Before Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sizzled on the silverscreen in their 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith, the movie star was married to America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston.

The iconic couple shared a deep love for one another, as well as matching outfits and hairstyles. If they had stayed married, they would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year.

As we know, things didn’t work out that way. Since we can’t predict the future, why not look back on how things used to be?

    The beginning:

Brad and Jen met in 1994 through their managers. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Aniston described him as a sweet, normal guy from Missouri. At the time, Pitt was dating fellow actor Gwyneth Paltrow, a relationship that would end a few years later in 1997.

In 1998 the pair first began dating after their agents set them up. It was on this first date that Aniston knew they were meant to be, she told Diane Sawyer in an interview.

“It was weird … That was a really easy evening. It was really fun.”

At the time, they were already two of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars, so it wasn’t long before their relationship was uncovered. In April 1999 they made their official debut as a couple at the Emmy Awards.

    Love and marriage:

A few months after going public, the pair announced their engagement at a Sting concert in November 1999. The pair crashed the stage and Aniston showed off her new diamond sparkler.

They tied the knot on July 29, 2000 on a Malibu bluff. For her big day, Aniston wore a glass-beaded floor length silk and satin gown with a low back, designed by Lawrence Steele. She accessorised with a circular veil topped with a pearl-and-Swarovski-crystal crown.

Their wedding had 200 guests who were entertained by four bands, a gospel choir and fireworks, reports People. The wedding is estimated to have cost $1-million.

Of course, Friends co-stars Courtney Cox Arquette, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Lisa Kudrow were in attendance (Matt LeBlanc could not attend as he was filming a movie in Budapest at the time).

Other notable names in attendance included Pitt’s Fight Club co-star Edward Norton with Salma Hayek, who he was dating at the time, as well as Cameron Diaz, David Arquette and David Spade. Aniston’s mother was not present, as they were estranged.

    Things fall apart:

For the first few years after their wedding, things were going well for the pair. In 2004 when Friends was ending, Aniston said she was looking forward to being able to dedicate time towards starting a family with Pitt.

“Yeah. It’s time. It’s time. You know, I think you can work with a baby, I think you can work pregnant, I think you can do all of it,” she said in an interview with The Guardian. “So I’m just truly looking forward to slowing down.”

At the time, Pitt had signed on to star in Mr and Mrs Smith alongside Angelina Jolie. In her interview, Aniston said she and Pitt planned to travel after filming wrapped.

As we all know, this was the beginning of the end of the couple. By May 2004, cheating rumours began to circulate and Pitt and Jolie became closer during filming.

Much later in 2006, Jolie told W Magazine that love began to blossom between them on set.

“Because of the film we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened,” she said. “I think a few months in I realized, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work.

“We just became kind of a pair. And it took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe.”

    It’s over:

In January 2005, Pitt and Aniston officially announced their separation.

“We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate,” read their joint statement. “For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another.”

By October of that same year, their divorce was finalised.

The world quickly took sides and joined wither ‘Team Jen’ and ‘Team Angie’ as news on the couple’s break-up dominated headlines. To date, its been one of the largest, most influencial celebrity break-ups in history in terms of its impact on pop culture.

In an interview, Aniston famously said Pitt was missing a sensitivity chip. She also later told Vogue that she learnt many details of the affair from interviews Pitt and Jolie did.

“There was stuff printed there that was definitely from a time when I was unaware that it was happening,” she says. “I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss. That stuff about how she couldn’t wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool.”

    Moving on

Since their breakup, Pitt went public with Jolie and they married in 2014. They have six children together, and announced their divorce in 2016, filing irreconcilable differences.

Aniston also remarried when she said ‘I do’ to actor Justin Therous in 2015. They later divorced in 2018.

With both actors single, many rumours began to circulate that they would get back together. Soon after his divorce, Pitt reportedly reached out to Aniston. In February 2019, he attended Aniston’s 50th birthday party and have had a few run-ins since.

The global pandemic has forced many couples across the world to postpone their big days, and celebrities are not exempt from this.

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and former The Bachelorette contestant Wells Adams were meant to tie the knot on August 9, but postponed due to COVID-19. This didn’t stop them from celebrating their big day, however.

Dressed all in white, the pair spent the day in style at a vineyard to honour their would-be special day.

“A couple, a pandemic, & a postponed wedding: A series. We were supposed to get married today. Instead… we took pictures and drank wine. I love you to Pluto & back @wellsadams,” Hyland wrote on Instagram.

