Traditionally in a heterosexual marriage a woman wears a dress while the groom wears a suit, the expansion of marriage rights across the world and de-gendering of clothing has led to a surge in suits for all genders in the wedding party.
A suit can look smart, well-put together and well-fitting if you follow very simple rules, otherwise it can easily become a bit of a mess.
Here are our tips for making sure you look smart on your big day.
Do not wait until the last minute
Although it might not be as intricate as a traditional wedding gown, finding exactly what you want in a suit and getting it fitted is unlikely to be a quick affair.
You’ll have a lot of other things to do in the run up to the wedding so you don’t want this to be a rush.
Do not avoid the tailor
A tailored suit can with the perfect fit is incredibly important. If you’re getting a suit made then this will be part of the process. Even if you decide to buy off the rack, take it to a tailor. There is always something that can be tweaked.
Do not go overboard on accessories
Since suits are simple ensembles, personalising them is tricky to get right. A big way to make your suit reflect your personality is through accessories but be careful not to go overboard and include all of them. Be judicious, a fun pair of socks is a good idea but having flashy suspenders, socks and a pocket square could make you look more clown and less classy.
Choose the right shoes
The wrong shoe can throw off the whole outfit. Make sure the colour works, they are comfortable and speak to the style you’re going for rather than just picking out the most “formal” option you can find.
If you’re going to wear heels with your suit, consider this when getting your pants leg tailored.
Getting creative
If you have a look around there are beautiful colourful, patterned suits out there for the brave and bold. While these can work for the right people, make sure it is something you want and are comfortable with. Wedding photos will be around forever, so ensure that even an exciting suit reflects you and your personality and is not just something you chose on a whim.
Wedding cakes are a key tradition in most cultures and they can easily rack up quite a heavy cost. This doesn’t have to be the case if you’re clear about what you want and follow these simple tips to help you save on this part of your big day.
Consider a display cake
A big expense when it comes to cake is getting the amount you need out of a beautifully designed, intricate cake. If you want a cake that can feed all your guests, rather have a smaller, beautiful display cake for cutting and have a simple sheet cake in the kitchen which can be cut up and brought out.
Keep it simple
This might be the most obvious suggestion, but the more complicated the cake the more expensive it is likely to be. Choosing a cake that will take less time to make means you will be charged less by your baker. Consider what you want in terms of colour, icing and tiers and then make this combination as simple as possible.
Reconsider flowers
Sugar flowers should definitely be reconsidered and replaced by fresh flowers or painted flowers on the cake itself. Sugar flowers are intricate and require a lot of work which adds to the cost.
Consider the cake a party favour
Instead of having the cake and party favours combine these two parts of the event. Cut the cake right at the end, before everyone begins to leave and offer them slices in takeaway boxes as they go.
Serve smaller slices
Let’s be honest, most people don’t even eat their entire piece of wedding cake. So save by having a smaller cake with smaller slices. If you’re worried this won’t be enough for guests, combine the smaller piece of cake with cheaper confectionaries like strawberries or chocolates.
User your caterer
Often couples choose a separate baker for their cake but this can add to the cost. If you find out if your caterer would be willing to do the cake as well you can often negotiate a better price.
Consider something other than cake
Cake is the traditional option, but why not offer guests a something different which can also save you some money. Offering cupcakes or cake pops are great alternatives and are likely to be eaten because of their smaller size.
Wedding episodes of any TV series are often the most-watched episode. While the wedding is great, the proposal episodes are usually the most exciting because you’ve been waiting for them for multiple seasons. Here are some of the best wedding proposals we’ve seen on our screens.
Monica and Chandler (Friends)
This is a big one. Audiences had been waiting for this couple to get married. Monic’s sweet proposal by candlelight is perfectly rounded out by her best friend and boyfriend finishing her declaration of love when she gets a bit too emotional.
“You make me happier than I ever thought I could be and if you let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way,” he said.
