Bridal showers are one of the most popular pre-wedding occassions. The event is a party in honour of the bride and a step towards preparing for married life. Brides look forward to spending quality time with their closest female friends and family, and having all the important people get to know each other before the big day.

This can be a heavy weight on the shoulders of those planning the bridal shower. There are quite a few things that need to be kept in mind. We’re quite certain that you want to make the day as amazing as possible.

Here are a few tips to help you ensure that things run smoothly and turn out perfectly:

    – Who hosts and pays?

Usually, bridesmaids are the ones who take control of the bridal shower. In fact, tradition (which has changed with the times) says that the brides family should not throw the shower. These days, however, the bride or grooms mother may be involved in organising too. The bride should barely be involved in the planning!

    – When and where should it be?

The bridal shower can be held from about 3 months before the wedding to a few weeks before.

The venue depends on the individual circumstances. If the host has a big enough space at home then it could be held there. It could also be at a family members home, or a restaurant.

    – Who is invited?

Most importantly, only people who are invited to the wedding should be considered for the bridal shower. Included in the guest list should be the bridal party, the bride and grooms mothers, female family members, and female friends. It is not necessary to invite every single woman in the brides life, just the most important ones.

    – When to send out invites?

You should aim to send out the invitations about a month before the time for the latest. This ensures that guests save the date well in advance. It also ensures that guests can plan gifts and travel (if they live far away).

Extra tip: on the invitation you should include the brides name, the hosts information, date, time, location, RSVP information and registry information. Your invite sets the tone for the event, so make sure it looks good too!

    – What food do I serve?

Since this is a celebration, it would be appropriate to have some cake and desserts. Finger foods such as sliders, savouries, and sandwiches are also a good addition.

Alcoholic beverages are acceptable, but make sure you keep it classy. Go with some champagne or cocktails. You can also serve tea and coffee towards the end of the event.

    – Are there any traditions to follow?

It is generally not necessary to follow tradition if you don’t want to. However, some traditions include having something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue handed over to the bride. Another one that is quite popular is creating a bouquet using the ribbons from gifts and using the bouquet at the rehearsal.

Tradition also says that the shower should include various games about the bride and grooms relationship and games that are a bit embarrassing for the bride. These have mostly faded away over time.

    Gift specific tips:

    – How do I ask guests to come with gifts?

Most guests will know that a gift is necessary for a bridal shower. However, simply adding the registry on the invitation is an indirect way of reminding guests about gifts. The bride can also request that nobody brings gifts if she so pleases.

    – Does the bride open gifts at the shower?

Another bridal shower tradition is one that suggests the bride should open all the gifts at the shower. This is not necessary at all. It could be used as an ice-breaker, but if the bride prefers to open gifts in private thats fine too!

If gifts are being opened at the shower, ensure that somebody is keeping track of who has given what. The bride will need to send thank you cards a few weeks after the shower. If she can’t remember who gave her what, that would be a disaster!

    – Hostess gifts?

This one is a bonus tip for the bride. Be sure to get the hostess a gift as a token of your gratitude. Throwing a bridal shower is no small task and we’re sure you want your hostess to know that you appreciate her efforts!

Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, got engaged to professional football player and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow on January 9, 2019. Since then, the couple have been very secretive about the details of their wedding.

The top questions on everyone’s mind are where the wedding will be and what the dress will look like. Both questions are yet to be answered.

They have, however, shared a few small details here and there in interviews and on their social media accounts. Here is what we know so far:

    – Demi is completely in control

Tebow mentioned in an interview that the planning is being done mostly by Nel-Peters. He said that all he wants is to be surrounded by the people he loves, and whatever his fiancé plans will be perfect.

    – Zavion Kotze will be planning the wedding

Nel-Peters chose the highly regarded and popular Zavion Kotze to design and coordinate their wedding. Kotze launched his events company in 2010 and specialises in event management, wedding planning and floral design.

    – Demi has six bridesmaids

In an interview with David’s Bridal, Demi divulged some information about the bridal party. She said that she has six bridesmaids; all of whom are women she holds dear and whom she hopes will be in her life forever. With regards to her bridesmaids she said, “I don’t think it would have been as fun without them”.

    – We have an idea of their wedding dance

Tebow posted a video to his Instagram captioned, “Cha-cha slide is pretty tough”. The video shows the couple practicing the Cuban dance, with Tim sweating through his shirt. Demi posted a picture on the same day captioned, “Our first ‘first dance’ lesson”. We’re sure they’ll nail it on the big day!

