Some rules are meant to be broken. While tradition states that men are meant to propose to their future brides, many modern women are taking back the power and popping the question themselves.

Here are a few stars that popped the big question to their male partners:

    Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor is no stranger to marriage. Out of her eight marriages, she popped the question once to British actor Michael Wilding.

Throughout the course of their five-year marriage, the pair had two children: Michael and Christopher. They divorced in 1957.

    Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell and partner Dax Shepard would not marry until same-sex marriage was legal in the US. In 2013, the Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage in California and Bell immediately took to Twitter to pop the question.

“.@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove,” she tweeted.

    “F*** yes!!!!!!!!!!!”, he replied excitedly.

    Judge Judy

She’s a no-nonsense judge on our TV screens, so its no surprise Judy Sheindlin, more famously known as Judge Judy, would propose to her husband.

“I did propose to him,” Sheindlin told DuJour. “I said to him, ‘Where is this relationship going?’ And he tried to weasel out of it, with his, ‘Well, you know, why do we have to get married?’ Whatever. He finally capitulated. I told him to pick a date. He picked Flag Day.”

    Britney Spears:

Spears randomly popped the question to baby daddy Kevin Federline while aboard a flight from Ireland to New York.

“I’d finished the European part of my tour and I was going home. I was ready to get back to the States. I was really happy. Kevin was with me, so I’d had a lot of fun on the tour,” she told People back in 2004. “We were a couple hours into the flight, and we’d been talking the whole time, stuff about life, wanting to have kids, the future and everything like that. It was an intimate conversation. And we’d always talked about how some people don’t have to get married when they’re in love. Then all of a sudden I said, ‘What if you want to get married?’ And I kind of went from there to asking him if he would marry me. I asked him… He said no because he thought it wasn’t the right way to do it,” she said.

Federline initially turned the proposal down, then asked Spears to marry him a few minutes later. The pair were married for 3 years before divorcing in 2007.

    Pink

Pink had an exciting proposal up her sleeve for partner Carey Hart. Back in 2005, she asked Hart for his hand in marriage while he competed in a motorcross competition. As he entered his third lap, Pink held up a board that read “Will You Marry Me?”. When Hart failed to pull over and respond, Pink added the word “Serious!” to the bottom of the board. Finally, Hart hopped off his bike and said yes.

The pair married 6 months later and have been together ever since.

    Diane von Furstenberg

Fashion designer and creator of the iconic wrap dress, Diane von Furstenberg asked now-husband American media mogul Barry Diller to marry her after turning down his many proposals.

“One year I didn’t know what to give him for his birthday, and I called him and said, ‘You know, if you want, for your birthday I’ll marry you,’ she told O Magazine. He replied with “Let me see if I can arrange it.”

    The pair married in 2001.

    Jennifer Hudson:

Jennifer Hudson was already engaged to WWE wrestler David Otunga, who proposed on her birthday, but she decided to reciprocate and ask him to marry her. Five months after their engagement, Hudson went down on one knee to propose to Otunga on his birthday. She didn’t come empty handed, her proposal featured a 5-carat engagement ring.

The pair were engaged for 10 years before splitting. They share a son together.

The couple plan to marry sometime this year. In a Youtube video, Lopez has spoken about her desire to have a big, traditional church wedding. Considering they share a blended family, the couple plan on involving their four kids in their big day. Lopez’s son Max will reportedly walk her down the aisle.

However, the couple are in no rush to tie the knot. Speaking to Oprah earlier this month, Lopez said, “It’s so funny because when we first got engaged, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to get married in a couple of months,’ ” she told Winfrey. “Like your old thinking comes right back, like all that hopeless romantic that made me get married three times.”

“I said, ‘If we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, what is the rush?’ If that’s what we’re really going to do, if we’re really going to be partners, if we’re really going to try to build something together that we both never had or never felt like we had, which is a family with a husband and a wife, and a mother and father, and we embrace all our children. We show them it’s something that we didn’t have,” she said.

After weeks of speculation, the Royal Family have officially announced that Princess Beatrice will hold her wedding reception at Buckingham Palace in May this year.

Princess Beatrice of York and her fiance Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi will say ‘I do’ on Friday, May 29 2020 at The Chapel Royal, St. James Palace.

“Her Majesty The Queen has kindly given permission for the ceremony to take place at The Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace,” reads a statement from Buckingham Palace. “The ceremony will be followed by a private reception, given by The Queen, in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.”

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi join other royals to marry in St James Chapel such as Queen Victoria to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg on 10 February 1840 and the then Duke of York and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (later King George V and Queen Mary) in 1893.

The wedding is most likely to be more low-key than other royal weddings. Both BBC and ITV have decided not to live broadcast the wedding as a result of the controversy surrounding her father, Prince Andrew.

We’re only one month into 2020, and we have yet another celebrity engagement! Model Jourdan Dunn took to Instagram to announce her engagement to rap artist and streetwear label owner Dion “Sincere” Hamilton.

