    Wedding Cakes

    Category

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new trend. The wedding world is constantly evolving, and what was hot a few years ago can easily be replaced.

Whether you want to be on-trend or simply enjoy staying abreast with the latest styles, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the designs predicted to be super popular for wedding cakes in 2021.

While it may change in size, taste and appearance, cakes will always be a wedding tradition. Here are the styles expected to be big in 2021.

    Gesture cakes / skinny cakes

Gesture cakes are mini, affordable cakes that still hold the essence of tradition but won’t create a massive hole in your bank account. It’s generally the size of a normal cake one may have at a birthday party. For those having micro-weddings, this option is perfect. With the COVID-19 pandemic, couples will have to downscale their weddings so it makes perfect sense to opt for a smaller cake as well. You won’t have a ton of cake go to waste and get to save some money in the process.

    Keep it simple

Naked cakes have been all the rage for the last few years, and it seems this trend will not leave. Rustic-inspired cakes adorned with subtle floral detail and greenery will continue to be massively popular, and reflect the paired-down wedding experience of 2021.

    Art deco

While simple often reigns supreme, we also expect a massive resurgence of 1920s inspired Art Deco cakes. Think geometric shapes, bold lines and rich colours. Darker hues like black, navy and gold work best for this trend.

    Single-serve desserts:

Throw the cake out of the window and opt for individually-sized desserts. These single portions are easier to serve and reduce the need for multiple hands to touch a knife in order to cut a cake, which is perfect in these times.

A wedding is a happy, fabulous and colourful time and nothing reflects joy as well as cupcakes. You don’t have to have a wedding cake if that is not your jam.

Cupcakes are easy, more practical and might be preferable for those who would like to take them home. It also makes more sense in a COVID-19-era to offer guests individual desserts they can pick by hand instead of all sharing from one cake.

Here are some delightful cupcake-inspirations to get your mouth watering.

Marble has been having a moment for the last few years. From home design and fashion, this unique metamorphic rock has inspired an enduring trend. It has even entered the wedding world.

The best thing about marble is that it works for many different aesthetics, depending on what you pair it with. You can truly go as hard or as subtle as you want. Add bright botanicals for a garden party, or roses for a romantic look. Opt for unique geometric shapes for a more modern take or a geode texture for a more alternative feel.

Here are some magnificent marble cakes to inspire you:

Got a special island wedding planned? Or even if you can’t have the destination wedding of your dreams, you can bring the island vibes to your special day with some tropical-inspired touches.

Bring your wedding cake to life with some fun and fancy tropical extras. A tropical theme is all about bright, fun colours, from vivid greens to sharp yellow, any bold hue will work. Of course, you’ll need to incorporate flowers of some kind. If you’re hosting a destination wedding, use a popular local flower. Otherwise, palm leaves will work perfectly.

If you’re not into the botanical look, you could also use items like coconuts or pineapples to complete the feel.

What colour is more summery than yellow? Symbolic of the cheerful sun, yellow is a happy colour that signifies better days.

If you’re planning a summer wedding, we suggest injecting vibrant colour into your festivities. Yellow can be an intimidating colour but it doesn’t need to be.

Whether you want to go full out or subtle, there are many ways to incorporate this shade into your wedding day. Go bold by fully coating your cake in yellow icing, or use small touches like sunflowers or detail work to bring life to your dessert. The finish will be absolutely stunning and will make you feel like you’re eating happiness.

It’s the most spooky season of the year. Being Halloween month, October is filled with freaks and frights, making it a horror-lover’s dream.

For those that are big fans of the holiday, why not incorporate it into your wedding day? From decor to your dress and cake, anything can be given a creepy twist.

Halloween-themed wedding cakes are easy to pull off, but it depends on how far you want to go with it. You could go subtle and use classic Halloween colours like black and red, or edge it up even further with skulls, bats, webs or other weird and wonderful decor pieces.

South Africans love our sweet treats, and luckily we’ve got a host of locally-loved favourites that always feature at functions.

Modern couples are opting for a dessert table laden with a variety of dishes to tuck into instead of the singular wedding cake. This way, your guest have options that tailor to different tastes.

Those wanting a classic South African day should incorporate the iconic desserts our country has become known for. Another bonus is that all of them can be customised to be individual serving sizes, making dishing these treats up even easier.

All of these dishes have been featured in menus at top restaurants like Jonkershuis, Spek en Bone and The Blue Crane. If it’s good enough for our top chefs, it’s good enough for us!

It’s not a South African event without these treats on the dessert table:

    Malva Pudding

This dessert screams nostalgia for many South Africans. This sweet pudding had a spongy texture, and is covered in a hot, creamy sauce and served with ice-cream or custard.

    Milktart/Melktert

This milk-based custard treat is one of the most iconic South African desserts. This traditional Afrikaans treat consists of a sweet pastry crust that holds a custard filling made of milk, flour, sugar and eggs. It can be baked or left to set in the fridge, then dusted with cinnamon to finish it off.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B2bRIq_hblP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

    Peppermint Crisp Tart

For a truly indulgent dish, opt for a peppermint crisp tart. This quick and easy dessert is made by layering tennis biscuits, a mixture of whipped cream and caramel and then crumbled peppermint crisp chocolate bars. Warning, it’s dangerously delicious and sweet, so its best served with coffee to cut through the sweetness.

    Koesisters / Koeksusters

There are two types of koeksisters with completely different tastes and histories, so it’s important to know which one you’re serving up.

The koesister is a Cape Malay invention, featuring a light and fluffy dough delicately spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and dried ginger. The dough is fried in a ball shape then dunked in syrup and dusted with desiccated coconut.

A Koeksuster is the Dutch version, made by frying plaited dough and then dunking it in a sweet syrup.

Decorating a wedding cake is a form of art. Anyone can ice a cake, but only true artists can take it to the next level.

We love a stand-out wedding cake, mainly because it can work as its own feature on your big day. A cake can become art depending on the overall aesthetic and finish you choose.

Adding tons of texture and 3-dimensional detail is the easiest way to get your art on. You can also go literal with an abstract-inspired icing job, or get creative with your cake stand.

Spring is in the air. The weather is heating up, the flowers are blossoming and better days are ahead.

With weddings allowed under Level 2 lockdown, wedding planning can go full steam ahead. We love a Spring wedding because the weather is not overbearingly hot, and nature acts as the perfect backdrop.

If you’re planning a spring wedding, extend that theme into your wedding cake. This theme is all about having fun and enjoying life, there is nothing serious about it. Opt for pastel colours, and include your favourite flowers as decoration.

Wedding cakes are perfectly completed with an adorable wedding topper. Whether you go for a traditional replica of a couple or a personalised piece that speaks to you and your love, they are always sweet additions atop your dessert.

Some couples love to be different, and have opted for…unique finishes to decorate their cake. The common bride and groom sculpture is too boring for them, so they’ve updated it for an attention-grabbing picture.
