin dating until 2007 when they reunited on the set of Vicky Christina Barcelona.

They managed to keep their relationship under wraps for years, making their first red carpet appearance together in 2010. In this same year, the pair secretely tied the knot in an intimate, family-only wedding in the Bahamas.

Over the course of their relationship, they have starred together in many films.

Both Bardem and Cruz agree that keeping their relationship out of the public eye is the healthiest for their marriage. “Penélope and I, we have to protect the ‘us,’” Javier told Vulture Magazine.

The couple have two children together: nine-year-old Leo Encinas Cruz and seven-year-old Luna Encinas Cruz.

Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya is a South African icon and hero. She has had her fair share of ups and downs throughout her career, but is lucky to have the love of wife Violet Raseboya to keep her going. Here’s how this golden couple met and fell in love.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B29C_WOH-Dw/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Semenya and Raseboya, a fellow sprinter, met in 2007 at a restroom when Caster was only 15 years old. They didn’t have the greatest introduction.

“We met in a restroom in 2007. She was a runner and was being escorted by doping officials. She thought I was a boy and said: ‘What is a boy doing in here?” Semenya told BET. In response, she told Raseboya, “I’m not a boy. You think I’m lost? You think I can just walk in here?”

The pair were friends for a while, until Caster confessed her feelings to Violet.

“We were in denial. She had a past. She had a boyfriend. [Violet] was trying to deny being in love with a woman.”

The couple eventually got together despite these difficulties, but were on and off for years until deciding in 2015 that they wanted to take things seriously. They had a traditional wedding ceremony in 2015 and a lavish white wedding in December 2017 in Pretoria.

Fast forward thirteen years, and the pair are as close as ever.

“She is someone I can rely on. Through thick and thin,” Semenya said of her wife.

Their long-distance relationship makes things tough as times, but it’s all worth it.

“She means everything to me. She means the world and she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, because she supports me in everything I do. She’s the one who encouraged me to go to school, to train hard, to look up to my future,” she told Times Live. “It is life, man. There are some things you cannot explain. But obviously if you’ve had deep feelings for someone you’ll understand what I’m saying.”

“Working within government guidelines, the service was in keeping with the unique circumstances while enabling them to celebrate their wedding with their closest family,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “No hymns were sung, but a selection of music was played. The National Anthem was played but not sung.”

For her big day, the Princess wore a stunning vintage dress by Norman Hartnell and accessorised with the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, both belonging to Her Majesty the Queen. The tiara was worn by Queen Elizabeth on her wedding day in 1947.

She carried a bouquet of trailing jasmine, pale pink and cream sweet peas, royal porcelain ivory spray roses, pink o’hara garden roses, pink wax flower and baby pink astible. Of course, she had a sprig of myrtle in it as well to continue royal tradition.

The unfortunate passing of Kelly Preston due to breast cancer has brought much sadness to the world. Loving thoughts and prayers have been sent to her husband, award-winning actor John Travolta, who also lost a previous love to the same illness.

The story of Travolta and Preston is one of Hollywood’s most legendary. The pair were married for almost 29 years, and through it all, they shared the best and worst with us.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B8U9a3kH7wc/

They first met at a screen test for a comedy movie called The Experts (1989), which they both starred in. Travolta was immediately taken with the beauty and grace of Preston, but for her it was less instant.

At the time, Preston was married to actor Kevin Gage. In an interview with Andy Cohen in 2018, the host asked Preston whether it was love at first sight for her and Travolta. “Kinda,” she replied.

“Well I was not that happily married, let’s put it that way,” Preston said. “I was really with the wrong person.

At their first meeting, the famed couple had to dance together. As we all know from his roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta has moves, and they must have helped him get the girl of his dreams, as Preston later admitted that the dance is what started it all.

On the day, a mutual friend told Travolta, “You’re going to meet this girl and you’re going to fall in love with her, and you’re going to want to get married.” How serendipitous!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bkkyf0KHQUV/

Preston divorced Gage, and eventually began dating Travolta. Their love blossomed and in 1990 on New Year’s Eve in Switzerland, Travolta proposed with a 6-carat diamond ring.

The next year they eloped to Paris and got married on September 5, 1991. Kelly admitted that the wedding planning at home became too much for her to handle. “The wedding got so big and so crazy. I thought once the florist’s assistant got an assistant, I was done,” she said in a 2018 interview.

The pair, who are both Scientologists, had a Scientology minister perform their nuptials.

Soon after, they made their way back to Florida, for another wedding to make it legal after they found out that their Paris nuptials would not be accepted by US law.

On April 13, 1992, their first child, Jett, was born. Family life was very important to them, and in 2000 they welcomed their second child, Ella.

They tragically lost their firstborn when he was 16 (in 2009) after he suffered from Kawasaki Syndrome as a child and had a history of seizures. To this day, Jett’s birthday is still celebrated.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B-8epmcpDFL/

A year later, the family welcomed another member, Benjamin. It was surprising to everyone, as Kelly was already 48 at the time and she had admitted that they tried for another child for years without success.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I was floored,” Kelly told People Magazine. “I’d snuck out of bed and then came back and woke Johnny up in bed. We both started crying. It was wonderful.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B-5xsiaJ6ew/

Despite the loss and tough times, the two stuck together. Preston told People Magazine that, just like at their first meeting, they often danced together, and they always looked for moments to have fun together.

“A relationship doesn’t just happen,” she said. “You have to work at it. You’ve got to keep it fun and that’s what we do.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BizVJDilqrd/

In 2018, tragedy struck the family again, when Preston was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite being public about their losses in the past, the family decided they would not publicise her illness.

On July 12, 2020 Travolta made the heartbreaking announcement that his beloved wife had passed on.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.  My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side. Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered. I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while.  But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal. All my love, JT,” he wrote.

Their love lasted through years of Hollywood life, though trauma and sadness, and always came out stronger. Our condolences to her loved ones.