Hyland showed an interest in Adams back when he was on The Bachelorette. The two started flirting on Twitter in 2016 but only made things official in late 2017. The happy couple had been in a long-distance relationship, since he lived in Nashville, Tennessee and she in Los Angeles, California, but took things to the next level in August 2018, when Adams moved in with Hyland.

In July 2019, Adams popped the question while on vacation in Fiji.

UFC star Conor McGregor has finally proposed to his long-time girlfriend of 12-years, Dee Devlin. The fighter put a ring on it on Sunday, August 9, which happened to be Devlin’s birthday too!

Taking to Instagram to announce his exciting news, McGregor posted a picture of himself and Devlin cuddled up, showing off the new engagement ring.

“What a birthday, my future wife,” wrote McGregor.

The pair share two children together, a three-year-old son Conor Junior, and a one-year-old daughter Croia.

McGregor has been open and public about his relationship with Devlin, and often credits her for his success in life. In an interview with MMA Fighting, he said: “My girlfriend has been there since the start. She has helped me throughout this career. If it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.

For me to be able to take her out of work, give her everything she’s ever wanted and to travel the world with her fills me with pride. It keeps me going. We’ve been together a long time. She’s been through it all with me.”

They started dating in 2007 after meeting in a nightclub, and they have been inseparable ever since.

For their happy news, congratulations poured in for the couple. Several other UFC stars including Holly Holm sent their well wishes. Conor’s father Tony, sister Erinn, and niece Taylor all sent their love too, and so did Devlin’s sister Sarah, who wrote, “My heart is so full for these two.”

    Congrats to the happy couple!

Cape Town’s own olympic athlete Wayde van Niekerk made headlines across the country when he became the 400m record holder. He achieved a lifetime dream that day. It seems that the runner is set on making all of his wishes come true, as he found and married the girl of his dreams too. We take a look at his wedding, marriage, and more.

In December 2016, the Olympian got engaged to his girlfriend of 3-years, Chesnay Campbell. Taking to Twitter with excitement, van Niekerk posted a video showing off the ring, with the words “SHE SAID YES” written in bold across the footage.

Shortly thereafter, Van Niekerk announced that he would be concentrating on plans for his wedding, and shared no other details other than the fact that he was very excited to marry the love of his life.

In October 2017, the pair tied the knot at the Bloemfontein Botanical Gardens. They had over 200 guests join them, including other sporting starts such as Siya Kolisi, Caster Semenya, and TV personality Siv Ngesi.

In a tweet Van Niekerk said, “Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you,” accompanied by a black and white picture of him with his new wife on their wedding day.

“So blessed to start this next adventure with the girl of my dreams!” he said.

Chesnay detailed how the pair planned their wedding.

On the decor, she said: “When it came to picking a wedding planner, everyone suggested one person, @tonypengofficial. I’ve never been the girl who dreamt and planned her wedding since she was 10 years old & Wayde kinda just told me that I can do whatever I want to, as long as he can pick his own suit. ? I met with Tony and told him all I want is for it to be white and as long as everything is pretty, he can do whatever he wants to,” she explained.

“The end result was everything I didn’t know I needed. He kept it clean and classy. Simplicity at its best. We didn’t want the over-the-top “celebrity” wedding because that’s not who we are. We wanted our guest to be able to communicate without having big plants & decor in their faces. We wanted it to feel intimate and comfy. It was the details in the simplicity that made it the most beautiful night ever.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpTshSPHLAg/?utm_source=ig_embed

About the reception, Chesnay said, “I can’t say anything else but that our reception was the biggest party ever. Having all our close friends and family around us made it very beautiful and super fun. Everyone danced. I mean, EVERYONE danced.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpcfA6enYEH/?utm_source=ig_embed

On the wedding day as a whole, Chesney said it was beautiful. “An ice cold day at the end of October ( I’ve always wanted an autumn wedding and God listens to his children so I will take all the blame, sorry) But I’d do it all over again even with the cold weather. What’s a cold breeze if you’re marrying your best friend?”

South African politician Mmusi Maimane has reached a special milestone with wife Natalie. The pair have been married for an incredible 15 years.

Taking to social media, Maimane expressed his love and appreciation for his wife.

The pair met at the Community Ministries church in Muldersdrift, north of Johannesburg, although neither can remember much of their first encounter. They remained friends for years before beginning a romantic relationship. Within six months of dating, Mmusi popped the question and the pair wed on August 6, 2005, at the church where they met.
They had their white wedding on the Saturday and a traditional wedding on the Sunday, during which Natalie was given a new name from her in-laws – Rethabile, which means ‘happy family’ in Setswana.

