    Wedding Gowns

    Category

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the wedding world upside down. From the guestlist to the fashion, it seems like everything has changed in 2020.

Many modern couples are hosting micro weddings in 2020, and hope to have bigger affairs later on when it is safe to do so. Smaller-scale celebrations call for less dramatic gowns.

We’ve seen quite a few pandemic brides opting aginst the traditional ballgown-length look in favour of a minidress or jumpsuit. Oscar de la Renta even showcased a bridal minidress in his 2021 bridal collection, meaning this look is right on trend.

Just because you’re wearing a minidress, does not mean it has to be simple. Go big with statement shoulders and dramatic detailing, or incorporate fun fabrics to add edge to your look.

Here are a few dresses to inspire you:

Modern brides are loving the bridal jumpsuit. Comfortable yet chic, it has become a fan favourite over the years for those wanting something different.

This year has been anything but normal for the wedding world, so it makes sense that one of the most popular bridal outfits is not a dress at all. Pandemic brides have been obsessed with a specific bridal jumpsuit that has taken over Instagram.

Designed by French bridal genius Rime Arodaky, the Patsy jumpsuit has become the most in-demand bridal look of the year.

Patsy features a fitted white bodice and trousers under sheer sleeves and a train that combines elegance with edgy detail. Its the greatest asset is its versatility, as it works in a number of settings. From a courthouse to a garden wedding or even an engagement party, this bridal look will turn heads.

Simply pair with block heels, and style your hair in loose waves or a chic updo with some loose tendrils to complete the ‘cool girl’ aesthetic.

A 75-year-old wedding gown is now standing proud as part of the Cradle Of Aviation Museum’s collection on Long Island. This dress is made of the silk of a parachute that once saved a man’s life.

The gown was made in 1945 for a woman named Evelyn, the mother of Kate and Mike Braet. It was fashioned out of a World War II parachute that saved their father’s life.

The siblings’ father, George, was a young army pilot. He was on a mission to defeat Hitler in Europe when his plane took on enemy fire. His parachute saved his life, although it was punctured by flying debris from the enemy attack.

Speaking to CBS2, Kate explains: “My father came home with this parachute filled with holes. If the parachute were not there, it would have killed him.”

He survived and he tied the knot with his love, Evelyn. During the war, silk was in short supply so Evelyn had the idea to transform the silk parachute into a wedding dress. She removed the Army/Navy lettering and salvaged the tattered pieces to create a stunning gown to walk down the aisle in.

“Something that was meant to save somebody from a crashing plane, then became the parachute that carried them throughout their marriage,” said Kate.

Decades later, the dress has now been donated to the Cradle of Aviation Museum to educate people on the reality of the war and how it impacted people.

“It’s just one story of millions, I’m sure, of what people went through during the war… and how difficult it was,” said Mike. “My parents are now going to live forever.”

“The story goes beyond us, because it’s a story of love. It’s a story of bravery. It’s a story of hope. It’s a story of future,” said Kate.

New York Bridal Fashion Week kicked off digitally in early October, offering stunning trends for brides-to-be for the 2021 season.

Although designers were given challenging circumstances with production halted across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they soldiered on to create unique shows to inspire us all.

A major trend this wedding season appears to be inspired by the pandemic itself. With the various restrictions around the world, many have opted for more relaxed and less traditional looks to reflect the mood of the current climate.

More jumpsuits and shorter dresses were showcased in shows this season, although they did not sacrifice style. Many designers went theatrical with volume and fabric. Detailed shoulder work, detachable capes and fun fabrics were the moods of the day. Tulle, lace, feathers and ruffles continue to be popular in the wedding world as well.

Here are a few of our favourite looks that graced the (digital) runway:

Popular wedding dress line David’s Bridal is taking their business into the digital realm. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the fashion line is offering a new technology that allows brides to view dresses in 3-D and augmented reality.