    – The guest list may include some of Nel-Peters’ fellow beauty queens

Nel-Peters told Channel24 in August, that she had invited some of her pageant sisters to attend her wedding. The wedding is sure to have heads turning with both the decor and the guests.

    – We will see the wedding photos

The couple took to Instagram to ask their followers for help. They wanted some suggestions on a wedding hashtag. Surely this means they’re intending to post the wedding photos for us all to marvel at.

    – A potential wedding song

In an interview with Jacaranda FM, Nel-Peters said that the Matthew Mole track, “The Wedding Song” is very special to the couple. She said that the song is being considered as a potential wedding song.

    – They’re preparing for marriage, not just a wedding

Demi mentioned in an interview that she and Tebow have been reading books about marriage and attending pre-marriage counselling. This additional piece of preparation is sure to make their wedding day and life together even more special.

    – The wedding should be soon

Nel-Peters has already had her bachelorette party and bridal shower. This is a sign that the wedding date may be soon.

Honeymoon planning is technically part of wedding planning. The honeymoon usually takes place quite close to the wedding day, and this leaves you with very little time to make last minute adjustments. That’s why you should get ahead with organising.

If the trip is not well planned, it may leave you feeling a bit unsatisfied and disappointed. We wouldn’t want you to feel that way about – what should be – one of the most exciting, love-filled getaways of your life.

To help you out, and ensure that you have the best honeymoon possible, here are some honeymoon mistakes to avoid.

    – Not doing your research

This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. In order for your trip to be all you’ve ever imagined it to be, unfortunately, you can’t rely on your imagination while planning.

You need to do research on destinations, to find out whether the places you want to go are affordable and if there are any customs and practices that you should take into consideration. Researching the destination will also tell you when their peak tourist times are, if that’s something you want to avoid. It’ll also give you an idea of the weather, which will definitely affect your decision.

If you’re doing research about your hotel, make sure you’re looking at reviews and not just the hotel’s webpages. This will give you a better idea of where you’ll be staying.

    – Not setting a budget

You should set a budget before you book anything. In fact, your plans should be based on the funds that you have. Decide on how much you can spend or are willing to spend on the trip as a whole. Then separate that into a budget including flights, hotels, activities, shopping and food. This way you won’t put yourselves into debt to finance your honeymoon.

Another smart move would be to put some money aside for unforeseen expenses. Anything can happen, and you wouldn’t want to be short of money in an unfamiliar place.

    – Booking your tickets with your new name

If you’re taking your partners last name, you’re probably excited to start using it. We understand! While you’re most definitely free to start using it in your day-to-day, it may be better to use your previous last name when booking your flights.

Changing your name on your passport and other identification documents will be a long process, and it most likely will not be completed in time. The name on your ticket needs to match the name on your passport, or you will not be allowed to board. Additionally, airlines charge a large fee to change ticket details.

    – Planning to leave immediately after the wedding

We know that traditions can be difficult to break. Leaving for your honeymoon on the night of your wedding is one of the traditions you’ll have to try extra hard to avoid.

Leaving immediately will likely have you feeling tired and more stressed than you should be. The wedding day is long. Make sure you have at least a day or two to rest before you leave.

    – Forgetting to tell people you’re on your honeymoon

If you let the hotel know you’re on your honeymoon, they may give you some special treatment. Don’t miss out on fun treats and possible upgrades!

You should also ensure that the office knows you’re on your honeymoon. It would be unfortunate to be bothered  by work emails and calls all day.

    – Doing too much or too little

If you do too many activities, you may overspend and you may tire yourself out. But, if you do too little,  you’ll regret not experiencing the place you’re visiting. Activities are what makes a trip memorable. So make sure you’re doing enough to have all the fun, but not so much that you get no down time.

    – Missing out on local cuisine and attractions

You may get caught up in the “honeymoon” of it all, spending all your time getting couples massages and having a luxurious time at the hotel. Make sure that you don’t miss out on all the things that your chosen destination has to offer. Local food and tourist attractions can make your honeymoon unique and unforgettable.

Thailand has become one of the top honeymoon destinations. It’s affordability, beautiful attractions and many fun activities make it an easy choice. Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, and is home to some of the country’s most popular beaches. Picking Phuket as your honeymoon destination is a decision you won’t regret.

If you’re staying in Phuket, there is no need to be confined to the island. Thailand is one of the best places for island hopping and you can easily make your way from Phuket to one of the many other surrounding Islands including Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Lipe. But if you want to spend most of your time in Phuket, there are lots of activities to keep you busy.