The model shared a playful picture covering her eyes and letting her new bling take centre stage. She captioned the image, “Jourdan Dunn Hamilton ……. has a nice ring to it! ????”

Andrew Brown, WP Diamonds CEO, estimated the ring to be worth £22,000 (R432, 965)

“The ring on Jourdan Dunn’s engagement finger looks to be a 2ct oval with a large halo and diamond band. A nice colour clarity combination of G VS would retail for around £22,000.”

The pair began dating in 2019. Dunn is notoriously private about her relationship with Hamilton, and the only picture the couple have together covers Hamilton’s face.

Emma Stone and Dave McCary are known for being quite a private couple. However, their proposal story has made its way through the grape vine and it is enough to make you swoon!

The couple got engaged in December 2019, after being together for about two years. McCary announced the engagement on Instagram.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B5q8jCvBv7O/

Now, just about a month later, a source has told Life & Style Magazine the proposal had quite a lot of sentimental meaning behind it.

The couple met on the set of Saturday Night Live (SNL), when Stone hosted the show in 2016. McCary took the actress “back to the hallway where they first locked eyes”, reports the exclusive source.

“He had rose petals scattered all over the floor, dropped to one knee and asked Emma to marry him,” they add. “Of course, she said yes. Emma’s found her dream man, and now, she’s getting her dream wedding!”

The source seems to know something about the upcoming wedding and its arrangements. We’re sure it will be filled with sentiment, just at the proposal was.

Everyone loves a good proposal story! This might be even more true when it’s a celebrity proposal. When it comes to the stars, we just can’t get enough. Here are some of our favourite celebrity proposal stories.

    – George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu6CdPdgBx_/

On April 28, 2014, long-term bachelor George Clooney asked human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin to marry him after six months of dating. He popped the question in their home after she returned from a trip to London.

Clooney had prepared dinner, but Alamuddin suggested they not dress up or do anything fancy since she was exhausted from her travels. Clooney then put on a playlist of love songs and waited for the song “Why shouldn’t I?” to play.

He then wanted to light some candles and asked Alamuddin to find a lighter. During her search, she happened to find the ring. First, she thought it was a ring that a guest had left behind, then she realised what was really happening.

Clooney said to Ellen DeGeneres on her day-time talk show, “I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.’ And she kept looking at the ring, and she was looking at me, and she was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ ”

Apparently Clooney spent roughly 25 minutes on his knee waiting for his soon-to-be wife to respond, because she was so shocked.

    – Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B7gljXeHGvb/

Union and Wade first met in 2007. The couple went through many ups and downs and even split us briefly before their love brought them back together. In December 2013, Wade proposed with the help of his three sons.

The boys held up a sign with the words “will you marry us?” on it. There was no way she could say no!

    – David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Fna68BduL/

This one is extra special because they both proposed! When Burtka proposed, the pair were on their way to an event. He had the limousine stop on the street corner where they first met. Haris told Out Magazine that he didn’t understand why Burtka wanted to stop so badly. “I thought he wanted to get some booze or something”, he said.

Eventually, Burtka proposed and Harris said yes. Harris wore the ring for a year and on Valentine’s day he proposed to Burtka.

    – John Stamos & Caitlin McHugh

To propose to his Disney-loving girlfriend, Caitlin McHugh, Full House star John Stamos made arrangements with the production company itself.

Stamos told PEOPLE that Disney’s CEO helped him put together a movie of the most romantic moments in Disney animation. Stamos showed the film to McHugh while they were at Disneyland. The film ended with a Little Mermaid section, which prompted Stamos to “just ask the girl”.

    – Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

    https://www.instagram.com/p/9KD1yEuSwa/?utm_source=ig_embed

As we know, Kanye West loves to go big. For his proposal to Kim Kardashian, he booked a baseball stadium and had a 50-piece orchestra greet the couple as they arrived.

The words “Pleeease Marry Meee!!!” lit up the jumbotron. After she said yes, Kardashians family and friends came out of hiding to congratulate the couple.

    – Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BLJay2-At9T/

The couple met in 2012, on the set of Orange Is the New Black and in 2016, Morelli asked Wiley for her hand in marriage.

The two were meant to leave for a weekend away, and Morelli had mentioned that she wanted to leave early but she was slow to get ready, Wiley told Out Magazine.

Morelli requested that Wiley take a seat on the couch and she pulled out the ring. Wiley said, “Lauren has been married before, so I wanted her to tell me she was ready, [for] her to be the one to propose.”

“I didn’t know she was as ready as she was. I was completely shocked. I was crying uncontrollably and kept backing away from her. I asked her after, ‘Who knows about this?’ And she said, ‘Oh, everyone. Your parents know.’ We didn’t tell anyone else for a few days. That was really important to us–to have some time where it was just ours”, she added.