David and Patrick (Schitt’s Creek)
David might be extra and Patrick less so but they make the perfectly couple despite the differences. Their proposal setting is not one you’d expect David to be caught dead in and that is what makes it so sweet. He’s out of his comfort zone after Patrick hurts himself and even apologises for being annoyed about the trip, and then Patrick proposes.
“And now here he is, the love of my life, standing in front of me. And this just felt like the perfect place to ask you to marry me,” said Patrick.
Cece and Schmidt (New Girl)
The couple who always seemed like they were missing each other finally got engaged after Cece returns and Schmidt realises she is in love with him. He doesn’t let a single moment pass before proposing to her with the whole loft watching. Although not filled with the usual romantic settings, this proposal is great because it calls back to an earlier episode where Schmidt has to put $5 in the “douchebag jar” for saying to Cece “girl, Imma marry you.”
Nathan and Haley (One Tree Hill)
Nathan and Haley were the couple on One Tree Hill. In retrospect their marriage was insane because they were so young and still in High School both times they did it, it was great to finally get a proposal since we didn’t see the first one. To reaffirm their relationship after all the ups and downs, Nathan re-asks Haley and she responds with their iconic saying “Always and Forever.”
“Even if I could I wouldn’t take back all the bad stuff that happened between us. Because it brought us here to this moment, this river. Marry me, Haley? Marry me again in front of all our friends and our family?”
Ben and Leslie (Parks and Recreation)
Leslie is a control freak and this even extends to the surprise proposal she gets from Ben. As he goes down on one knee in their new house, Leslie asks him to wait so she can “take in the moment”. It’s classic Leslie and the audience loves it but eventually, you just want to scream “let him do it already”.
“I’m thinking about my future. I am deeply, ridiculously in love with you. Above everything else I just — I want to be with you forever. So Leslie Knope will you —” said Ben.
Valencia and Beth (Crazy ex-girlfriend)
Although this proposal might not be as well-known as some of the others, it is one of the sweetest. Valencia expects a traditional, grandiose proposal from her girlfriend Beth but then realises those kinds of gestures aren’t necessary.
Valencia realises unlike in the heteronormative standard, she can also propose rather than waiting for it to happen to her. The moment when she does is so intimate as the two are in their tiny apartment in New York.
Piper and Alex (Orange is the new black)
If there was ever a more complicated couple on TV it would be astounding. From lovers to cellmates, these two have been through it all including massive betrayals and heartbreak. When Piper proposes to Alex most would have seen it coming, but the engagement and wedding behind bars is quintessentially their story.
“You have taught me that love hurts. You have taught me that life…it hurts. And I want to be there for you. I want us to be there for each other so that maybe it hurts a little less” said Piper.
Jim and Pam (The Office)
Alongside Monica and Chandler, this is the proposal much of the world was waiting for. This office romance turned full-on marriage switched the office fling from something sordid to romantic.
Much like the series setting itself is mundane and boring, Pam and Jim’s proposal takes place in an equally dull spot – the petrol station shop and it’s perfect. The spot is halfway between their lives in two neighbouring towns and Pam is perfectly surprised when he gets down on one knee.
“I just couldn’t wait. Pam, will you marry me?” said Jim.
Meredith and Derek (Grey’s Anatomy)
While their post-it marriage has gone down in TV history as one of the most memorable of all time, their proposal was equally as epic. This television IT couple from the 2000s frustrated us with their constant back and forth.
Finally, Derek tells Meredith he wants to spend the rest of his life with her in the hospital elevator surrounded by CT scans to mark all the important steps they’ve taken together. It’s a fantastic round-up of the series so far and the perfectly romantic height of this relationship.
“If there’s a crisis you don’t freeze, you move forward. You get the rest of us to move forward because you’ve seen worse, you’ve survived worse. And you know we’ll survive too. You say you’re all dark and twisty, it’s not a flaw. It’s a strength. It makes you who you are. I’m not gonna get down on one knee. I’m not gonna ask a question. I love you, Meredith Grey and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Derrick said.
