Born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, Judy Garland was a performer all her life. She has graced the silver screen in various iconic films and delighted audiences the world over with her magical voice. Although she passed away 50 years ago, she is still much beloved for her contribution to American cinema.

Interestingly, her love was even more dramatic than the characters she portrayed on screen. The iconic Wizard of Oz actress had married five times in her lifetime, giving Elizabeth Taylor and her eight marriages worthy competition. Let’s take a look at the men she loved over the decades.

    Husband 1: David Rose (1941)

Garland met British-born composer and bandleader David Rose when she was 18-years-old and he 31-years-old, and they quickly became engaged. At the time, she was riding on a career-high following her Oscar-winning breakout role in The Wizard of Oz. Her mother and production studio she was under contract with, MGM, objected to their marriage over concerns Rose would tarnish Garland’s pristine, youthful image. Rose was still married to actress and singer Martha Raye at the time.

However, Garland ignored them and married Rose a year later in Las Vegas on July 27, 1941 after his divorce was finalised. The couple did not have an easy relationship. They reportedly had very different personalities, and Garland’s domineering mother created much tension. Rose, Garland’s mother and MGM reportedly forced Garland to have a secret abortion for fears that a baby would ruin her career. Secret abortions were common for actresses of this period.

The strain on their marriage could not be fixed and by 1944, the couple divorced.

    Husband 2: Vincente Minnelli (1945)

In 1944, Garland began dating American stage director and film director Vincent Minelli whilst filming Meet Me in St. Louis, which Minelli directed. The film has since become MGM’s highest selling to date. Minelli was nearly 20 years Garland’s senior, and is said to have brought out maturity and onscreen elegance in the star that she desperately craved after playing many teenage roles.

Minelli and Garland were a powerhouse, and continued to work together for various MGM films. The pair married in June 1945, and MGM co-founder Louis B. Mayer himself gave the bride away. In 1946, the couple welcomed daughter Liza Minelli, who would go on to become an international star just like her mother.

Trouble began for the couple after daughter Liza’s birth. Garland suffered from postpartum depression and was hospitalised at two different psychiatric clinics from a nervous breakdown after she returned to work a year after giving birth. Garland had also become more dependent on drugs, which she first began taking as a child upon her mother’s insistence to help maintain her weight and give her more energy to perform. She had also attempted suicide multiple times, and recieved scathing reporting from the press for alleged affairs. Garland and Minelli’s collaborations came to an end when she insisted he be removed as director for Easter Parade. The couples divorce was finalised in 1951, and she was released from her MGM contract.

    Husband 3: Sid Luft (1952)

Garland’s longest marriage was to movie producer Sid Luft, who she had known since the 1930s. She began dating Luft after her relationship was Minelli ended in 1951, and he became her manager on a mission to revitalise her career.

Early into their relationship, Garland discovered she was pregnant but felt pressured to have another abortion to preserve her career. The couple managed to get through it together and married in 1952. They had daughter Lorna later that same year and son Joey in 1955. In 1954, the actress reached career success yet again with her iconic role in A Star is Born, which garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

However, throughout this high, Garland and Luft were having many marital problems. Garland continued to suffer from depression, drug use and alcoholism, and Luft reportedly also had issues with alcohol. Garland sued for divorce in 1963, citing mental cruelty as the reason. The actress claims Luft would become physically abusive towards her when he drank. She filed for divorce multiple times but the pair kept getting back together. They finally divorced in 1965.

    Husband 4: Mark Herron

Garland met actor and tour manager Mark Herron in 1964 when he produced her joint shows with daughter Liza at the London Palladium. At the time, however, Garland was still married to Luft. They married soon after her divorce was finalised in 1965 at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas.

This short-lived marriage was not meant to be. They separated after 5 months and divorced in 1967. Garland testified that Herron was physically abusive towards her, which Herron claims was in self-defense..

    Credit: Pinterest

    Husband 5: Mickey Deans (1969)

Garland’s fifth and final husband was American musician and entrepreneur, Mickey Deans. The pair reportedly met at a hotel in New York City when Deans, 12 years Garland’s junior, was asked by a mutual friend to deliver prescription drugs to the actress. He had to pretend to be a doctor, as Garland’s two youngest children were present.

The pair dated for three years and married in 1969 in London. At the time, Garland’s career and personal life was at an all-time-low. Her physical and mental health had deteriorated from her persistent drug use. She was also in debt and felt immense pressure to continue performing.

Unfortunately a mere three months after their wedding, Deans discovered Garland’s dead body on June 22, 1969. She had died from an accidental overdose just 12 days before her 47th birthday.