    Explore Phuket Old Town

See the unique architecture, get some great photos, and explore the area with an experienced guide. It will be an experience like no other due old town’s interesting history and blend of Chinese and colonial influences. You’ll also get great street food and see the best of sights.

    Have a seaside dinner

The La Gritta restaurant has a stunning view of the ocean and the mountainside. There is nothing like a romantic dinner with a view to end off a lovely day on your honeymoon.

Bask in the glory of Big Buddha

The Big Buddha is so large that it can be seen from anywhere in Southern Phuket. It is also one of the top attractions on the island. It is not to be missed.

    Visit the animals responsibly

Phuket is well known for being home to beautiful elephants. Many have reported, however, that elephants are mistreated at some theme parks, including the Phuket FantaSea. The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary has been recommended as a more responsible way to interact with the elephants in Phuket. Watching these magnificent creatures happily roam will be a highlight of your trip.

Shop till you drop at the markets

Phuket is host to various night markets, which are great because it means you can do your shopping in a cooler environment and avoid the heat of the Phuket day. There is also the Phuket Weekend Market (Naka Market). This is the biggest market on the Island and you’re sure to get some great deals. If you want some souvenirs, some local food, or just want to see what goods are on offer on the island then these should be your first stop!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BPw9X04BdQ_/

    Island hopping with added activities

There are various day tours to the Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island (where the 1974 James Bond movie was shot), Phang Nga Bay, and Maya Bay. On these day tours you’ll see some monkeys, go snorkelling, swim in the stunning ocean, and be be treated to some delicious food.

Have cocktails at a rooftop sunset bar

Baba Nest is an exclusive rooftop bar in Phuket. It’s one of the best places to catch the sunset with a drink in hand. Watching the sunset is a classic honeymoon activity and this bar ensures that you do it in style.

Who said romance at cricket matches is dead? Mzansi Super League (MSL) 2.0 is not just about bats and balls, but about love in action too.
SuperSport Park came to a standstill last Friday when one lucky couple’s dreams became a reality. They got engaged out on the field in front of thousands of spectators at their favourite venue during the Tshwane Spartans and Paarl Rocks clash last Friday evening.
There was probably no better backdrop than one of the most picturesque venues in the world when Jacques Storm (32) decided that it was time to “do the right thing” and ask his girlfriend of three years, Lizelle Smit (24), for her hand in marriage. What he might not have known was that his cameo inning would eclipse all cheers that might have been reserved for AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Tabraiz Shamsi on the night.
Storm, having given his idea to the tournament organisers, hoodwinked his soon-to-be fiancée into believing that they were lucky ticket winners and that they had to claim their ultimate prize out on the field during the interval break. Then as the live SABC cameras were rolling, he got on one knee to ask Smit for her hand in marriage.
“Let me tell you this – my mouth was so dry. I was so nervous that I battled to get the words out, but I think I she understood what I was trying to say!” said Storm as he recalls the most important day of his life. “Lizelle was also so nervous she almost started crying. I think it was seeing so many people sitting and cheering behind us.”
“I am a sporting person, having played SA Schools cricket when I was 19, so there was no other place for me to do what I considered the right thing to do, and to be with a person that has contributed immensely to me over the last two years. I didn’t want to do the obvious and go to a restaurant. I wanted to make it unique – so I am glad that I could get to do it in an MSL game.”
Smit also added: “I am not going to lie, I was definitely not expecting it, but it turned out to be a fantastic night. It turned out to be a really good shock.”
“I knew she was going to say yes…but my colleagues at work kept asking me, saying ‘what if she says no?’ in the days leading up to the event. I must confess, it did create some doubt. I was mostly convinced that she would say yes, because we had just moved in together the week before,” he said.
“The fans kept coming to congratulate us for the rest of the game. Even when we went out for drinks after the match, people recognised us. Let me put it this way: we have received plenty of venue suggestions for our marriage.”
“We have not thought of a venue, but even if it is behind the sightscreen at a cricket field, I am just glad that Lizelle said yes when I proposed to her.”

A bride is usually very easy to spot. She wears a wedding gown that stands out from the crowd, and there is absolutely no chance she’ll be mistaken for a bridesmaid. The groom on the other hand, may get lost in a sea of suits.

