The last connection one would make with neon is wedding decor, right? The world is a strange place at the moment so why not throw caution to the wind? Neon wedding decor is a very underrated trend that is worth shedding light on.

We’re not talking paint on the ceilings, glow sticks and lava lamps, so don’t worry.

Contrarily, neon can be incorporated in subtle ways. From a cascading colour palette to subtle decorations, neon can really make your wedding decor pop.

If you’re feeling extra or brave, kick the neon up a gear and really draw attention to your decor. Keep to a colour theme though, don’t go full 90s neon.

Italian wedding dress designer, Pietro Demita, protested Italy’s COVID-19 ban on large gatherings like weddings by burning his entire 2020-2021 collection.

Demita is the owner of Diamond Couture in Lecce, Italy and he has not taken the ban on weddings lightly.

Speaking to The Observer, Demita said: “I set my creations alight, the fruits of my talent and my artistry, to send a strong message. Because, even if I hadn’t, the economic and political decisions imposed during the coronavirus crisis would have sent them up in smoke anyway.”

While there are no images or footage of the dress-burning, Demita said the ordeal is representative of what the wedding industry is going through.

He spoke to a local publicaiton, La Gazzetta Del Mezzogiorno and explained that the wedding industry as a whole is at risk of demise due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

He explained that he burnt his dresseses because the government’s decisions have “set fire to our future and our dreams.”

Michael Watson’s plan to propose to his girlfriend were foiled by the nationwide lockdown. According to Good Things Guy, with a ring that wasn’t yet finished, Watson had to improvise.

Watson’s engagement plans went ahead without the original ring. Instead, he decided to craft an engagement ring at home using natural clay. He then set off to mould the ring without his soon-to-be fiancé Lara de Stadler finding out. Speaking to Good Things Guy, Watson said: “Once I had the final ring, I took the dried clay and used sandpaper and sanded down the sides to get everything to a final thickness. I whittled it down from the rough shape into something more refined. Cleaned up all the edges and made it nice and neat.”

Once he had the correct shape and size, the drying process began. He would stealthily move the ring from place to place, so that it could dry without being discovered. Once the ring was dry, Watson needed to paint it.

He explained to Good Things Guy that their favourite colour is teal so he put a paint set that de Stadler had given him for Christmas to good use. After a few colour trial runs, he managed to mix the desired teal colour. He then left the ring to dry and sealed it with clear nail polish, swiped from de Stadler’s stash.

Watson decided to propose after the couple had streamed Sunday Mass, after four days of preparing the perfect ring. Watson ensured the pair dressed in their Sunday best for both occasions.

Watson proposed while the final Hymn was being sung. de Stadler was in awe of her fiancé’s efforts to make the moment as special as possible. She said: ““It was the perfect time, we had music, we were in our happy space, it was a special space, it was the nicest place in the house with the light streaming in from the garden, so yeah, it was as special as we could make it under the circumstances.”

If you’re living your best eco-friendly life, then a wedding venue that suits your lifestyle is a must. Although in South Africa it may be difficult to find a 100% self-sufficient, off the grid, carbon emission-free venue that also has a glam location, there are other options. Most of these options do require some flexibility, though. If you realistically want a sustainable wedding venue, you’re going to have to make it an outdoor affair.

    A garden

If you or someone you know and love dearly has a gorgeous garden that can host a wedding, you’re sorted. Having a wedding in a garden gives you endless opportunities to create the setting of your dreams. Picture it: Strings and strings of solar powered fairy lights overhead, battery powered candles line the tables, in the distance, a bar serving guests drinks with paper straws, a solar-powered generator silently powering the entire event. There’s not a scrap of plastic in site and all your bins double into compost heaps. Even better? Have your wedding in the early afternoon so that you can take full advantage of all the warm and natural light. All is right with the world. Ps. we know the house which this garden belongs to may not be off the grid, but we forgive you.

    A forest

Yes this may seem a bit far fetched, but think of Bella and Edward’s wedding in Breaking Dawn, just without the werewolf-vampire drama. A wedding in a forest, surrounded by nature is an authentic way to celebrate your wedding. Everyone is so set on the popular trends but don’t you want to look back on your wedding day and be glad you went a different route? Add some authenticity to your day by opting for a wildly different venue. There are a number of forest wedding venues across South Africa, where you can say “I do” to the sweet sounds of song birds overhead. Some venues may include an indoor reception area so you can still have the best of both worlds.

The forest knows of your love. It has heard your laughter, shared in your joy, felt your excitement and reveled in your love. It enjoys your moments together, just soaking it all in. It never forgets, only grows more lush and alive as love grows. The breathtaking nature scenes of Nikki and Sean’s love story captured by Art Photo. ° We love that our entire venue is surrounded by nature! ?? ° ° #overbergwedding #deuijlenes #oldbarnvenue #forestwedding #barnandforestwedding #nature #forestmagic #weddingstory #weddings2019 #realweddings #reallove #brideandgroom #weddinginspiration #beautifuldetails #foreverlove #weddingday #prettythings #awakenyoursoul #bestdaysofourlives #crazyadventures

    A farm venue

Yes technically this is a four-walled structure but not everyone wants an outdoor wedding. With a farm wedding venue, you get to enjoy the great outdoors and the great indoors. A classic, rustic mix is ensured with this style of venue. You get all the creature comforts of a traditional venue, with some wild Mother Nature thrown into the mix. Either your ceremony or reception area will be open-air with the other under a structured roof. A big body of water, manicured lawns and rose gardens make up the perfect farm venue feel.