Royal weddings are all about who is who and what they are wearing. While the bride is the main event, royal wedding guests are also judged for the beautiful, tailored outfits (and hats!) they show off on the day.

Here are some of the best dressed royal wedding guests throughout history.

    Meghan Markle

The newest entry into the British royal family Megan has fit right in among the royals and their incredible, sophisticated fashion. One of her best looks was shown off when she attended the wedding of  Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. In a nod to her own wedding, the outfit was designed by her wedding dress designer, Givenchy.

    Kitty Spencer

Diana was known for her beauty and it seems it runs in the family. Kitty Spencer, her niece, wore a beautiful emerald green dress with flowers a painted long the front from Dolce and Gabbana to Meghan and Harry’s wedding . Simply elegant.

    Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton has been praised for her sophisticated style and this is never more on show than at the royal weddings. For Princess Eugenie’s royal nuptials she, like Meghan, also wore a dress from her wedding dress designer- Alexander McQueen. The pink outfit and matching fascinator were fun but not too eccentric.

    Priyanka Chopra

Looking like she was about to board the Titanic, Priyanka Chopra was a showstopper at Meghan and Harry’s wedding. With the custom lavender suit from Vivienne Westwood to the Philip Treacy hat, she caught many cameras attention.

    Cara Delevingne

It is not often men make as much of a splash as David Beckham did at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. The ray Dior Homme custom-made morning suit fit perfectly and had Beckham stealing the spotlight from his wife.

    Beatrice Borromeo

Bucking the tradition and going with a tailored pantsuit was an inspired look by Beatrice as she attended Prince Felix Of Luxembourg and Claire Lademacher’s wedding. She could have stopped there but instead decided to really bowl everyone over by topping it with the perfect, unique headpiece.

    Serena Williams

Known recently for her controversial outfits on the court, Serena Williams looked royal perfection in the pink Versace dress and matching pink heels as she arrived at Harry and Meghan’s wedding.

    Princess Diana

Diana was nothing if not a fashion icon and always stood out. Her polka dot ensemble to the wedding of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew was quintessentially 80s but proves that she was a fashion icon unafraid of taking risks.

    Karl Lagerfeld

He is a fashion designer so this isn’t a huge surprise. He amped up the standard male suit ensemble when we attended Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene’s weddings by adding studded gloves and a brooch to give the formal suit a more fashionable feel.

Queen Rania is one of the most beautiful royals in the world and she dresses accordingly. This white blouse tucked into a lavender skirt combination she wore to Crown Prince Felipe Of Spain and Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano’s  wedding is typical 2000s dynamic sophistication.

Wildlife conservation advocates Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell said ‘I do’ in a small ceremony at the Australia Zoo on March 25.

Now, Bindi has posted never-before-seen pictures of their big day on Instagram, saying: “Our wedding day. ❤️ Reflecting on these beautiful moments with the love of my life.”

Fans and followers were delighted, as the pictures include a close-up of the pair’s wedding rings.

Her engagement ring is a solitaire setting made from recycled rose gold and contains a lab-grown diamond. The single twisted pave band is, of course, nature inspired.

In a very traditional move, Powell gave her a separate wedding band too, forming a double band ring connected by the diamond.

Sex and The City actress Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick, famous for his role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on May 19. Parker celebrated their long-lasting love with a tribute in the form of a throwback.

The actress took to Instagram to share a black and white picture of the pair to mark the milestone they have reached together. Alongside the photo, Parker wrote: “May 19th, 2020 23 years. We’ve come a long way baby, X, SJ.”

Many congratulations poured in, including some from other celebrities such as Billy Eichner, Reese Witherspoon, and Adam Shankman who wrote an especially joyful message.  “Oh my goooddd!! Congrats!!! I remember it all like it was yesterday, including midnight wedding dress covert ops….what a wonderful time it was! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” he exclaimed.

Broadway was the beginning of both of their careers. In November 1991, Broderick directed a play for a theatre company which happened to be owned by Parker’s brothers.

At this time, Parker had just concluded a relationship with Robert Downey Jr. She was then introduced to Broderick by one of her brothers.

Broderick once implied that their first meeting was one-in-a-million, and unforgettable. “I do remember first meeting her,” Broderick told the YES Network. “I still remember very clearly seeing her walk down the street toward the movie theater…it’s very unique, because I wouldn’t remember most people the first time I saw them come down the street. [But] I remember it as clear as day.”

According to the New York Times, the pair had their first date around February 1, 1992 when Broderick finally had the guts to ask her out.

Broderick and Parker tied the knot on May 19, 1997, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Their ceremony was officiated by Broderick’s sister.