Tali and Darren (Tali’s Wedding Diary)
Okay so this one might not be a “best” but it’s pretty great. Tali and Darren are running on the promenade in Sea Point, Cape Town. Down on the rocks, Tali is taking photos for Insta when Darren gets down on one knee. It’s classic Joburg girl vibes when she starts screaming “oh my god” over Darren’s romantic proposal and makes him repeat for a video on Insta.
While not the most romantic and more a spoof on the millennial obsession with documenting everything, it is great to see a more “realistic” if not slapstick version of a proposal on our screens.
South Africa is a top wedding destination, with many beautiful venues to choose from. From outdoor wine farm weddings to beautiful hotels with big banquet halls, there is no shortage of traditional options. For the couple with a sense of adventure, there are unique options as well.
Here is our list of unique wedding venues to make your day stand out.
Getting married outside may be cliché but there is nothing boring about having your wedding in one of the country’s most spectacular nature reserves. This is an especially good choice for nature lovers, who would welcome the singing of the area’s birds and rippling of the water alongside their ceremony.
There are options as to where exactly in the reserve you’d like to have your wedding, so it can be tailored to your taste. Choose to say “I do” under a beautiful Fig Tree, alongside the Reserve’s 19km vlei or an indoor wedding in a rustic “shed” venue.
The area’s pristine white sand dunes also make for a great backdrop for those important wedding photos.
Wine estates are not usually a particularly unique option but Backsberg offers something unlike most others, the option to get married in a cellar among the massive wine barrels. Wine lovers, this one is for you.
Walk down the aisle as guests sit on either side as the huge old oak barrels tower over the ceremony and chandeliers give the scene a warm glow. Although pretty big, the set-up of this cellar makes for a cozier feel and more intimate ceremony.
Arguably the most striking building in Cape Town, the Zeitz MOCAA is a great museum wedding venue option for art and architecture lovers alike. You can have your ceremony on the roof with Table Mountain framed by the polygon windows behind you while your guests sit on the glass ceiling of the museum’s main chamber.
Hold your reception in the dining room of the hotel’s restaurant and dine on world-class food by their chef.
Bush weddings, while available across the country, are a truly South African choice. While many offer a wedding venue in their lodge which is beautiful, getting married right in the bush is truly unique.
Some game reserves outside of Kruger National Park, such as Timbavati, offer the unique experience of having the ceremony outdoors in a dry riverbed on the reserve. These kind of venues get you right into the bushveld and offer the opportunity for some local wildlife to pass as you say your vows.
This is for the venue for a true Capetonian couple as nothing is closer to the city’s heart than its mountain. The mountain boasts six different wedding venue options, both outside and inside, that look over the city from this magnificent peak.
Guests and the wedding party will make their way up to this incredible spot on the cable car, taking in the view as they prepare to celebrate your big day. The Table Mountain function team will have whichever location you choose set up for you as well.
The Centre for the Book in Cape Town is an old Edwardian building which is impressive on the outside and inside. Originally built for the University of the Cape of Good Hope, it now houses the South African Library’s special collections. This makes it perfect for all those book nerds out there!
You can host your reception here, on the lower floor surrounded by stacked, old wooden bookshelves above. This provides a very antique aesthetic feel and makes for beautiful photographs.
It is a public space so renting it out is a bit more complicated than somewhere already geared for events.
Marine lovers, this one’s for you, uShaka Marine World lets your special day take place among the sounds of the ocean. With the cool blues of the water dancing off the table and your dress, it has the ambiance built right in.
Couples can hold their ceremony in the park’s Shipwreck Aquarium where your guests and the fish can share in your big day.
This venue is for those who love a bit of old-world charm and find something romantic in the idea of a train journey. Rovos Rail’s Events Train can be hired as a wedding venue replete with all the luxury you would expect.
