Finding the perfect wedding guest outfit is often much easier during the warmer months. Lightweight dresses, open-toe shoes and breathable fabrics make getting dressed for a celebration fairly straightforward. Once autumn and winter arrive, however, there are a few more factors to consider. You’ll want to stay warm during the ceremony, photos and any outdoor moments, but you also don’t want to be so layered up that you’re uncomfortable once the dancing starts.

Fortunately, cold weather wedding guest outfits can be just as stylish as their summer counterparts. The key is choosing pieces that offer warmth, comfort and versatility throughout the day. Whether you’re always reaching for an extra layer or you’re the first person on the dance floor, these outfit ideas offer inspiration for every type of wedding guest.

For those who are always cold

A long-sleeved midi or maxi dress in a heavier fabric such as velvet, crepe or satin can provide extra warmth without compromising on elegance. Pair it with a tailored coat, closed-toe heels or knee-high boots for a polished look that works from ceremony to reception.

For guests who love the dance floor

Opt for a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress layered with a structured blazer, cropped jacket or sophisticated wrap. This allows you to stay comfortable during cooler parts of the day while giving you the option to remove a layer once the celebrations are in full swing.

    For the fashion-forward guest

Tailored trouser suits, matching co-ords and elegant jumpsuits continue to be popular alternatives to traditional dresses. These options offer a little more coverage for colder weather while creating a modern and effortlessly chic look.

For those who prefer timeless simplicity

A slip dress paired with a long coat remains a favourite for a reason. Add closed-toe heels, delicate jewellery and a clutch, and you’ll have a wedding guest outfit that feels refined without trying too hard.

If the wedding invitation asks for formal attire, know that this will be an elegant affair and you should dress accordingly. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to wear a tuxedo or something to that effect, however, you do have that option to if you would like.

    Men

A suit is mandatory with formal attire. Stick to a dark suit with a white shirt and tie. Pair this with dressy leather shoes and you are good to go. A tuxedo would not be inappropriate if you would like to wear one.

    Women

If you are planning on wearing a dress, it should be floor length. An evening pant suit or smart separates is also appropriate. Stick to neutral or dark tones. Heels would be the best shoe choice with this type of attire.

A semi-formal dress code is just above cocktail and below formal. The time and location of the wedding should help guide your outfit. If the wedding is in the evening, you should wear more structured clothing in darker shades, if it is in the day, wear light colours and fabrics.

    Men

Wear a suit and tie or a smart blazer with a button down shirt. Pair your clothing with a smart pair of leather shoes.

If the wedding invitation states ‘cocktail attire’ as the dress code, it means you are expected to wear sophisticated clothing that is neither too formal nor too casual. This means that you can play with the colours and accessories you choose to wear. Oftentimes, it can be tricky to figure out what to wear. Don’t worry we’ve got you covered.

    Men

Stick to wearing a dark suit with either a white or colour shirt, or a suit jacket and slacks. You can accessorise with a fun tie or pocket square in bold colours or patterns.

Anything between a knee-length dress to just shorter than an evening dress is appropriate. You can also wear a jumpsuit, dressy suit or a nice blouse with dress pants or a skirt.

You’ve been invited to a wedding and the dress code says ‘smart casual’, so what can you wear? If this is the dress code then you can assume that the wedding will be relatively informal.

Keep your outfit laid-back but add a touch of elegance, it is a wedding after all! Dress smart but don’t go overly dressy.

    Men

Wear a blazer with a button-down shirt and smart suit pants or chinos. Jacket and tie are optional. Shoe wise, wear loafers, brogues or boat shoes.

Wedding dress codes can be difficult to interpret, but don’t worry, we will guide you through what to wear to a wedding with a casual dress code.

A casual dress code is appropriate for an outdoor wedding. Wear something comfortable while keeping your outfit sophisticated. While this dress code is the most laid-back option for a wedding, it is still a wedding and therefore jeans should not be considered.

Here are a few outfit options that would work for a casual wedding:

    Men

Pair a polo or button-down shirt with dress pants, chinos or khakis and boat shoes. Brown shoes are also acceptable at a casual wedding.

    Women

Wear a sundress or a pretty blouse, or perhaps a cute sweater if it’s chilly, with a skirt or dress pants. Keep embellishments to a minimum. Pair your outfit with sandals or a pair of wedges.