This seems a bit unfair. It would be a shame for a groom to not be seen on his big day. There are ways (some more subtle than others) for a groom to stand out from his groomsmen. Have a look at these ideas:

    – Different neckwear

If you’re wearing a tie, have your groomsmen wear bowties or vice versa. You could even switch it up completely by having your groomsmen sport classic neckwear while you wear an alternative neckpeice. There are way more alternatives than you think.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B4IqX5Unjdg/

    – Vary in suit colours

The colour of your suit makes a tremendous difference. This is one of the easiest ways to stand out from your groomsmen. You’ll be the main focus, without a doubt. This works especially well when your groomsmen wear more dull toned suits while you wear something brighter.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B2XZk4_hj9b/

    – Accessorize

Add something extra to your outfit. You could add a hat, a pocket watch, a brooch, or really anything you want. All you need to do is find the best way to incorporate it.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BzbVCu6h00R/

    – Play with patterns

If you really want to make a statement, you should consider adding some patterns. Keep your suit the same colour as your groomsmen, but add some pizzaz by adding a pattern. Alternatively, you could do this on a smaller scale by simply wearing a shirt with pattern or print while your groomsmen wear plain shirts.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B0IcOQXALkn/

    – Smart-casual groomsmen

By simply having your groomsmen ditch their blazers, you’ll be the centre of attention instantly.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B3jC5K_FSfQ/

    – Switch up your tie colour

If you’re the type of groom who wants to be set apart, but does’t want too much attention, simply switch the colour of your tie. This one is very subtle, but very effective.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bew5n3WnUeV/

    – Get creative with your boutonniere

Similar to the tie switch above, you could keep it simple and just vary in the colour of your boutonniere. You could also personalise it and get creative, there are endless possibilities. Have your groomsmen wear the classic flower, and hand craft your own boutonniere.

A proposal should be well planned and deliberately thought out. We’re sure you’ve imagined yours before. Who hasn’t? Perhaps you saw the movie The Wedding Singer, which led you to crave a public display. Maybe you watched Leap Year, and the proposal on the ocean-side cliff led you to consider something more private.

It’s also possible that you’re not sure if you (or your partner) would prefer a public or private proposal. Consider the pros and cons of a public proposal to help you make the final decision.

    Pros:

    – It will be an event to remember

The public gesture will play like a movie in your partners head for years and years to come. It will likely be one of their fondest memories.

A public proposal also makes it easier for you to catch the moment on video or in a series of photographs. Arrange for a friend or family member to secretly record everything as it happens, and make it a moment that lasts forever.

    – You can get other loved ones involved

Sharing this special moment with people who care dearly about you (and your partner) can make it feel extremely special. You’ll get to celebrate your engagement with your loved ones as it happens. On top of that, you can share the planning and preparations for the proposal with everyone you’re inviting to relieve some of the pressure.

    – It will be easier to spread the news

If your proposal is public, everyone you care about will either be there when it happens or will find out very soon after. You won’t have to spend a day calling everyone with the good news.

    Cons:

    – Might not go as planned

If you’ve been together for a long time, and you’ve spoken about marriage, then this shouldn’t be too much of a worry. However, there is always the chance that your partner says no. In public, a “no” will feel so much worse.

On a similar note, you cannot control the environment around you. You could get caught in bad weather, your big question may be drowned out by noise, and other people may try to get involved unexpectedly.

    – Unnecessary pressure

You could be putting unnecessary pressure on your partner to say yes, when they aren’t sure they’re ready to. They may feel more comfortable in a private setting to ask you to discuss the proposal and the way forward, but in public they can’t really do that.

You’ll also be putting a lot of pressure on yourself. A public proposal takes a lot of organizing and co-ordinating. If you’re not good under pressure, perhaps you should go for something more manageable.

    – Expenses can pile up

If you’re really going big, like writing “will you marry me” in the sky, you may have to spend quite a bit of money. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth it, because that money may be better spent on the wedding itself.

The most important thing to consider about a public proposal is what will be most comfortable for you and your significant other. If you don’t mind the attention and pressure, and the big gesture and fanfare has always been something you wanted, then go for it!

Remortgaged your house to afford the wedding of your dreams? Stop! Avoiding these wedding planning pitfalls in your process will ensure you get your happily ever after.

    1. Not sticking to a budget

Planning a wedding spans a few months or more, so it can be difficult to keep track of every cent spent. Before you plan anything, draw up a realistic budget and do your best to stick to it. You’ll likely underestimate some costs (‘Fairy lights are how much?’), but this will help you make the right choice when it comes to your venue and the size of your guest list, which are often the two biggest expenses.

Add a ‘Miscellaneous’ column to your spreadsheet for unforeseen costs that may crop up. If you don’t end up using that money, treat yourself and your partner to a spa day on your honeymoon. You won’t regret that few thousand you cut from the decor column when you’re having the holiday of your life.