Davis’s Bridal is on a mission to modernise and streamline the shopping experience. Their online sales have been booming amid the pandemic, and their numbers may improve even further thanks to its newest innovation.

Working with 3-D and augmented reality firm Vertebrae, David’s has expanded its online platform to allow brides to view 52 dress styles using 3-D or augmented reality.

All a customer has to do is select a specific dress on the app while on their phone, and a 3-D rendering of a mannequin wearing the dress will appear. Customers can then angle their phone and walk around to get a full 360-degree view of the dress. Instead of zooming in, all you have to do is walk up to the dress to get a closer look at the details.

“The goal is how can we meet the customer where they’re at right now, which is in their home,” said Lizzy Ellingson, chief digital experience officer at David’s. “It’s about getting the customer to be able to see the details of a dress and the intricacies of a dress, which she might not have been able to see if she’s not going into a store.”

Many believe a wedding dress is the most important outfit one can ever wear. It’s the attire you choose to make an eternal promise to your love, so you’ll want to look your best.

With such weight and importance attached to an outfit, it’s easy to see why people opt to go big and bold for their special day. While lace, beading and applique detail are popular finishes to make a splash, it’s not necessary and can often times be quite costly. Sometimes, the most simple design is the most effective.

For those not into dramatic detail or for the budget conscious, there are many ways to still stun in a simple gown. The focus should be on the cut and fabric of the dress to make it appear more luxurious. An off-the-shoulder gown oozes sophistication, while small stylistic choices like adding a cape or twist detailing on your waist easily elevates a look.

If you’re in need of some inspiration, you’re in luck. Here are a few of our gowns sans-lace that are anything but boring:

The case for eloping strengthens with every day the COVID-19 pandemic continues. More and more couples are opting to spend their big day on a micro-scale, with only two witnesses and an officiant present.

If you were meant to marry this year and still want to go through with it despite the pandemic, the safest option is to elope. This way, only your absolute closest are present.

Considering elopements are a lot more casual, you have more options for what to wear. Shorter dresses are more appropriate if you intend to have a casual courthouse event, or even a mountaintop moment. Here are some lovely looks you can shop right now:

Eager fans of the British monarchy may now witness another famed Royal wedding dress up close. Princess Beatrice’s vintage wedding gown will go on display at Windsor Castle later this month.

The exhibition will be available to the public from September 24 through November 22. Both the dress and a silk replica of Princess Beatrice’s flowers will be included in the exhibition.

Almost two months after their planned wedding date, Princess Beatrice and entrepreneur Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi tied the knot in a small, private ceremony at Windsor on Friday, July 17 at the Royal Chapel of All Saints. They had their closest family members in attendance, including her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of York.

For her big day, the Princess wore a stunning vintage dress by Norman Hartnell and accessorised with the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, both belonging to Her Majesty the Queen. The tiara was worn by Queen Elizabeth on her wedding day in 1947.

She carried a bouquet of trailing jasmine, pale pink and cream sweet peas, royal porcelain ivory spray roses, pink o’hara garden roses, pink wax flower and baby pink astible. Of course, she had a sprig of myrtle in it as well to continue royal tradition.

The wedding dress had been slightly altered and modernised for the big day.

“The full-skirted silhouette was softened to give a more contemporary, simplified shape, and the underskirt and petticoats were recreated and bound with silk tulle. Short sleeves of triple organza were added to the straps and embroidered with vintage diamantés to match the original Hartnell embroidery design,” reads a statement about the new exhibition.

The effortless bride is made for the boho style. Inspired by nature and life, this aesthetic is all about being unconventional and free.

This style incorporates a more laid-back aesthetic with romantic and dreamy detail. It’s all about flow and comfort, which is why most boho brides opt for billowing sleeves and an A-line shape. Fabric also plays a key part in this style. Choose intricate lace detail, gentle embellishment and unique patterns for an eye catching finish.

Boho-inspired wedding dresses work especially well for outdoor weddings, and can also add a unique spin to a more formal occasion.