You can choose to hold the ceremony at the private Edwardian station after the bride makes her entrance in the private cab of a steam locomotive. The reception is then held on board the train as it makes a three-hour roundtrip journey.
This charming option will also make you feel like you’ve had a destination wedding, without even leaving the country.
After having most of their lives in the spotlight, it’s understandable that some celebrities would choose to keep an intimate occasion like their wedding a secret. Although it’s frustrating for us, their fans, because we want to know all the details, not having paparazzi around makes for a much calmer atmosphere on the big day.
Here are just some celebrity couples who kept their nuptials hush-hush.
Everything about these two has been kept on the down-low. First, their private wedding ceremony held at Cameron’s home in Beverly Hills in 2015 and then their baby, who most of the world only found out about when she was born this year.
Many fans might not even know that Margot Robbie is married so this might even be a surprise in itself. The actress married Tom Ackerley in a very secret ceremony in Australia in 2015. Only 50 guests were invited and weren’t even told the location of the wedding before the event.
Despite being possibly the most famous and beloved couple (except for that short moment where Jay was hated by the Beyhive after Lemonade was released), these two have always been very private and not showy about their relationship. The two got married in a secret ceremony in New York in 2008, with footage only being released slowly over the years since then (including in the above mentioned visual album).
This one might be the best kept secret wedding in Hollywood history as there aren’t any details about it even after the fact. The That 70s show co-stars got married without so much as an anniversary Instagram picture to show it happened. The world only found out when Mila wore her wedding ring too when she appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden.
Besides the fact that they were married in 2012 and in South Carolina, there is little information on the marriage of possibly the two most beautiful people currently married in Hollywood. This might be disappointing but at least we get to see their pranks and hear these two lovebirds gush about each other in interviews.
These two have been together for ages but very little is known about their relationship at all and especially about their secret 2010 wedding in the Bahamas.
Another couple you might not have even known were together. The Gilmore Girls star married the Mad Men actor in 2014 after a year-long engagement but little else is known about the ceremony.
There is just something about the Late Late Show with James Corden which makes even the most secretive celebrities want to spill the beans. Amanda and Thomas got married in an incredibly private ceremony, with just themselves and their dog in 2016. Thomas revealed the marriage on the show in 2017, saying the couple eloped.
Semenya and Rawboya married in 2015 but have been together for years before this. They support each other and show us what it really means to be there for the great and hard times. If Caster’s social media hints are anything to go by, they couple are expecting their first child soon!
These two amazing actresses officially announced their relationship in 2015 and everyone immediately fell in love with them. They met in 2005, but only began dating a decade later in 2015 after Taylor slid into Paulson’s Twitter DMs. Their 32-year age difference caused a media stir but the couple are still going strong and love gushing about each other.
Wanda and Alex’s story is right out of a rom-com. Wanda first saw Alex on a ferry and then later was introduced to her by a friend. The two married in 2006, a month before Wanda officially came out and Alex gave birth to their twins, Olivia and Lucas, in 2009.
The Modern Family star tied the knot with his lawyer husband in 2013, after two years of dating. The two are expecting the birth of their first child in July 2020.
It was love before first sight. Wiley said she was enamoured with her now wife when she first read the script Morelli wrote for the show Orange is the New Black, which Wiley starred in. The two grew their romantic love from a deep friendship and married in 2017.
Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo and partner Mohale Motaung met in 2017 and got engaged a year later. These two love each other so much and are so extravagant that they planned and had multiple weddings. Their first was a traditional wedding extravaganza of epic proportions, followed by a lavish white wedding. They had planned a third wedding in Italy, but cancelled it due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
George and Brad did not just get married but made sure that they represent their community as the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license in West Hollywood. They got hitched in 2008 at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
The Queer Eye fashion guru has revealed snippets of his relationship on the show. Audiences were captivated by the story their nonchalant engagement, where they just decided to get married without any fuss. The two have been married ten years and are ever the well put together pair.