The pair have two children together: Kgalaletso and Daniel.

A story filled with plot twists, self-discovery, and new beginnings, Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli’s love story is one that is almost too magical to be real. Yet it is. The pair met in 2012, with a meet-cute that out-cutes them all. We take a look at their tale, from then until now.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvb-CgWAXuy/

Wiley, an up and coming actress at the time, met her now-wife, Morelli, a screenwriter, in December 2012, on the set of Orange Is The New Black. Morelli wrote episode six of season one, which saw her visiting the set to meet the actors.

At the time, Morelli was married to a man. Wiley admitted to Out Magazine, that she thought Morelli was gay and would constantly try to find ways to chat to her. In the same interview, Morelli said that she had started questioning her sexuality after being in the writers’ room for this show.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BBL9eHHo4AQ/

“On set it’s a bunch of women, so everyone’s hugging and touching. It’s a very affectionate place. I’d fallen into this alternate universe, but I thought I’d go home and it’d disappear. But Samira was still so present for me,” said Morelli.

“I found out she was married — I assumed to a woman. It was a little dagger in my heart. I remember this whirlwind of me falling in love in those four days. I was also bartending, and I told my coworkers. They said I was crazy. She went back to L.A., and I thought I’d forget about her, but that Christmas I found myself talking to my mother about it,” explained Wiley.

“I never talk to her about anything like this, but I was completely open about how lost I felt. That was the real indicator for me: me talking to my mother about Lauren. Because Lauren was finding out who she was, I became a confidant to her. We’d talk on the phone, me sharing my own coming-out story and her talking about things she was discovering.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpm1iuGFBHC/

After having Samira as her confidant, and going to couples therapy with her husband which turned out to be futile, Lauren separated from her husband and started dating Samira.

A year into their relationship, the pair took a trip to Thailand, and they both admit that it was a terrible failure. They bickered the entire time. However, they also say that the trip helped them learn about each other, and realise that no matter what, they still wanted to be together.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BH-IJcjDMNL/

Soon after, the pair took another trip, this time to Palm Springs. While packing for the trip, Lauren proposed.

“That day, I wanted to be good and get my packing done. She got home and was just not ready to go, and I was confused. She asked me to sit next to her. Then she got me up, and we started dancing together, and she pulled a ring from behind the couch. Lauren has been married before, so I wanted her to tell me she was ready, her to be the one to propose,” Wiley explains of the proposal.

“I didn’t know she was as ready as she was. I was completely shocked. I was crying uncontrollably and kept backing away from her. I asked her after, “Who knows about this?” and she said, “Oh, everyone. Your parents know.” We didn’t tell anyone else for a few days. That was really important to us — to have some time where it was just ours.”

The pair tied the know on March 25, 2017 in Palm Springs. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the event began with an outdoor ceremony, officiated by Samira’s parents, and led to a grand entrance by the couple, at the reception with Justin Bieber’s “Baby” playing as they made their way in.

Both Samira and Lauren donned custom Christian Siriano ensembles, and guests were served dinner under colourful garlands and strands of lights.

Shona was there to drop off mutual friends meeting Connie’s sister Lorato. As he sipped on a glass of water, Connie came out out of her room to greet him and their love story began.

“Hands down, it was love at first sight. She’d never admit, but. That’s how it was for me,” Shona told Destiny Magazine.

It was a whirlwind romance for the pair. After only two months of dating, they tied the knot in a traditional wedding. Their white wedding was held soon after, and appeared on the December 2001 cover of Drum.

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are owning up to their past mistakes. In an interview, Reynolds apologised on behalf of the couple for hosting their 2012 wedding at Boone Hall, a former plantation in South Carolina.

Speaking to Fast Company, Reynolds said the decision is “something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for.

“It’s impossible to reconcile. What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy. Years ago we got married again at home—but shame works in weird ways. A giant f*cking mistake like that can either cause you to shut down or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn’t mean you won’t fuck up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”

Original coverage of their wedding glazed over the venue, but the controversy began in 2018 when Reynolds tweeted out his support of the Black Panther film, which had a majority black cast. Many accused Reynolds of being hypocritical for supporting black people in public but marrying at a venue that has such racist connotations.

This is the first time the pair have directly spoke about the controversy. Earlier in 2020 at the start of the protests that began after the death of George Floyd, they posted on Instagram  “We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is. We want to educate ourselves about other people’s experiences and talk to our kids about everything, all of it … especially our own complicity.”