The happy couple have three children together, and their relationship has truly stood the test of time.

It seems like ages ago that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in a glamorous affair at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. The royal couple celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary yesterday at home with son Archie.

While it is not clear what the couple got up to to celebrate, royal biographer Omid Scobie claims that they had planned a quiet day at their Los Angeles home. They reportedly took the day off of work to spend time together as a family.

“The day will simply be quality time with one another and as a family. They’re not going to be doing any work and made sure they have no meetings or calls in the diary,” Scobie told Hapaars Bazzar.

“Like everyone else, they are in lockdown at the moment, so they will just be hanging out together at home,” says the source. “But it will still be a lovely day.”

Scobie also shared some new behind-the-scene images from the 2018 royal wedding.

The day off of work must be a welcomed one for the couple, who have been working from home on their various charity endeavours and the launch of their non-profit organisation, Archewell.

To mark their first anniversary last year, Prince Harry surprised Megan with a bespoke conflict-free diamond eternity band designed by Lorraine Schwartz, which featured the birthstones for himself, Megan and son Archie on the underside of the ring.

Metal singer Marilyn Manson and burlesque performer Dita von Teese seemed a strange romantic pairing, but that’s exactly what drew them to each other.

Both from middle America, the two had reinvented themselves into who they wanted to be. Born Heather Sweet from Michigan, Von Teese became one of the most famous burlesque performers in the world. Brian Warner of Canton, Ohio grew up to be the world-famous controversial and iconic rocker.

After a five-year relationship, the pair tied the knot in a private ceremony at home in Los Angeles in November 2005, then exchanged vows again in a more lavish event at a friend’s castle in Ireland a week later. Their unconventional nuptials were even captured in an iconic spread for Vogue magazine.

Their nuptials went on for several days, starting with a civil ceremony at Von Teese’s Los Angeles home. This location was chosen as many of the churches they approached were apprehensive of having Manson inside their venues, according to Vogue.

Von Teese wore a simple white Moschino suit, designed by the label’s then-creative director, Rosella Jardini for the low-key event. It was Von Teese’s vision to look like “a forties bride going to the courthouse to get hitched before going off to the war” that inspired the design. Manson wore a Dior Homme jacket, a Galliano shirt, and Moschino creepers.

Their formal ceremony was much more extravagent. Held at Ireland’s gothic-style Castle Gurteen,  the wedding was officiated by surrealist film director and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky. Gottfried Helnwein, the owner of the castle, stood as Manson’s best man. The wedding was attended by about 60 guests, including Lisa Marie Presley and Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark.

For the nuptials, Von Teese wore a striking royal purple silk tafetta gown designed by Vivienne Westwood that featured a custom corset for her a 17-inch waist. She accessorised with a tri-corned hat designed by Stephen Jones and custom Christian Louboutin shoes the designer had created just for her. John Galliano designed Manson’s black silk taffeta tuxedo for the big day.

Of course, the reception was as unconventional as the couple. The banquet table was lined with giant centerpieces of black and crimson rose and featured gold skull-shaped candles. The waitstaff all wore Moschino tailcoats and pipers, and serenaded guests.

In the days after the wedding, guests partook in skeet shooting, archery and falconry on the castle grounds.

Unfortunately, the pair divorced a year later. During an interview with Khloe Kardashian on the Kocktails with Khloe show, she explained that getting married ruined their relationship.

While they were not friends for a long time after their divorce, the pair are now amicable.

Basketball player Dennis Rodman has made many bizarre moves throughout his career. From his outlandish outfits to his close friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, nothing seems surprising for this iconic public figure.

Another strange moment from Rodman’s life? The time he reportedly married himself in a dress.

While promoting his memoir  “Bad As I Wanna Be” back in 1996, Rodman decided to experiment with cross-dressing. He arrived at a book signing in a horse-drawn carriage escorted by a bevy of tuxedo-clad women, while wearing a custom wedding dress made in France.

At six feet, seven inches, the basketball player caused quite a scene in his wedding dress.

The star then declared that he was bisexual and was marrying himself.

While it was just a publicity stunt, there is no denying that it was effective. His book topped the New York Times bestseller list and remained on it for 20 weeks.

What an iconic moment in celebrity history.

Project Runway judge, New York Times best-selling author Elaine Welteroth said ‘I do’ to musician Jonathan Singletary in a virtual block party wedding outside their New York apartment.

Elaine and Jonathan met at the young age of 12 through church, but it was only in 2013 when the pair would be reunited as adults that a romance began to blossom. They became engaged in 2016. Their wedding date, May 10, 2020, was chosen for its special numerical order:  5-10-20.

