Celebrities, they’re fickle beings. While some famous pairings were built to last despite the Hollywood machine, others don’t make it that long.

We’ve seen quite a few interesting celebrity marriages over the years. Similarly, there are a few that are shocking to hear about. Here are a few celebrity marriages from yesteryear you might be surprised by.

    Richard Gere & Cindy Crawford

A Hollywood romance for the ages, it seemed like a match made in heaven when screen icon Richard Gere and rising supermodel Cindy Crawford linked up in 1988. Crawford was 22 at the time, and Gere 39-years-old. On a whim, they tied the knot in 1991 at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. However, the marriage only lasted for four years and the pair ended things in 1995. Years later, Crawford would explain their age gap as the main reason for their split.

    Renée Zellweger & Kenny Chesney
Actress Renee Zellwegger and country musician Kenny Chesney surprised the world when they tied the knot back in 2005 after a short 5-month romance. Unfortunately, the romance was not meant to be. Four months later, the pair split, weirdly citing ‘fraud’ as the reason for divorce.

    Kim Kardashian & Damon Thomas

While her marriages to basketball player Kris Humphries and rapper Kanye West have received much coverage, many often forget that Kim Kardashian has actually been married three times. Back in 2000, a 19-year-old Kim said ‘I do’ to her first husband, music producer Damon Thomas. Thomas was reportedly mentally and physically abusive, and caused a rift between Kim Kardashian and her family. The pair split in 2004.

    Nicolas Cage & Patricia Arquette

When actors Cage and Arquette met at a deli back in the late 80s, he asked her to create a list of ways he could prove his dedication and worthiness to her. The seemingly-impossible list included J.D. Salinger’s rare autograph and a black orchid, which Cage set off to complete. His intensity scared Arquette, and it wasn’t until 1995 that they met at the same deli by chance and wed two weeks later atop a cliff in California. 9 months into the marriage they called it quits, although it took until 2000 for the divorce to be finalised.

    Jennifer Garner & Scott Foley

Before he played Jake Ballard on Scandal, Scott Foley was more well-known for his role in popular TV show Felicity. He met future wife Jennifer Garner (before she hit it big) when she guest-starred as a love interest for his character back in 1998 and they fell in love. They tied the knot in 2000 but split in 2003. Many argue that Garner’s career-defining role in Alias catapaulted her stardom and put strain on the relationship.

    Pamela Anderson and Kidd Rock
The Baywatch star met Kidd Rock in 2001, they fell in love and got engaged in 2002 but then broke up. They then got back together and married in 2006 during a symbolic ceremony on a yacht, for which she famously wore a white bikini and sailors hat. Unfortunately, the marriage was not meant to be. The pair split in 2007. In an interview, Borat actor Sacha Baron Cohen claims Anderson’s appearance in the 2006 comedy film contributed to strain in her marriage and led to their divorce.

    Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johannson
Now married to Blake Lively, it’s easy to forget that Ryan Reynolds once had a very different starlet wife. Reynolds and Scarlet Johannson were fiercely private about their relationship, and little is known about how and when they met. They secretly married in 2007, although there are no public photos of their union. The pair divorced in 2010. Johannson has since explained that she was very young when they tied the knot, and romanticised marriage but was unprepared for the reality of it.

It’s hard to believe that there was once a time that Bradley Cooper was the lesser-known partner in a relationship. Back in 2006, before The Hangover made him a household name, the actor was married to actress Jennifer Esposito, who was relishing in fame after winning an Oscar for her role in Crash. However, they filed for divorce in 2007 after 4 months of marriage, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.

“Instead, Jay decided to bring Vietman to Jeannie with a surprise quarantine date night in his home filled with Vietnamese food and decor,” said Mai’s rep.

Of course, people are tremendously happy for them and congratulations flooded in on her Instagram post. Co-hosts at The Real were also ecstatic for Mai. The Real congratuated Mai on their Instagram page too, posting a picture of the happy couple.

Gwyneth Paltrow and hubby Brad Falchuck tied the knot in 2018, but the actress recently posted a never-before-seen picture from her wedding for good friend Robert Downey Jnr’s birthday.

Paltrow captioned the picture of her looking surprised at something he said, saying “Here he is, making a toast at our wedding, during which his humor elicited my usual look of pure joy/shock whenever he is near. Binnelanders actor and Survivor SA winner of 2011, Hykie Berg has said ‘I do’ just before lockdown descended upon the nation.

His now wife Gerridene, a lawyer, was radiant and the epitome of joy on their big day. The pair tied the knot on the Serengeti golf estate in Kempton Park.

Hykie lovingly teases that he really does deserve to marry her by now, since he has proposed to her seven times! Every time, Gerridene found a reason to say no, including that he hasn’t asked her parents yet, he hadn’t bought a ring yet or the time simply wasn’t right. Hykie was adamant, however, and kept asking. In June of 2019, after being together for 10 months, she finally said yes!

Gerridene wore a romantic beaded white dress with a train and thin shoulder straps.

Self-isolating has gotten to us all, even celebrities. While at home, John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen are finding inventive ways to keep their two children entertained. They hosted a wedding for daughter Luna’s stuffed animals, Chloe and Nosh.

Chloe and Nosh said ‘I do’ in a beautiful beachside ceremony. Luna walked the pair down the aisle and naturally, Tiegen officiated the ceremony. Luckily for us, the wedding was livestreamed on Instagram Live so we could all virtually attend.

“Thank you for gathering here today on this very special day,” Teigen said as she officiated the ceremony. “It’s a beautiful day. Well deserved in what has become 26 weeks of an incredible relationship.”

“It was unexpected at first, as there were many different animals in the house,” she continued. “But who knew that Chloe and Nosh would get along so well. They’ve loved each other since the first second they laid eyes one another and they’ve never spent a night apart.”

John Legend serenaded the newlyweds during their first dance with Selena Gomez’s “Hands to Myself”.

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell said ‘I do’ in a small ceremony on March 25. Despite planning their big day for over a year, all their plans had to change amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Irwin shared the news on social media, explaining that the wedding was a small ceremony at the Australia Zoo where they all live, with no guests in attendance beside her mother and brother.

“March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe,” Irwin wrote on her Instagram page.

“We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.”

The wedding was a meaningful moment for her family. Irwin’s mother helped her get ready, her brother walked her down the aisle and they had a special tribute to her father, Steve Irwin.

“Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this – stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!”
