Major Jonathan Forbes 🤔 does the name ring a bell? 📸 A beautiful view from the awesome gallery @vitor.esteves 🙏🏻 His travel photos in Sri Lanka are most intriguing ❤️ . In 1831 Major Jonathan Forbes of the 78th Highlanders of the British army, while returning on horseback from a trip to Pollonnuruwa encountered the bush covered summit of Sigiriya, the fortress in the clouds 😍 . His discovery of the the ruins of Sigiriya lead to many archaeological excavations and studies. The restoration and preservation work and reports are continuously monitored by the Archaeological Dept and reported to the World Heritage Committee for maintenance of it's heritage status 🙏 . Sigiriya came to the attention of antiquarians and, later, archaeologists. Archaeological work at Sigiriya began on a small scale in the 1890s. H.C.P. Bell was the first archaeologist to conduct extensive research on Sigiriya. The Cultural Triangle Project, launched by the Government of Sri Lanka, focused its attention on Sigiriya in 1982. Archaeological work began on the entire city for the first time under this project. There was a sculpted lion's head above the legs and paws flanking the entrance, but the head collapsed years ago 😍 . Legend has it King Kashyapa constructed his palace on top of the Sigirya Rock. He also built a fortress complete with water fountains, canals, and gardens. The ruins still remain today.

Pidurangala Rock, which is opposite Sigirya Rock, provides you with the best view of the legendary rock. Climb to the top of Pidurangala Rock, watch the sun rise (or set) and take in the history that you’re surrounded by.

– Take a romantic stroll through the Royal Botanical Gardens