Weddings across the globe are being postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. One American couple refused to let the COVID-19 pandemic get in the way of their nuptials.

Meryl Epstein and Mike Simmons from New York have been self-isolating in the Florida Keys since March, according to Insider.

The couple who met through a dating app used another online platform to celebrate their wedding. The couple spoke to Insider and explained what their original wedding plans were and how these were foiled.

Simmons said: “We’ve got lots of friends who are artists and performers, and the idea was to bring a bunch of those people together in our New York City wedding.

“That kinda got switched around when everything in the world changed.”

Epstein explained that the wedding was intended to be casual and non-traditional and that the couple were scouting rooftop venues in the Big Apple.

“We were looking at more of that kind of loungy vibe, looking at different rooftops and things like that. We wanted it to be very New York and very intimate,” she said.

“Obviously our plans had to shift with the current state of events right now, with COVID-19.”

On a holiday to the Florida Keys the couple decided to rather extend their stay and self-isolate from there. The money that would have gone into the wedding has been used to finance their stay. The couple also settled on hosting a virtual wedding rather than cancelling or postponing their plans.

Simmons explained: “It was a decision to kind of rethink how we were going to make this happen in 2020, and that’s when the idea started to come up that we can do it using technology.”

The couple had also discussed the idea of eloping. They experienced the best of both worlds with their virtual wedding: a destination wedding with all their family and friends.

Their virtual wedding also meant that their guest list could include 150 people, over 22 different time zones.

The couple planned every detail as meticulously as possible. The virtual wedding, which was held over Zoom, included a dress code, speeches, live music and assigned “seating”. There was also a soundcheck, rehearsals and a “social distancing photo session” with a UK-based photographer over FaceTime beforehand.

Epstein explained that planning a virtual wedding is just as stressful as the real deal.

The couple made use of Zoom’s breakout rooms as their wedding tables. Each “table” was named after a different location in New York City. The couple had guests spend time together in smaller groups in assigned rooms after the ceremony. Guests were also given the chance to join in on the bride and groom’s room.

A photographer went from each table(breakout room) taking photos and screenshots of the occasion. The couple requested that instead of gifts, their guests donate to a New York based non-profit, City Harvest, which is feeding New Yorkers in need.

A couple in Canada had to cancel their wedding due to the coronavirus outbreak. Instead of cancelling it all together, they decided to have their ceremony at home.

Anastasija and Josh spoke to Insider and explained: “We got our decor, we got our party favors, we got our music, we got our DJ, photographer, everything,” said Anastasija. “Everything was planned until about three weeks before our wedding.”

    “And then, COVID,” Josh said.

Anastasija’s brother and sister-in-law, who were supposed to provide the decorations, got stuck in Europe as borders began to close. Other guests also had to cancel due to travel restrictions. Then gatherings of 50 people or more were banned, leaving the couple with few options.

All plans had to be changed and so the couple decided to let their 135 guests know that the celebrations would be a no-go. Instead, their ceremony would be held at home. Only family were to attend and Josh’s best friend, his best man.

Anastasija explained: “We can’t even express how hard it was to message all of our friends that we’ve been so excited to have at our wedding to be like, ‘We’re not only moving the date, but you guys can’t come’. It was heartbreaking. But we came to the conclusion that we could either postpone or we could just get married.”

Their makeshift wedding took place at Josh’s parents house, with white draping for decor. Josh said that the wedding felt very intimate.

“It felt very personal and very intimate. What do you really need when you get married? You don’t need all the trappings, all the decorations, all these things. You just really need family, and maybe a few close friends, and that’s what we had.”

The couple weren’t able to cancel their limo and so rode in style to a location away from the house to take their wedding photos.

Josh’s best man told the couple to look outside and that’s when the surprise was revealed. “I start seeing a friend of mine, and another friend of mine, and another friend. All of these familiar faces from church are lining the street, all in their cars. We just broke down,” said Josh.

“They were honking, cheering, yelling congratulations. Josh and I were shocked. We were crying, we couldn’t believe this was happening. Seeing them on the street, celebrating our day with us, made it so magical,” said Anastasija.

Vegan wine is fast becoming a sensation in South Africa. People are seeking out ethically made wines in exchange for their hard earned money. Providing guests with vegan wine on your wedding day will not only tantalise their tastebuds, it will also teach them about the incredible variety that is available in South Africa.

    What classifies wine as vegan?

Vegan wines are made without animal products. During the typical winemaking process, the wine is filtered through substances called fining agents. These are used to remove unwanted flavours or colours, protein, yeast, cloudiness and other organic matter. Typical fining agents are animal-based. These, according to PETA include

    – Blood and bone marrow,

    – Casein (milk protein),

    – Chitin (fiber from crustacean shells),

    –  Egg albumen (derived from egg whites),

    – Fish oil

    – Gelatin (protein from boiling animal parts),

    – Isinglass (gelatin from fish bladder membranes).

Vegan winemakers will leave the particles to sink naturally to the bottom of the wine or otherwise they will use fining products like bentonite (type of clay) or pea protein – both of which are non-animal fining products, to remove the organic matter. Voila! Your wine is vegan.

Some delicious vegan wines that are produced in South Africa include:

    White:

    – Franschhoek Cellar La Cotte Mill Chenin Blanc 2019

    – Franschhoek Cellar Statue de Femme Sauvignon Blanc 2019