“There was so much symbolism in this sequence of numbers [5-10-20] that only come together once in a lifetime,” Elaine explains to Vogue. “Also, it fell on a Sunday—the day we met as kids and saw each other every week growing up. But it wasn’t just any Sunday, it would be Mother’s Day!”

They were meant to marry at a church friend’s home close to the church in Northern California where they first met. However, with the coronavirus pandemic, those plans were cancelled. Instead, they threw a “virtual quarantine wedding” on their stoop in Brooklyn.

Their friends and family all jumped in to make sure the new plan was a success. The stoop was decorated with a whimsical floral arch that framed the front door.

All 200 guests, even the ones attending via Zoom, were given a white dress code. The in-person guests followed social distancing protocols and were provided gloves and masks on-site in addition to white parasols, bubbles, seeds to plant flowers, and homemade brownies from Elaine’s mom’s family recipe in a gift bag.

The bride made her walk down the ‘aisle’ wearing a label-less dress she’s owned for years, and her mother’s wedding veil. She even did her own makeup in the backseat of a car.

The wedding was officiated via Zoom by Dr. Stanley Long, the founding pastor of South Bay Community Church, the couple’s home church in California.

Then, the virtual block party began. Each guest had been sent a playlist to join in on the party. Their friend also DJ’ed live for the guests.

Even though it wasn’t the wedding they had planned, it was still a special one because their loved ones were there and they could hold it on their original date.

She is a screen icon, a legend and a mystery. Decades after her death, Marilyn Monroe is still much-loved and revered by many. Considering her legendary sex-symbol status, it seems fitting to take a look into her relationships.

The blonde bombshell had been married three times in her short life. Let’s take a walk down memory lane…

    Husband 1: Jim Dougherty (1942)

A then-unknown 15-year-old Norma Jean Baker began dating Jim Dougherty, her 20-year-old neighbour in 1941. At the time, Monroe was living with Grace Goddard, a friend of her mother, Gladys, who was in and out of psychiatric facilities.

“They wanted to move back to [West] Virginia, and they couldn’t take Norma Jean,” Dougherty said in an interview. “She would have gone back to an orphanage or another foster home, so her foster mother suggested I marry her.

The pair married a few days after Monroe’s 16th birthday in 1942. Monroe wore a floor-length A-line dress with sheer long sleeves and a ruffled neckline. A few months into their marriage, Monroe was discovered while working at Radioplane Co when a photographer used her as a subject in a project of women working as part of the war effort.

She quickly became an in-demand model, causing a strain on her marriage as her career ambitions rose. The pair divorced in 1946.

    Husband 2: Joe DiMaggio

Her career quickly escalating, Monroe met world-class baseball player Joe DiMaggio in 1952. DiMaggio had seen a photo of the actress and asked the photographer to set them up on a date.

They tied the knot on 14 January, 1954 in an informal wedding ceremony at the San Francisco courthouse. For their nuptials, Monroe wore a dark brown skirt suit with a white fur collar and carried a small bunch of orchids. Upon her death, the suit was auctioned off in 1998, fetching a price of $33,350.

This relatively short marriage was also a turbulent one. Monroe had to cut their honeymoon in Japan short to perform for troops in Korea. DiMaggio became controlling of Monroe’s career, becoming a part of all her contract negotiations and restricting the roles she may accept. The pair divorced a mere 274 days after saying I do. Monroe cited “mental cruelty” as the reason for the divorce.

    Husband 3: Arthur Miller

Her third and final marriage was to famous playwright Arthur Miller, who she had met on set of the 1951 movie As Young As You Feel. Monroe wrote about the encounter in her diary, saying “Met a man tonight … It was, bam! It was like running into a tree. You know, like a cool drink when you’ve had a fever.” Monroe went on to marry DiMaggio, however, but they began a scandalous affair years later, while both were still finalising their divorces. At the time, the playwright was also under much scrutiny by the FBI under Joseph McCarthy for being an alleged communist sympathiser.

The pair wed on 29 June, 1956 at Westchester County Court in New York. They followed this up with a traditional Jewish ceremony on 1 July at the home of Millers’ Hollywood agent, Kay Brown, in which Monroe also converted to Judaism. Monroe wore a mid-length figure-hugging gown with ruched sleeves for the occasion.

Their marriage was one filled with ups and downs. Both were in the media for having highly publicised affairs, and Monroe suffered many miscarriages that took a toll on her physical and mental health. The pair quickly divorced after filming wrapped on The Misfits, the short story Miller wrote for Monroe.

Monroe passed away in 1962 at the young age of 36. She’s left behind an iconic legacy that will never be forgotten.