The comedian and his husband celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary this year, though they had been together for 12 years before they officially took their vows. There is nothing more inspiring than those who have already made the long haul and show no signs of slowing down.
Neil and David might be the most famous same-sex couple in Hollywood, or at least the best on social media. The two have been together since 2004. David first proposed to Neil in 2007 and Neil proposed right back a year later. However, the two only announced their engagement in 2011 after already having their two adorable twins. They eventually walked down the aisle in 2014.
TV and the LGBT community have come a long way. From a time when the idea of an openly gay or bisexual character was thought to be scandalous, we really have come a long way in celebrating all kinds of couples and sexualities.
There is still more work to do so that this community is properly represented, but here are some of the best of those couples who have already graced our screens.
When the show first aired, having a gay couple among the main cast wasn’t incredibly common, especially when the storyline focused on families. While there has been some criticism of their portrayal of this couple, Cam and Mitch have become celebrated among fans of the show and occasional watchers.
From their legal wedding as the US granted marriage rights to LGBT couples to them raising their adopted daughter, Cam and Mitch inspire any couple to work together to overcome life’s challenges.
Ray Holt, the stoic police captain in the show bucks the traditional stereotype of the flamboyant gay man. Him and his husband Kevin support each others very different careers and find affection and love in their shared interest. The couple also represent the struggle LGBT couples have had to suffer through to get where we are today, with references often made to the hostile, homophobic work and social environments they faced as both a gay and mixed-race couple.
This episode was an interesting turn for the often miserable, forewarning series. Unlike other episodes which showed how technology could hurt us, San Junipero showed how Yorkie could come together because of it. The entire episode leaves you rooting for this couple, who eventually find happiness in San Junipero (which was filmed in beautiful South Africa, proving heaven is in fact Camps Bay beach).
This comedy series is so outrageous but this heartwarming couple and love story gave some heart to the show. They compliment each other and show how you’re meant to support your partner, especially through tough moments.
This couple really showed the difficulties of being openly gay and how hard it is to come to terms with your sexuality yourself, never mind with another person as well. Mickey went from homophobic bully to loving partner through the series, struggling with his own self-loathing as a result of ingrained hatred from his family. The sometimes hard to watch ups and downs truly reflect how hard society pushes people to deny who they are and how having someone believe in you can make a difference.
One of the most-loved couples on TV, they have been through a lot. We mean A LOT. From a plane crash to a leg amputation, they have been through it. While not the only LGBT couple on the show, they were the first and most remembered by those who have stuck with it and those who gave the show up.
From best friends to wives, the couple journey of these two Cheerios was not simple but a great one to watch. Also not the only LGBT couple on the show, Santana and Brittney were memorable as they weren’t openly out from the beginning of the show. The audience got to grow with these two and experience their journey to their personal truths and to each other.
They may not have ended up together but they were great while they lasted. They were loving and neither a stereotype. It was also great to watch a couple move through the experience of wanting different things and still remaining friends once they have parted.
Omar is one of the first LGBT black characters portrayed on TV with the nuance and complexity such a depiction deserves. Their intimate moments are shattered by Brandon’s tragic and gruesome end, but then again this is The Wire.
This is a controversial one as many people didn’t think these two should have ended up together. Eric chose Adam, which is testimony to their connection. When Adam asks Eric to hold his hand, even those who don’t back this pairing were melting. While it may not work out as Adam has much to work through, it was a nice ending to this fraught relationship.
This couple were supernaturally awesome. From their first meeting to their telekinetic escape, the audience were captured by their connection. Although we had to watch the tragic end as Tara’s dies, they will always be among the best couples on TV.
Angel and Papi are perfect. He entirely devotes his support and love to her as she strives for her dreams, while walking at Ballroom, auditioning for modelling jobs and in every day life. While they have some ups and downs, Papi is always there for her and their engagement is the cherry on top of the second season.