They also announced they had donated $200 000 to the NAACP legal defense fund.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CA3523apMYB/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The wedding industry has also since acknowledged the dark history of American plantations. In December 2019, Pinterest, The Knot Worldwide, Brides and Zola announced that they would be making changes to their platform that would restrict all references to plantations, as well as any language attempting to romanticise these locations as wedding venues.

This move is in response to a campaign led by racial justice organisation, Color of Change, who argued that the wedding industry was glamourising and capatalising sites of human rights atrocities.

Many plantations in America thrived off slave labour and became places of human rights abuse for the people forced into these demeaning positions. As such, they’ve become painful reminders of a dark and sordid history for many African Americans who descended from such slaves.

Sean Penn is a married man yet again. The famed actor secretly said ‘I do’ to actress Leila George.

In an interview on the Late Night with Seth Myers show, Penn confirmed his recent nuptials by raising his left hand and showing off his wedding band when asked whether reports of a secret wedding were true.

“We did a COVID wedding,” he told Myer. “By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom, we were at the house, my two children and her brother, and we did it that way.”

Penn and George have been together for two years, reports Vanity Fair. Rumours of their undercover nuptials began when philanthropist Irena Meavoy posted a since-deleted Instagram post congratulating them on tying the knot.
This is the third marriage for 59-year-old Penn and the first for George. He was previously married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989, then actress Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010. He shares two children with Wright: Dylan (29) and Hopper (26).

Somizi Mhlongo and Mohale Motaung have gone down in history as having two of the most extravagent weddings South Africa has ever seen. This iconic couple has dominated gossip columns since they came together, and keep us constantly entertained.

They have also become beautiful examples of love, and have inspired many to be their true selves. Here’s how this iconic South African couple came to be.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B9teEzsh9SA/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Idols judge Somizi met actor and businessman Mohale in 2017 at a book signing for Somizi’s book Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit – The Somizi Mhlongo Story.

“I knew from the minute I saw him. He thought I was joking when I told him because he was at my book signing,” Mhlongo told Sowetan Live. “With everyone I was signing SM, but when he came I signed ‘thank you for your support, dear future husband’.

“He laughed it off and two months later, we met for dinner. We met at 8pm and the date ended at 3am. We went through eight bottles of champagne and we have never been apart since then. He slept at my house. I knew then that this is the man I’m going to marry,” Mhlongo says.

Their relationship has not been without its fair share of controversy. Initially, the 22-year age difference surprised fans.

Many also criticised Mohale of faking his love for Somizi for fame. When Mohale appeared on Somizi’s reality show Living the dream with Somizi, viewers said Mohale seemed disinterested and unaffectionate towards his partner. The couple also faced infidelity rumours when Mohale was allegedly caught with another man.

On March 10, 2018 Somizi popped the question to Mohale at Pont des Arts, the ‘lock bridge’ in Paris that overlooks the Eiffel Tower. Of course, Mohale said yes.

The pair tied the knot in what many believe was the wedding of the decade in 2019, first with a traditional wedding in 2019 and then a white wedding in early 2020.

For their traditional wedding, the couple wore matching outfits and made multiple changes throughout the day. Their first look was designed by Gert Johan Coetzee, who was inspired by a North African theme.

A host of local celebrities were in attendance, including Bonang Matheba, Casper Nyovest, Kelly Khumalo, Lerato Kganyago, Pearl Thusi, Julius Malema, and Thando Thabethe.

According to Liquid Image Consulting, the creative team behind the wedding, the pair had a particular dress code for guests. “Dresscode: #Somhale wanted to showcase African Tradition and they personally selected a region from Africa for each guest detailing what they should wear and sent extensive dress code mood boards to ensure everyone stayed on theme!!” they wrote in an Instagram post.

Not one to be outdone, Somizi made sure their second wedding was even more lavish than their traditional wedding of 2019. Their extravagant white wedding on Thursday, January 30 was attended by celebs like Minnie Dlamini-Jones, Casper Nyovest, Khanyi Mbau, DJ Zinhle, Shimza, Lerato Sengadi, Thando Thabethe, Ayanda Thabethe and Bonang Matheba. Guests were instructed to wear white and red-bottom shoes.

According to reports, Somizi had three outfit changes, each of which were accessorised with different Christian Louboutin red-bottom shoes. Celebrity designer Gert-Johan Coetzee was at the helm of at least one of these looks.

Their nuptials were captured in all their glory in a 4-part special on Showmax, which broke viewing records and became the most streamed show when it premiered in February.

The pair had planned a third wedding in Italy this year, but had to cancel plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s clear that there is a lot of love in this couple. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