    2. Starting too late

If you want to lose five kilos (who doesn’t?), start now. Don’t subsist on lettuce leaves and water for the month leading up to your big day – not only will you have to make major alterations to your dress at the eleventh hour, you’ll have no energy to enjoy the celebrations. Slow and steady wins the race.

Same goes for booking your venue and vendors. The best ones get snapped up a year in advance, so get in there as early as possible to ensure you bag the team of your dreams.

    3. Having too many ideas

Mason jars! Polaroid guest book! Giant Jenga! Rustic, modern, country glam, city chic… The wealth of wedding inspo on the internet can clutter your brain and turn your day into a mishmash of random themes, colours and styles. Before you go down the rabbit hole, decide on a theme or colour scheme, then search for reference images based only on this.

When in doubt, KISS (keep it simple, stupid).

    4. Sweating the small stuff

Your groom’s tie doesn’t match your shoes, the linen isn’t quite the shade of off-white you wanted or the doves don’t fly off on cue. It’s easy to get bogged down in the tiniest details, but every bride will tell you their day didn’t go exactly to plan – and it’s 99.9% likely yours won’t either. When the confetti hits the fan, take a deep breath, and ask yourself if this will matter tomorrow (hint: it won’t), then move on.

Always have a plan B for major disasters. Hire a tent in case your outdoor wedding gets rained out. Pack an emergency kit (wet wipes, deodorant, safety pins, needle and thread, tampons). Have a designated helper on the day (if not a coordinator) to deal with any MIA vendors. Back-up plans save lives.

    5. Going DIY crazy

Yes, it guarantees your wedding will be one of a kind and keeps the costs down, but it also means you’ll be running around on the morning of, setting everything up instead of having pink bubbly for breakfast. Rather choose one or two things you really want to do to avoid overloading yourself. Don’t forget to ask for help. If you’ve made your own flower arrangements and bunting, nominate a reliable family member/friend to set them up for you on the day. Or get your bridal party together to handmake wedding favours.

An island getaway is possibly the perfect choice for a honeymoon. Some time by the beach is exactly what you need after months of wedding planning and organisation. Zanzibar provides you with exactly that. But, it also offers much more than just beaches to relax at. The island has rich history, amazing natural beauty, and comes with various attractions. Here are some of the top honeymoon activities in Zanzibar.

    Enjoy a Rooftop Restaurant Dinner

At the rooftop restaurant, Emerson on Hurumzi, you can enjoy one of the best views of the sun setting over the sea as you have your dinner. The rooftop is one of the highest in Stone Town and thus provides a nearly unmatchable view. You’ll also be treated with live entertainment in the form of Taraab music which is a genre that is popular in Tanzania and Kenya. It is best to book in advance, because this restaurant really draws in the crowds. However, if you don’t get a spot here, they also have a sister restaurant called the Tea House Restaurant, which is very similar.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/By07Le3InpJ/

    Explore Stone Town

A tour through Stone Town will expose you to the culture of Zanzibar. You’ll walk through the market where everything from spices to paintings and jewellery are on sale. On the tour you’ll also visit the house that Freddie Mercury grew up in the Old Fort, St Josephs Cathedral and more. If history interests you, this is the perfect way to spend a day.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bj9z1aZlw9N/

    Be with the butterflies

At the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, one of the largest of its kind in Africa, you’ll see beautiful tropical gardens filled with thousands of native butterflies. Not only is this a unique experience, but it is also educational and interactive. The butterfly centre is also a great place to take some honeymoon photographs.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/By4cGmVgQ3w/

    Take a dhow cruise

The cruise shows you the sunset in a way you’ve never seen before. Before that, however, most of the cruises available will take you to view (from the dhow) the Menai Bay Conservation Area and various other islands.  You’ll also be treated to lunch.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Ysr0en-0b/

    Go to Prison Island

It may sound unpleasant by it’s name, but it is totally the opposite. At Prison Island you can learn more about the history of Zanzibar, you can interact with and feed the giant tortoises, and you can go swimming or snorkelling. Only a short boat trip from the main island, Prison Island is a great adventure to take with your partner.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BjM30oShEnu/

    Take a cooking class

Food in Zanzibar is tremendously unique. On top of that, the island is very well known for its spices. Taking a cooking class together would not only leave you with some tricks to take to the kitchen at home, but it will be a romantic experience you’ll never forget. As we all know, food is the easiest way to win (or keep) someones heart.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BlApSUgjyIF/

Visit the restaurant on a Rock

One of the most distinctive restaurants you’ll ever see, The Rock Restaurant, is a top attraction for anybody visiting Zanzibar.