Albert Einstein may have been known for his theory of relativity but his personal life was far from perfect.
Einstien was married twice, first to Mileva Marić a fellow scientist in 1904 and then after their divorce he married his cousin Elsa Löwenthal in 1919.
While there are many details to these marriages, which were discovered in letters Einstein wrote to his partners and others throughout his life, one of the most shocking are the demands Einstein gave his first wife as their marriage fell apart.
In the book Einstein: His Life and Universe, Walter Isaacson revealed a list that Einstein had written up for Marić around 1914. It was at this point that she had realised he was in love with his cousin and their relationship had deteriorated.
To come up with a way to stay together for their children, Einstein wrote out a list of rules for his wife which placed her in the role of his servant more than his partner.
Under the title “Conditions” they were written out as follows:
A. You will make sure:
that my clothes and laundry are kept in good order;
that I will receive my three meals regularly in my room;
that my bedroom and study are kept neat, and especially that my desk is left for my use only.
B. You will renounce all personal relationships with me insofar as they are not completely necessary for social reasons. Specifically you will forego:
my sitting at home with you
my going out or travelling with you
C. You will obey the following points in your relations with me:
you will not expect any intimacy from me nor reproach me in any way;
you will stop talking to me if I request it;
you will leave my bedroom or study immediately without protest if I request it.
D. You will undertake not to belittle me in front of our children, either through words or behaviour.
Most can agree that even for the early 1900s this is a pretty harsh list so it was no wonder the two got divorced only a few years later.
Celebrities are often expected to have big lavish weddings, but those who don’t like mixing the spotlight with their personal lives know that keeping their nuptials private in a grand church or great hotel is pretty hard. That’s why some opt to keep it very intimate and have the ceremony in the privacy of their own home.
Here are some of the famous couples who got married at home.
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma had a simple garden wedding at the end of 2019. They married in the garden of their home which they share with their two children, surrounded by loved ones, with the reception in a marquee that had been decorated for the occasion.
The couple had a secret wedding at their Nashville ranch in an intimate Christmas-time ceremony. Their home was filled with flowers for the occasion and friends and family attended the intimate nuptials.
A post shared by Zoë Kravitz (@zoeisabellakravitz) on
Zoe Kravitz and Karl Glusman got married in her dad, Lenny Kravitz’s, Parisian home. While not quite a down-to-earth affair seeing as how the home is an 18th- century mansion and the couple were surrounded by their A-list celebrity friends who flew out for the occasion, it still had a homey, simple feel.
Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith also took their wedding to their back garden. The two married in Moore’s back garden in 2018 which was transformed with rugs and flowers matching her bohemian style wedding dress.
This wasn’t just a wedding at their home, but a surprise for everyone involved. It wasn’t only because the guests thought they were going to a Fourth of July party, the couple weren’t even engaged before the wedding. Daniel Modor waited until midnight to propose to Julia and they decided to just get married on the spot! Seriously romantic.
Another surprise wedding! Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux didn’t tell their guests they were attending a wedding until they arrived. They thought they were coming over to Justin’s home for a birthday party but were asked to hand over their phones as they went to the back garden for the ceremony.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi were married in their lavish Beverley Hills home in 2008. While the occasion was small and intimate, it was beautifully decked out with the couple saying their vows underneath a white tent.
This wedding was one the whole world seemed to have been waiting for. Brangelina, who had been notoriously secretive about their relationship, did not surprise when they said their I do’s in an intimate ceremony in their French estate Chateau Miraval in 2014. The ceremony is best remembered for Angelina’s touching veil which included pictures drawn by their children.
What is with weddings being at-home and surprises? Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden had a surprise wedding they hid from guests as a pre-Golden Globes party in 2015. The guests arrived at Cameron’s Beverly Hills home to find a tented garden where the ceremony took place, followed by a reception with a performance by Ryan Adams and Lionel Richie.
