Ways to up-cycle your wedding dress

Ways to up-cycle your wedding dress

For the eco-friendly bride, sustainability is of extreme importance. However, wedding dresses, in their most traditional sense, are not very sustainable. They take a lot of resources to make, and you only end up wearing it once.

An up-cycled wedding dress is a perfect solution to all your eco-issues, in this regard. You can up-cycle an old dress into a new one for yourself, you could use pre-owned/used materials to make a new wedding dress, or you could up-cycle your wedding dress into new items. This way, nothing goes to waste and tons of resources are saved.

Here are some ways you could up-cycle your wedding dress:

– Up-cycling old dresses into a new one for yourself:

Many eco-friendly brides have opted for this. They use their mothers’ wedding gowns, or purchase vintage, second-hand dresses and turn them into a new and improved dress. Some turn them into chic two-pieces, like a skirt and top, and others opt to have the dress made into a suit.

Others still go for the dying option, turning an old school dress into something modern and contemporary. Whatever you decide, all you’ll need is a few alterations.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone, I think it's fair to say we are all thinking of each and every Mum on this rather different looking Mother's Day 💐⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over on my Facebook eco-wedding wisdom series I have shared a special Mother-Daughter story today. On the right here we have my friend @dodiepeep getting ready with her Mum for her special day back in 2018. Her wedding dress started out it's life as her Mum's own wedding dress and then was beautifully upcycled and altered to give it a new lease of life. What makes it even more amazing and meaningful is that these loving alterations were completed by her Mum's own hands, incredible right?! (Plus pop over to facebook to read about the other uses this wedding dress has had, talk about versatility!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you have a family heirloom or vintage dress you're planning to upcycle for your celebrations, or meaningful accessories you plan to include? I'd love to hear your stories ❤️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo (right): @oliviamoonphoto⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ecoweddingwisdom #handmadeweddingdress #uniqueweddingdress #familyheirloom #upcycledweddingdress #upcycledwedding #recycledfashion #upcycledfashion #upcycledclothing #vintageweddingdress #vintagebridal #vintagebride #notofastfashion #weddingdressalterations #prelovedweddingdress #ecoweddingdress #sustainablewedding #sustainableweddingdress #ecoweddingtips #ecowedding #ecoweddinginspiration #ecobride #ecofriendlywedding #ecoweddingplanner #cambridgeshireweddings #bedfordshireweddings #weddingplanneruk #gettingmarried2021 #2021wedding #weddingplanningideas

– Upcycling other materials into a wedding dress:

If you have some material laying around, or some old sheets you don’t want to go to waste, why not use it to make your wedding dress? The right dressmaker is all you need.

Decide on your preferred style, keeping in mind the texture and type of material and whether it would be good for the style you want. No-fuss and nothing wasted. What more could you ask for?

Recycling no2 ♻️ I’ve always admired the hand embroidered bedsheets that the older generation of Swedish women put so much time into making. 👵🏼❤️ Now they’re just stuffed away in some dark closet. Together with som hand crocheted vintage lace I decided to make a country style romantic wedding dress. In my opinion a great way to transform our old Swedish traditions into something usable and modern. Even the buttons are from an old Swedish army jacket. 🌟💘🌸 #substainablefashion #upcycledweddingdress #cottonweddingdress #icare_2020 #husqvarnaviking_sverige #newandolddsewingmachines #swedishcountryweddingdress #countryweddingdress #swedishfolklore #oldschoolscandinavian #swedishheritage #farmerstyle #bohobride #bohowedding #bohoweddingdress #substainablefashion #bringyourgandmaslinnenandillmakeyouadress #icare_2020

– Up-cycling your wedding dress into other garments or items:

A few snips here and there, and some store-bought dye, and your wedding dress could be transformed into an everyday clothing item. If you’d prefer not to make more clothes out of it, however, you could opt for some decorative pillows, a bag, or soft toys for your (future) kids. The options are endless.

'That' wedding dress that you've all been patiently waiting to see transformed… is done 😀 These items took two painstaking days and I loved every second. I had it hanging up in the lounge for two days, just so I could create it in my head before making the first cut. The bears feet show off part of the halter neck and names of the B&G and their wedding date. I tried to create a veil using the under netting, but it was far too rigid to fold and curl the way I wanted it to, so I tried a tutu – again far too rigid. I ended up creating a little hairbow using the netting. All the beads were hand sewn on (I'm in total awe of those who actually create these things) so I had to be careful when cutting the pattern pieces and I only broke one needle in the process 😓 Blue eyes were requested, so I added a few eyelashes just to make it even more special. I have a happy customer who was over the moon. 🌙🌙 #wedding #weddingdress #weddingdressupcycle #weddingkeepsake #keepsakeanimals #keepsakebear #bear #memorybear #sewing #sentimental #sew #makersofinstagram #makersgonnamake #keepsakes #giftideas #gifts #specialclothing