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth tied the knot in 2011 on a ranch estate in Ojai, California. The ranch is private and far from the hustle of Los Angeles. Reese’s children were involved in the ceremony and the guest list was full of A-list celebrities.
Movies are idealised versions of our messy, no-quite-so-perfect reality. This includes marriage proposals, which are often even grander and more emotionally satisfying on the screen. Here are some of the best marriage proposals through the ages.
1. Love Actually
This proposal is all about the power of love. Despite never having spoken a word the other could understand, Jamie and Aurelia feel a connection, leading both to attempt to learn the other’s language. We can’t help but melt as her entire town follows him as he searches for Aurelia and proposes to her in clumsy Portuguese and she says yes in equally clumsy English.
2. Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason
After two whole movies watching these two be on and off depending on which frustrating mishap or misunderstanding has happened, we finally get a typically Bridget awkward proposal. After interrupting Mark’s meeting to ask him to take her back, Bridget awkwardly leaves only to be met with a proposal from Mark in the hallway, even repeating it to make it slightly more perfect.
3. Sex and the City
Big and Carrie were the biggest ‘will they, won’ they’ couples of the 1990s. While the couple’s first proposal is dull and uninspiring, after their first attempt at a wedding didn’t go as planned we got the proposal we deserved. Carrie deserved nothing short of a proposal in a beautiful penthouse apartment with the perfect Manolo Blahnick heels.
4. Walk the Line
There is no bigger proposal than one that takes place on stage in front of everyone. Although this isn’t the first proposal throughout the movie, as Johnny is relentless despite June’s protests, it is the one where she says yes. Some may call it peer pressure (how can you say no to that blackmail?) but for the sake of fantasy, we’re chalking this up to a grand gesture.
5. The Proposal
This one had to make the list, the entire movie is premised on the concept of a proposal! While Margaret’s deal with Andrew is a kind of proposal, the real heart-warmer is that Andrew’s declaration of love comes after an antagonistic relationship grows into love with him finally asking her to “Marry me…because I’d like to date you.”
6. He’s Just Not That Into You
This entire movie about relationships involves many characters, but the most down-to-Earth, frustrating pair are Neil and Beth. Neil doesn’t believe in marriage and after an ultimatum by Beth, they break-up and he lives a sad life on his boat. After proving he is more of a husband not married to her than her sisters’ real husbands, Beth takes Neil back. While that may have been a sweet ending in itself, the best moment comes when Neil proposes using a pair of cargo pants Beth hates. “Check the pocket first,” he says, where she finds the ring box. He drops to a knee and asks, “Will you marry me?” and she says, “Of course.”
7. About Time
This simple proposal is as sweet as the film it features in. Tim wakes Mary up to ask her to marry him, at first she doesn’t realise what he’s getting at but once she does she says yes. This simple, truly romantic proposal is much sweeter and realistic than a grand proposal.
8. Sweet Home Alabama
This is a double proposal spectacular and which one you prefer really depends on what kind of person you are. First there is the New York lavish surprise proposal where Andrew takes Melanie into a darkened room before flicking on the lights and revealing it to be the inside of Tiffany’s so she can pick a ring. The second is the sweet, childhood sweetheart proposal between a young Melanie and Jake as he asks her to marry him. “Why would you want to marry me for, anyhow?” she asks. “So I can kiss you anytime I want,” he responds.
9. When Harry Met Sally
Harry fulfils the ideal of the proper but romantic speech to convince Sally that they are meant to be together. “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible,” he says.
10. Crazy Rich Asians
One of the most recent entries on this list, this proposal takes the cliché airport chase to the next level, ending up actually on the plane. After getting the approval and ring from his mother, Nick rushes to Rachel before she flies back to the US. It’s a cute spin and the beautiful ring and engagement party at the end makes it one for the books.
